Deep gratitude to our host in Alaska, graduate student, and future governor of Alaska, Cachet Garrett, who brought us to Alaska on her dime, not the university's.
There is no sound engineer, no sound board, no crew other than Pauline who does all the video and audio recording work for free, and alone with her equipment. If you don't like the sound or video or editing, you can come volunteer to help make it better.

The museum's hands-on energy exhibit opened May 28, 2011 in the special exhibits gallery. This innovative examination of energy needs and sources in Alaska is co-produced with ACEP, the Alaska Center for Energy and Power. The exhibit relies on intricate mechanical devices and interactive stations to put the energy needs of Alaskans in the hands of visitors. Early humans relied only on the power generated by their own bodies. Then they discovered fire. Suddenly, our ancestors were able to access energy stored over decades, not just days or months, and transform it into heat and light. This new exhibit looks at the balance of power and energy in Alaska. The exhibit will remain until January 3, 2012.Designer Roger Topp and museum director Carol Diebel deomonstrate the wind tunnel for UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers.A trip to Fairbanks isn't complete without a visit to the University of Alaska Museum of the North. Discover fascinating stories about Alaska's people, places, and wildlife in the museum’s award-winning exhibit galleries - your best introduction to this vast and diverse state. From Alaska’s wildlife to contemporary Alaska Native art, whatever your interest, you'll find something appealing on exhibit. The museum opened a new wing in 2005, which itself has become an architectural icon for the state and a must-see for Alaska visitors. Nationally-recognized architect Joan Soranno and the GDM/HGA architectural team designed the expansion to convey a sense of Alaska, with innovative lines and spaces evoking images of alpine ridges, glaciers, breakup on the Yukon River, and the aurora. The centerpiece of the expanded museum, the Rose Berry Alaska Art Gallery, shows many treasures once in storage but now in public view. The gallery presents the full spectrum of Alaska art – from ancient Eskimo ivory carvings to contemporary paintings and sculpture, both Native and non-Native.

Alaska 2015: Historic Heritage House B&B in Fairbanks
Great value. Clean, cozy, comfortable -- The Alaska Heritage House Bed and Breakfast is a charming place to stay and within walking distance to many interesting places in downtown Fairbanks. Van, Bill and their cute lil' doggy, Mable, make guests feel welcome and happy.
After a delicious breakfast in a family-style setting, complete with china on doilies and a house full of period piece antiques from the early 1900's, take a tour through the multi-level home, appreciate the ambiance, art, and decor; sit by the fireplace or one of the many windows and enjoy reading a garden book or Alaskan novel.
Take a five-minute walk and check out the Jade Boutique for vintage treasures, or a delicious lunch/dinner at Big Daddy's BBQ restaurant or the yummy Thai Noodle restaurant. Bobby's Downtown is an impressive Greek restaurant and bar. There are several karaoke bars.
It's a nice walk to the visitor center along the Chena River near the Marriott Hotel, and the new Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center near the Marriott.
There are plenty of antique and gift shops, a Co-op Plaza with lots of nice stores including the Two Street Gallery and a full menu Crepery. The Ice Museum is closed until May, and the Art House Gallery on Cushman & 10th near the bus station is well worth a visit.
And in the opposite direction down Cowles from the Heritage House is the 9th Ave. Hostel where the northern lights can sometimes be seen, a central bus station for trips to the Santa Claus House, North Pole, University of Alaska Museum of the North, etc. About a 15-minute walk further down Cowles is a full service camera store in the strip mall by the gym.
If you opt for a rental car in winter, try to book a vehicle with snow tires.
Enjoy! There's much to see and do :)

Alaska 2018 Fairbanks, AK
Continuing on our travels north, we arrive in Fairbanks,AK. We will be here over the summer solstice (June 21), which means no darkness at all! We walked to the University of Alaska to visit the Museum of the North, then we walked to Pioneer Park to check it out. The weather was clear and sunny (all 24 hrs of each day)!

Fairbanks, Alaska in the winter is freaking amazing and should be on every travelers bucket list.
We spent a week up there in March: enjoying the snow, chasing the northern lights, dog sledding, going to sled dog races, sipping cocktails with glasses made of ice in the ice museum, visiting the sculpture festival, and SO MUCH MORE.
Check out Fairbanks, Alaska... In the winter! It's one of the most incredible places I've ever been.
