Ukrainian Art: Kazimir Malevich (1879, Kyiv)
Kazymyr Malevych (more known as Kazimir Malevich) was a Modern Ukrainian visual artist who was born in 1879. Kazimir Malevich has had numerous gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Stedelijk Museum and at the Rijksmuseum. Numerous works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'Suprematist Composition' sold at Sotheby's New York in 2008 for $60002500. The artist died in 1935.
As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Malevich's birth in Ukraine, it is timely that we also take a closer look at the history of Ukrainian modern art and what it had to offer its own native son. By considering Malevich's art in line with the activities of contemporary Ukrainian painters, we are able to add yet another layer of understanding to the creative processes of this complex figure of modern art.

PAINTINGS BY ROMAN VOVK- exhibit in UKRAINIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM
Roman Vovk is an artist whose work reflects man's unity with nature. This is evident in the defining characteristics of his paintings. The definitive brushstrokes with dynamic colors underscore the essential and eternal, mundane and festive, the perceived and the invisible. The artist's vision, deep-rooted in his innate memory, comes to fruition with themes of Cossack liberty, iconic folklore and the vistas and landscapes of his beloved Ukraine. Some paintings echo the historical and spiritual portrait of Ukraine featuring its civic and religious leaders. Other exhibited works delve deeply into the symbolism of identity: symbolic still life and the breathtaking Carpathian landscape. Vovk's paintings are sought after not only because of his exceptional technique but because they visualize the spiritual needs of authenticity. Collectors of his work include connoisseurs of fine art.
Current Exhibit by Roman Vovk continues through June 26, 2011

Welcome to Kiev, Ukraine: Desyatinnaya Church & Ukrainian History Museum, Kiev, Ukraine
Entomologist, beekeeper, biologist, scientist Dr Viktor Fursov is talking about Desyatinnaya Church (=The Church of the Tithes or Church of the Dormition of the Virgin ), which is located near National Museum of History of Ukraine, and close to Andreevsky Descent in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.
The Church of the Tithes or Church of the Dormition of the Virgin (Ukrainian: Десятинна Церква, Desiatynna Tserkva; Russian: Десятинная Церковь, Desyatinnaya Tserkov') was the first stone church in Kiev. Originally it was built by the order of Grand PrinceVladimir (Volodymyr) the Great between 989 and 996.
Christianity was accepted by Kievan Rus' Princess Olga, the ruler of Kiev, who was baptized, taking the Christian name Helen, in 955 (or 957). Her grandson, Grand Prince Volodymyr Svyatoslavovich or Volodymyr the Great (960-1015) was a Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev, and ruler of Kievan Rus' State from 980 to 1015.
Grand Prince Volodymyr is known as Russian ruler who christened (baptized) Russian people in the state Kievan Rus'.
The legend says that until the age of 28 he was a great raver and a pagan, who persecuted Christians, murdered his brother Yaropolk and seduced his wife. But early Slavic chronicle, called Tale of Bygone Years, says that Prince Volodymyr chose Christianity, or Byzantine Christian Orthodoxy, between Judaism, Islamism and Roman Catholicism, and he was christened and advanced Russian Orthodox Church within the state named Kievan Rus'. He had got more than 13 children.
Prince Vladimir was baptized at Chersonesos in 988, taking the Christian name of Basil. Returning to Kiev, he desroyed pagan monuments and established many churches, starting with a church dedicated to St. Basil, and the Church of the Tithes (989).
Prince Volodymyr and Princess Olga were venerated as the Equal-to-apostles Saints by the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Later on, the gallery expanded as the parts of the Władysław Łożyński (1914) and Bolesław Orzechowicz (1929) collections were incorporated. In early 2005 the collection of European art from the 14th to the 18th centuries was transferred to the new premises - the renovated palace-residence of Count Potocki, the former governor of Austrian Galicia. A masterpiece of Georges de La Tour, the 17th-century French artist is presented here on permanent display.
In 1940, after the city of Lviv/Lwów had been occupied by the Soviet Union, Soviet government ordered nationalization of private property. As a result, works from the Lubomirski family museum, the Baworowscy Library, and some other private collections came into the possession of the gallery. All these works had until the 1939 Invasion of Poland belonged either to the Polish state, or to Polish private collectors, as well as Roman - Catholic church.
Dutch and Flemish Art Collection:
There are over 150 paintings representing Netherlandish, Flemish and Dutch art in the gallery’s collections. The jewels of the collection are two still lifes by Jan van Kessel. Also on display are paintings by representatives of Brueghel School, for example, a painting by Joseph van Bredael who worked in the style of his famed predecessor at the beginning of 18th century. Pieter Neefs I, who often worked together with Frans Franken II, a master of small figure compositions, represents the church interior genre. Further on view is a pair of portraits by Gerrit van Honthorst – Man with viola da gamba and Woman with a guitar (1631).
The collection of the Lviv Art Gallery includes such works as a Saint Jerome by Lucas Gassel (1539), Portrait of a woman by Pieter Pietersz (1557), a group of paintings Venice, Bellona and Mary Magdalene by Jakob de Backer, and two landscapes by Abraham Cowarts.
