FRENCH QUARTER CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA
#CharlestonSC #LiveLifeLoveLifeBeLife
Downtown Charleston in the French Quarter is quite unique and full of history. White Point Garden, Rainbow row, and the Waterfront Park are some of the places that makes Charleston special.
Today we explore White Point Garden, also known as The Battery, is the furthest peninsula point of Charleston and faces the harbor that leads to the Atlantic. It also is the park where in 1718, Stede Bonnet and 49 other Pirates were hanged for their crimes. It was also a warning to others of what would happen if they continued the practice of piracy. This did not deter Blackbeard from blockading and plundering Charleston later on.
The iconic Rainbow Row was the second stop as I learned about how these houses were once merchant homes that ran their shops on the first floor whole living on the second and third floors. A large fire consumed the neighborhood except for these building in 1778. After the civil war, the area fell into disrepair and became the slums of the city.
In the 1920's, Susan Pringle Frost founded the Society For the Preservation of Old Dwellings and bought 6 of these homes, but didn't have the funds to restore them. Later in 1931, Dorothy Haskell Porcher Legge bought 3 more homes and began renovation. She was the one who painted the houses pink in the Charleston Caribbean Roots and other home owners followed by painting their homes in pastel colors. There are few rumors to why they are painted the way they are.
After visiting Rainbow Row, I took a stroll down to Carmella's Dessert Cafe to take part in a cannoli. This was to celebrate 500 Subscribers and thank them for supporting me so far! Without al of you I wouldn't be were I am today! THANK YOU!
Before heading back I took a walk through the Waterfront Park which was built in 1990 as a green space for Charleston. It has a 2 water fountains an encourages all who dare to splash in the water for a little bit of fun. The main one is by the entrance and the second one is in the shape of a pineapple that signifies Hospitality. A short pier is also located here which has a water taxi that can transport you across the harbor. While there, I had the pleasure of witnessing 2 pelicans fishing out in the waters. The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge can also be seen and it connects to Mount Pleasant and the northern Islands.

Beaufort Bridge - Morehead City, North Carolina
Built in 1957, here is the Beaufort Bascule Bridge near Morehead City. I erroneously state that it is the only bascule in North Carolina, but it is one of very few. The placement of this bridge is interesting in that there is a high-level fixed bridge (built around the same time) on the same road a mile to the south.

HISTORIC FRAMPTON HOUSE ~ Defend the Charleston & Savannah Railroad
Video capture of the historic Frampton House, Frampton Lines, and site of the Hill Plantation owned by John Edward Frampton. The Lines are greater than 100 yards in length. One can see them south, west and northwest of the Frampton House. The battery was built in 1861- 62 via South Carolina & Georgia Confederate troops to defend the Charleston & Savannah Railroad which was a route through the Lowcountry. Houses located here and at Frampton's other plantations were burned by Federal troops in early 1865. John Edward Frampton was a cotton grower, senator, and delegate to the Secession Convention. Note: This area had a true historic feel to it as if one were back in time especially with the old oak trees with spanish moss flowing from their limbs, the southern home contstructed in the 1800's, and the Frampton Lines constructed to defend the Charleston and Savannah Railroad. There was a steady flow of visitors to this site. It is good to see people are still interested in historic landmarks. Unfortunately, civil war landmarks are slowly being removed. Thanks for watching :) Video filmed by YouTuber ln4359

STERN LAUNCHING of DD445 FLETCHER CLASS DESTROYER CHARLESTON NAVY YARD SHIP CHRISTENING 64954
This 1943 U.S. Navy training film shows all the steps involved in the stern launching of a completed ship at a shipyard. In this case the ship being shown is a U.S. Navy Fletcher class or DD445 class destroyer. Several ships of this class are shown including USS Paul Hamilton DD-590. Also shown is sister ship USS Twiggs DD-591, DD-665 USS Bryant and DD-649 USS Albert W. Grant. All of the film seems to take place at the Charleston Navy Yard.
Tragically, USS Twiggs shown in the film was sunk on 16 June 1945 by a kamikaze aircraft near Okinawa. 188 crew were rescued out of 329 officers and men.
The film shows how riggers remove keel blocks and cover blocks, and make other preparations prior to stern launching of the ship. Once the launching and christening are complete, the ship will be moved to drydock for installation of weapons / guns and propellers as well as other fittings. The Carleston Naval Shipyard (formerly known as the Charleston Navy Yard) shown was a U.S. Navy ship building and repair facility located along the west bank of the Cooper River, in North Charleston, South Carolina and part of Naval Base Charleston. The yard first produced the destroyer USS Tillman (DD-135), then began to increase production in the 1930s. A total of 21 destroyers were assembled at the naval facility.
The Fletcher class was a class of destroyers built by the United States during World War II. The class was designed in 1939, as a result of dissatisfaction with the earlier destroyer leader types of the Porter and Somers classes. Some went on to serve during the Korean War and into the Vietnam War.
The United States Navy commissioned 175 Fletcher-class destroyers between 1942 and 1944, more than any other destroyer class, and the design was generally regarded as highly successful. Fletchers had a design speed of 38 knots and an armament of five 5 guns in single mounts with 10 21 torpedoes in two quintuple centerline mounts. The Allen M. Sumner and Gearing classes were Fletcher derivatives.
The long-range Fletcher-class ships performed every task asked of a destroyer, from anti-submarine warfare and anti-aircraft warfare to surface action. They could cover the vast distances required by fleet actions in the Pacific. In fact, they served almost exclusively in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, during which they accounted for 29 Imperial Japanese Navy submarines sunk. In a massive effort, the Fletchers were built by shipyards across the United States and, after World War II ended, 11 were sold to countries that they had been built to fight against: Italy, Germany, and Japan, as well as other countries, where they had even longer, distinguished careers. Three have been preserved as museum ships in the U.S. and one in Greece.

Episode 2: Myrtle Beach City, South Carolina | Keanu Mendoza
Destination: Myrtle Beach City in South Carolina.
We first went to Broadway at the Beach where we ate our lunch at Joe's Crab Shack. And just a 7 minutes (or less) car ride, we went to Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and stayed for a while. Since the wind was too cold and we are not Elsa, we were bothered by how cold it was so we just went for a walk around Ocean Avenue.
