Expansion Set to Unite USM Gulf Park Campus College of Nursing for First Time since Katrina
When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, the Nursing Program at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus was also hit hard. Despite damage to the nursing classrooms and facilities, the program immediately carried on the tradition of providing a variety of nursing degrees, in part because of a cooperative agreement with Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport.
Layla Essary tells us how the current nursing building expansion project underway at the Gulf Park campus will unite nursing students & staff for the first time in a decade on one campus.

A Chat with the President - Protecting Our Environmental Legacy
In this segment of A Chat with the President, Dr. Martha Saunders visits with Biology Professor Frank Moore about the Lake Thoreau Center for Environmental Education, located just a few miles west of the Hattiesburg campus. Following the vision of a former faculty member who once owned the property, Southern Miss is enhancing it for scientific, educational and recreational use.
The 300-acre site is a beautiful lush forest setting with abundant wildlife, hiking trails, a fishing lake, beaver pond and picnic tables. The university plans to eventually add a building to accommodate classrooms, research labs and general meeting areas.
The Lake Thoreau Center comprises two preserves: the Leon Eubanks Nature Preserve on the original Eubanks property and the adjoining Longleaf Preserve, a 160-acre tract of University property characterized by longleaf pine habitat, which once dominated the southeastern United States. Lake Thoreau is also accessible by bike and hiking trails from the Longleaf Trace. Lake Thoreau is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday.
