University of Connecticut - 5 Things I Wish I Had Known About Before Attending
- It feels just like yesterday that I was an undergrad, and now that I’ve looked at my calendar, I still can’t believe that it’s2015. Needless to say, the ‘college life’ is something I will never forget. Rewind back to 2001. It’s senior year in high school, and I have no idea where I’m going to go to school. I hadn’t spent too much time researching schools, and after only applying to three places, I finally decided on the University of Connecticut, better known to most as UConn. Interestingly enough, I didn’t know much about UConn, except for three things that I had ‘heard’ — UConn was well-known for graduating quite a few smart cookies, it was famous for basketball, and wasalso known as a ‘party school’. To be honest, the main reason whyI had leaned towards UConn was because they had offered me a partial scholarship (hey, you can’t beat free money, right?). I know you can’t find out everything about a school until you actually attend, but there are a few things I wish I knew about UConn before I chose to attend. I attended Storrs, UConn’s main campus, and lived there all four years. To me, when I first arrived, I felt like I had landed smack in the middle of nowhere. I had been told that there were cows on campus, as well as a dairy bar, and that the nearest Wal-Mart was a good 15-minute drive away.

UConn is one of the first universities in the United States to adopt the most technologically advanced way of managing and studying a dairy herd. The new milking robots will be around day and night to milk the cows, providing the dairy bar with quality milk for ice cream, and caretakers and researchers will have more time for research.

Back to the Times: UConn Hartford Holiday Caroling | UConn
UConn Hartford hosted holiday carolers on December 19, 2017. The event was organized by iQuilt, a local initiative to encourage downtown visitation. The holiday sing revives a tradition of caroling on the steps of the Hartford Times building dating back to the 1960's and 1970's.

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is a public land grant, National Sea Grant and National Space Grant research university in Storrs, Connecticut, United States. It was founded in 1881.
The primary 4,400-acre (17.8 km2) campus is in Storrs, Connecticut, approximately a half hour's drive from Hartford and 90 minutes from Boston. It is a flagship university that is ranked the best public national university in New England and is tied for 24th in top public schools and tied for 64th best national university in the 2020 U.S. News & World Report rankings. UConn has been ranked by Money Magazine and Princeton Review top 18th in value. The university is designated R-1: Doctoral Universities – Highest Research Activity with the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education classifying the student body as More Selective, its most selective admissions category. The university has been recognized as a Public Ivy, defined as a select group of publicly funded universities considered to provide a quality of education comparable to those of the Ivy League.UConn is one of the founding institutions of the Hartford, Connecticut/Springfield, Massachusetts regional economic and cultural partnership alliance known as New England's Knowledge Corridor. UConn was the second U.S. university invited into Universitas 21, an elite international network of 24 research-intensive universities, who work together to foster global citizenship. UConn is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. UConn was founded in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School, named after two brothers who donated the land for the school. In 1893, the school became a land grant college. In 1939, the name was changed to the University of Connecticut. Over the next decade, social work, nursing and graduate programs were established, while the schools of law and pharmacy were also absorbed into the university. During the 1960s, UConn Health was established for new medical and dental schools. John Dempsey Hospital opened in Farmington in 1975.
Competing in the American Athletic Conference as the Huskies, UConn has been particularly successful in their men's and women's basketball programs. The Huskies have won 21 NCAA championships. The UConn Huskies are the most successful women's basketball program in the nation, having won a record 11 NCAA Division I National Championships (tied with the UCLA Bruins men's basketball team) and a women's record four in a row (2013–2016), plus over 40 conference regular season and tournament championships. UConn also owns the two longest winning streaks of any gender in college basketball history.

Phi Sigma Pi HuskyTHON 2019
HuskyTHON is an organization run by students at UConn. Students at UConn spend the year raising funds for the Connecticut Children's Medical Center and culminates into an 18 hour dance marathon held in February where some of the children treated in the hospital and their families come and tell us their stories. All of the proceeds raised during the year are sent to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center, the only hospital in Connecticut dedicated to solely child care. Here is a video we made explaining what HuskyTHON means to us and why we dance for this amazing organization.
Off Campus Bookstore to Become New Bar and Grill
The increasing availability of alternative textbook outlets to students is taking a toll on traditional textbook stores like the Rams Bookstore on the corner of Mason and Laurel. With more students choosing to rent their textbooks, obtain an electronic version, or purchase online for cheaper, store owner Griff Kull says that they're not seeing as much textbook business. In order to try and bring in more foot traffic, Kull has decided to bring in a new business that will transform the sore into a Colorado State-themed sports bar and grill named The Boot.
Kull feels that a bar and grill will better take advantage of the store's large space and take advantage of its convenient location. THe store will continue to sell Colorado State merchandise and textbooks but things will just get moved around a little bit after the change. The store's split level layout will allow both bar and bookstore to coexist with ease. Sharing an entrance, the upper level will be turned into the restaurant that will include the bar and a stage for live music while the lower level and basement will hold the CSU apparel and other merchandise. A back room will be the location of all textbook operations.
Renovation will hopefully begin in mid April and Kull says the made-over store should be ready to open in the middle of the summer and be ready for students to return for the new semester.
