Western Ukrainian Village - Last Place to Celebrate 'Real' Malanka
One of a kind. Ukrainians living in the village of Krasnoilsk, neighboring Romania, celebrated Red Malanka over the weekend, to welcome in the Old New Year.
Villagers dressed up in traditional costumes, and walked in circles around local houses, a tradition that has lasted over 400 years.

Chernivtsi is a city in western Ukraine, situated on the upper course of the River Prut
Chernivtsi National University (full name Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Ukrainian: Чернівецький національний університет імені Юрія Федьковича) is a public university in the City of Chernivtsi in Western Ukraine. One of the leading Ukrainian institutions for higher education, it was founded in 1875 as the Franz-Josephs-Universität Czernowitz when Chernivtsi (Czernowitz) was the capital of the Duchy of Bukovina, a Cisleithanian crown land of Austria-Hungary. Today the university is based at the Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans building complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

Chernivtsi: Little Vienna in Western Ukraine
Chernivtsi is a city in Western Ukraine with a large architectural and cultural heritage from the times of the Habsburg Empire. Back then known by its German name Czernowitz, the city began to flourish in the late 18th century. The German language became the lingua franca due to the influence of the Habsburgs and the large Jewish population. Chernivtsi was the capital of Bukovina - a region covering parts of present southwestern Ukraine and northeastern Romania. Literary figures including the late 19th-century novelist, travel writer and journalist Karl Emil Franzos published their works about the city and the region in German.
The architectural heritage of the city is very well preserved. Most of the buildings in the city center originate from the late 19th and early 20th century, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire built beautiful houses that resembled the architectural styles of contemporary buildings in Vienna - mainly Art Nouveau style.
Chernivtsi also became a center of both Romanian and Ukrainian national movements. It became part of Romania after 1918. The large mainly German and Yiddish-speaking Jewish population of the city perished during W W II. From 1945 to 1991, Chernivtsi was part of the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union. During that time, the architectural heritage suffered greatly from decay and neglect. In 1991, Chernivtsi became part of present Ukraine.
In recent years, many of the once dilapidated buildings in the city center have been restored. Today, Chernivtsi is a colorful city with a rich architectural and cultural heritage.

Bird’s eye view of Cherkasy – city on big water
Our project Ukraine: a bird’s eye view has the new city to show you. Cherkasy is another beautiful city on the Dnieper River with an extremely rich history. People inhabited these lands since prehistoric times. The settlement decayed several times, but it was built up again and again.
Today Cherkasy is one of the biggest Ukrainian cities with eclectic strews of sights.
The Wedding Palace or the House of Scherbyna is one of the most luxurious 10-century mansions preserved undestroyed until now. The owner was a rich landowner who made a fortune building the South-Western railroad.
One can see another fabulous palace, today is a hotel, sets a fairy-tale mood even when the days are grey – it’s not only its blue color but also the form of its towers, arches, balconies, and spires.
From bird’s eye view see also the Bridge of Love – it’s over 50 years old, the tree of love, unique lakes in the Park Sosnoby Bir, a Buddhist White Lotus Temple, and the biggest dike in Ukraine – 11 thousand cars use it daily to drive 13 kilometers from the right bank of the Dnieper to the left.

A Baba Feeds the Fowl in Western Ukraine
This is footage that was shot in the town of Pidhajtsi (pop approx. 4,000), state of Ternopil, in western Ukraine in September, 2005. The people of the small towns and villages in this region--the Pidhajetskyj rajon (county of Pidhajtsi), which is among the poorest regions in Ukraine--survive as subsistence farmers with some degree of waged labor. The official unemployment figure for the county, according to pre-Orange Revolution stats, is 10-15%; a number of county officials told me that the actual figure is between 35-45%. Average wages/pensions are about $60/month. Nearly every household in the town of Pidhajtsi (Ukrainian counties are named for their seat of government) has three generations present whose members usually survive on $2/day or less ($2/day being the true poverty line for people of the northern hemisphere, due to heating cost). The people of this region in general can not survive without raising and growing their own food. The documentary “Flucht und Heimat“ shows moments of escape and integration and compares the reasons for fleeing. Different contemporaries report about their experience of leaving their home in Ukraine.
The first part of the documentary is about the generation of resettlers in World War II. These people were forced to leave their homes in the ukrainian region Bukovina because of a pact between Hitler and Stalin. Most of them had to leave their belongings behind and move to Germany to start a new life.
Today there are a still different people getting hit by such a stroke of fate. Examples for this are the refugees of the current war in Ukraine. They had to leave their houses in eastern Ukraine or on Crimea and move to West Ukraine. Some of them found a new home in the city of Czernowitz.
