St. Petersburg, Russia
Recorded August 4-5, 2011
While sailing the Baltic Sea on the Emerald Princess I took a 2-day deluxe shore excursion in St. Petersburg, Russia. My tour included Peter and Paul Fortress, Petergof, Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood, St. Isaac Cathedral, and the Hermitage Museum. The highlight of our visit was the Imperial Reception at Catherine Palace. We also took a scenic boat cruise on the rivers and canals of the city.

The music of Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky highlight a tour of St. Petersburg, Russia. Included: Russian poet Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837); Catherine the Great (1729-96); and Grigori Rasputin (1869-1916), the mystic who held sway over Tsar Nicholas II and his family.
In the series finale we return to St Petersburg to meet review some significant figures in its history: Pushkin, Catherine the Great, and Rasputin. Our last tour to a Classical Destination features the music of the composers Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky.
Espoo United-SKA St. Petersburg 1-8 Espoo Metro Areena 12.08.2016 Highlights
My trip to the second official game of Espoo United against SKA St. Petersburg of KHL (Continental Hockey League). The game featured the historical first ever goal of Espoo United scored by Olli Iisakka. The crowd was 1261. The ticket price was 5 euros. For some reason, SKA played without their superstars Mikko Koskinen, Pavel Datsyuk, Ilya Kovalchuk, and Slava Voynov.

HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS ST. PETERSBURG - SADOVAYA 4*, RUSSIA
Hotel review
THE RUSSIA YOU NEVER SEE | Ulan-Ude, Russia
Ulan-Ude, Russia - From Stolby National Park in Krasnoyarsk, we continue east on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Ulan-Ude. The Capital of Buryatia, Ulan-Ude is our jump-off point for exploring the Buryatia region.
We start with a visit to Ivolginsky Datsan - a significant Russian Buddhist Temple, as well as a visit to lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov, one of Ivolginsky Datsan sacred Buddhists objects of Russia.
After a blessing from a Buddhist Lama outside Ulan-Ude, we make a 3-hour journey deep in the great Russian Steppe of Southern Siberia.
The small Russian family farm community on the border of Mongolia in Buryatia was a highlight of the Trans-Siberian Railway adventure across Russia. We rode horses, wrestled, learned about the Buryatia culture and customs, and ate a feast! It was a true Russia travel experience!
I walk away from this feeling incredibly humbled to be invited into this parallel universe - far removed from anything I knew or have seen in Russia so far.
If you ever have the opportunity to travel Russia, and experience the Trans-Siberian Railway, I highly recommend it! See you next week from Lake Baikal!

(Ep. 13) GYMNASIUM - Venue in St. Petersburg: Tsar Events' RUSSIA SURVIVAL GUIDE
Tsar Events' RUSSIA SURVIVAL GUIDE with Maya Krivchenia: Russian venues. St. Petersburg - GYMNASIUM #RussiaSurvivalGuide
The restaurant ‘Gymnasium’ is located in the historical heart of the city, within several minutes walk of St. Isaac Cathedral. The restaurant has been settled in the house of the former girl’s gymnasium in Konnogvardeisky boulevard. It has been established recently, but the restaurant has been highly appraised by Petersburg citizens and city guests.
Spacious restaurant halls house 400 visitors. The main hall is decorated in classical style resembling palace interiors: elegant columns along the hall, cozy elite furniture made according to historical patterns, fine lamps decorate the walls. In such luxury even everyday life with its bustle and problems gets the shade of aristocratism.
The bar hall interior is modern. The color scale is elegant black. Massive red chandeliers brighten up this dark space with soft illumination. So the atmosphere of aristocratic exquisiteness is created in the hall. Cozy leather sofas, plasma panels promote to the comfortable rest. VIP cabins suit ideally to have a private talk or meeting.
When the weather is fine it is a great pleasure to have a rest at summer veranda located in the restaurant yard. Pleasant gentle breeze and low leaves rustle are going to awoke inimitable sensation of calmness and solitude.
The restaurant cuisine is international; there is a wide choice of the best dishes from Russia, Asia, East and Europe. The rich wine list deserves special guests’ attention. Every night the atmosphere of the brightest holiday reigns in the restaurant: captivating laser show, live music is going to raise your spirits. As soon as you hear your favorite tunes you can’t help singing or dancing.
Restaurant ‘Gymnasium’ is the perfect place to have a nice rest, to admire fine interiors, to enjoy tasty dishes and pleasant music.
Main hall – 150 seats maximum, summer terrace – 50 seats maximum.

Finding a Way: The Soft Diplomacy of Art Exchanges Between Russia and the United States
This program explores the politics of international cultural exchange since the 2011 moratorium on loans of art objects between Russian, government-owned museums and institutions in the United States. The program begins with a conversation between art museum directors Mikhail Piotrovski of the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg, and Glenn Lowry of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, followed by a discussion between Ambassador Mikhail Shvydkoy, Special Commitments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Russian Federation, and Nicholas Berliner, Director of the Office of Russian Affairs, U.S. State Department. Daniel T. Orlovsky, Professor and George Bouhe Research Fellow in Russian Studies, Dedman College of Humanities & Sciences, SMU, moderates both conversations.
This program was organized by the John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies at SMU, in collaboration with the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and the Meadows Museum.
