Deep gratitude to our host in Alaska, graduate student, and future governor of Alaska, Cachet Garrett, who brought us to Alaska on her dime, not the university's.
There is no sound engineer, no sound board, no crew other than Pauline who does all the video and audio recording work for free, and alone with her equipment. If you don't like the sound or video or editing, you can come volunteer to help make it better.

Alaska: Chena Hot Springs
Chena Hot Springs is a hot spring, resort, and unincorporated community in the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, 56.5 miles northeast of Fairbanks near the Chena River State Recreation Area. The resort makes use of the first low-temperature binary geothermal power plant built in Alaska, and is working on several alternative energy projects, including production and use of hydrogen and vegetable oil for fuel. The resort is conducting collaborative experiments in greenhouse production of vegetables with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station.
Chena Hot Springs was founded over 100 years ago by two gold mining brothers, Robert and Thomas Swan. In 1905, Robert Swan was suffering from rheumatism and needed a place to calm his pain and be comfortable. The two brothers set out to find the hot springs. It took them a little over a month to reach the hot springs after searching for it in Interior Alaska’s harsh landscape. In 1911, twelve small cabins were built to accommodate visitors. The twelve cabins developed, and they became one of the most famous resorts in the interior of Alaska. Chena Hot Springs became so famous that the United States Department of Agriculture sent chemists to analyze the water. The characteristics of the water are very different from other American hot springs.
The coordinates for Chena Hot Springs Alaska are 65'03 N and 146'03 W (65.05, -146.05). The average yearly temperature for the area is −4.9 °C (23.2 °F), with the highest temperature being in July at 20.4 °C (68.7 °F) and the lowest temperature being in January at −31.2 °C (−24.2 °F). Annually the average amount of precipitation is 357 millimetres (14.1 in). The average snowfall amount in Chena Hot Springs is 161.8 centimetres (63.7 in) annually.
Chena Hot Springs has visibility of the Aurora borealis, especially around the March equinox.
Chena Hot Springs Resort uses two 200kW Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) geothermal energy power plants to generate energy, the first in Alaska. The resort moved the diesel generators used in the past to a backup role since July 2006, and it is successful in reducing the cost from 30 cents/kWh to 5 cents/kWh. The resort owners have future plans in increasing the work output of the powerplant from 200 kW to 1MW. An increase to 730 kilowatts was accomplished.

UAF - 2010 - Move-in Day
Move-in Day is a hectic and exciting day at UAF. This year, we decided to capture the chaos in a time-lapse video shot throughout the morning and afternoon of Aug. 29, 2010.
Video produced by Megan Otts, UAF Marketing and Communications. Photos by Megan Otts, Todd Paris and Maureen McCombs.

Fairbanks, Alaska in the winter is freaking amazing and should be on every travelers bucket list.
We spent a week up there in March: enjoying the snow, chasing the northern lights, dog sledding, going to sled dog races, sipping cocktails with glasses made of ice in the ice museum, visiting the sculpture festival, and SO MUCH MORE.
Check out Fairbanks, Alaska... In the winter! It's one of the most incredible places I've ever been.

Kinross & University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF)
Kinross Gold Corporation is providing approximately US$1 million in funding for a three year endowment that will provide advanced training to mining engineering students at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF).
Since 1917, the UAF has educated mining engineers who have graduated into career opportunities in Alaska, the United States, and around the world. Students and faculty members at the UAF regularly collaborate with Kinross' Fort Knox mine on research projects, and Fort Knox employees regularly volunteer as members of UAF advisory boards.
Springtime at University of Alaska Fairbanks, 1970s
Students at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, circa 1970s, welcome spring. Scenes include students on the roof above the entrance of one of the lower campus residence halls, rapidly melting snow pouring across sidewalks and parking lots, students tossing a football and checking their bicycles in front of Nerland Hall, and students outside the Moore-Bartlett-Skarland Complex. Alaska Aviation History (1978)
Excerpt from Alaska Review 11. In this segment, Alaska Review reports on early Alaska aviation, with photos and film clips of Alaska pioneer aviators and their aircraft. The report leads into a discussion of current air routes and the controversies surrounding air service to bush communities in Alaska. (Sound/Color/2-inch quad videotape).
Airing from 1976 to 1987, Alaska Review was the first statewide public affairs television program in Alaska. The show was designed to explore public policy issues confronting Alaska, and to assist citizens in making decisions about the future of their land. Produced by Independent Public Television, Inc., (IPTV), the series eventually consisted of 16 one-hour shows, 46 half-hour shows, and one three-hour special broadcast. Funded through the Alaska Humanities Forum and State of Alaska, the series won multiple awards for public service and educational programming. IPTV dissolved in 1988. Videotapes for all finished productions and raw footage were later moved to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), where they became housed with the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives department in the Rasmuson Library at UAF, shortly after the unit was founded in 1993. The Alaska Film Archives is currently seeking funding to preserve and digitize all of the original full interviews gathered in the making of the Alaska Review series. Copies of finished productions are also held by Alaska State Library Historical Collections in Juneau. For more information, please contact the Alaska Film Archives at University of Alaska Fairbanks.
This sequence contains excerpts from AAF-4956 from the Alaska Review collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E.
