Arriving at SFO, I Wander International Terminal G, Unable to Get on the UA 747 to ICN
Continuing my United Airlines Boeing 747 Global Farewell Trip, I disembark BART at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Make my way into International Terminal G. I’m able to walk right into the terminal after the BART turnstile without having to ride the AirTrain. It’s a short walk to the security checkpoint.
I’ve cleared security and am in International Terminal G. Now I need to locate the gate for UA Flight 888 to Beijing, China, (PEK) so I can get checked in for my backup flight (it looks bad for me to get a seat on UA893, a Boeing 747-400 to Seoul Incheon (ICN)). I locate the PEK flight at Gate G93 and get checked in for UA888. The agent tells me there might be a delay as the Boeing 777-200 hasn’t been towed to the gate yet from the maintenance hangar (it came in from Washington Dulles (IAD) last night).
I proceed to Gate G100 for the 747 flight to ICN. This is the penultimate United Boeing 747 heading for South Korea. It’s tail number N118UA, the same airplane I was on Oct. 19 for the Washington Dulles (IAD) special Boeing 747farewell flight.
I just learned that United’s old Global First Lounge at SFO International Terminal G is temporarily serving as the Polaris First Class and Polaris Business Class international departures lounge. United is remodeling what used to be the United Club at the end of Terminal G into the Polaris Lounge. Once that’s done in Summer 2018 (!), this lounge will be transformed into a United Club.
It’s disappointing I can’t get a seat on the Boeing 747 to ICN. It looked good just 24 hours ago, but many last-minute bookings and standby listings mean I ended up 13 short of getting a seat.
I want to check out the Singapore Airlines Airbus A350 (Singapore Flight 31 to SIN). You can’t see much of the A350 from the gate area at the end of Terminal G, so I head back up the escalator. I’m able to get a decent view of the Singapore A350, which is next to an Air India Boeing 777 going to Bangalore.
Now I’m back to the Beijing gate, hoping my upgrade will clear.

LA coliving: PodShare's permeable intersection between social/privacy
Calling it “a social network with an address”, Los Angeles entrepreneur Elvina Beck created PodShare, a coliving experiment where dozens of “Podestrians”- travelers, mobile workers or new arrivals to the city- share a communal space filled with sleeping pods or “bunk beds for adults”.
Beck, who built the first PodShare in 2012 with her father, wanted to respond to her demographic’s rejection of widespread home ownership and embrace of the sharing economy. She set out to transform the American bunk bed, creating a more open (and co-ed) version of the Japanese capsule hotels.
For $40 to $50 per night (or discounted weekly and monthly prices), Podestrians can choose a bottom or top sleeping pod (equipped with a lamp and a small flatscreen television with Internet access) along with all the shared spaces, including a kitchen (with communal food, and space for individual storage in the pantry and fridge), bathroom, showers (toiletries included) and a communal lounge.
Currently, there are 3 locations in Los Angeles, but Beck sees the model as scalable across the country and, similar to a gym, members could have overnight access at any location.
PodShare doesn’t own any of the locations, but instead rents empty space from landlords. They stay away from residentially-zoned properties and instead focus on converting commercial or live/work spaces. Beck and her partner Kera Package have evolved the pods so they are now modular and totally mobile so they can go up and down at any location when a lease ends.
In reflection of the sharing economy’s privilege of “access” over “ownership”, Beck tries to outfit each location with extras like bicycles and instruments. She hopes each location will eventually have bigger extras, like a gym or pool. Currently, the Hollywood location even has a recording studio and editing bay.
