Re-discovered Heritage Temples of Varanasi
Shri Kashi Vishwanath Pathway project has taken a new turn due to the heritage temple structures and idols being found during the recent demolitions. Some of these awe-inspiring ancient temples are believed to be more than 400 years old and were confined from the public view due to the unauthorised construction around them.
The pathway project was envisaged to ease the access for the devotees but has now been converted into and extension and a conservation project for these heritage monuments. There are various rumours which are being spread suggesting that the demolitions are destroying homes, idols and temples which is indeed the opposite of the conservation efforts being carried out successfully.

Varanasi India (warning: graphic)
My second video from Varanasi, India. WARNING: graphic content. Towards the end there is a human corpse floating in the Ganges- only meters from swimming children. If you think you will be offended, don't watch. This place is one of the holiest in the world for Hindus. Here is where people come to die. To be burned. And have their ashes poured into the Ganges. Children, pregnant women, hermaphrodites, and snake bite victims can not be burned as per tradition. These bodies are weighted with a stone and sunk to the river bottom. This has been happening for thousands of years. This is a sacred place to swim in the river, and is believed to give good luck and blessings to bathers. I opted out on that.

Varanasi - Spiritual capital of India
Pilgrims gathered on the banks of Ganga in Varanasi - Uttar Pradesh. River terns fly around the boats that ply the ghats while the middle class crowds of India mill on the river's banks. There is something ancient and timeless about this set of moving images...
Varanasi is an Indian city on the banks of the Ganges (Ganga) in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) southeast of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva as it has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city at older times was known as Kashi or Shiv ki Nagri.
Many of its temples were plundered and destroyed by Mohammad Ghauri in the 12th century. The temples and religious institutions in the city now are dated to the 18th century.
The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations. The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the Ganges. The city has been a cultural center of North India for several thousand years, and has a history that is older than most of the major world religions. The Benares Gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed in Varanasi, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in Varanasi. Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath located near Varanasi.
Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. Scholarly books have been written in the city, including the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas. Today there is a temple of his namesake in the city, the Tulsi Manas Mandir. One of the largest residential universities of Asia the Banaras Hindu University is located here. Varanasi is often referred to as the city of temples, the holy city of India, the religious capital of India, the city of shiva, and the city of learning.

The World's Oldest Living City - Varanasi
The land of Varanasi has been the best pilgrimage site for Hindus for centuries. Often referred to as Benares, Varanasi is the oldest living city in the world. These few words of Mark Twain say it all: Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older than legend, and seems twice as old as all together. Hindus believe that those who have the honor of dying in the land of Varanasi would obtain salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and rebirth. Residence of Lord Shiva and Parvati, the origins of Varanasi are still unknown. It is believed that Ganga in Varanasi has the power to wash the sins of mortals.
