Exploring Canyonlands | Upheaval Dome Hike
This is my last video from Utah before I head north. In it, I explore a little slice of Canyonlands National Park hiking to Upheaval Dome. There are two theories as to how this massive crater came to be. Watch the video to see what the hypothesis are. I camp at my favorite BLM spot on my journey, so far. Utah has so much adventure to offer and there is so much more I need to explore...

Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah is known for its dramatic desert landscape carved by the Colorado River. Island in the Sky is a huge, flat-topped mesa with panoramic overlooks. Other notable areas include the towering rock pinnacles known as the Needles, the remote canyons of the Maze and the Native American rock paintings in Horseshoe Canyon.
Whitewater rapids flow through Cataract Canyon.
Upheaval Dome is an impact structure, the deeply eroded bottom-most remnants of an impact crater, in Canyonlands National Park southwest of the city of Moab, Utah, in the United States.[1] The crater is located in the Island in the Sky section of the park, and is approximately 42 miles (67 km) by vehicle from Moab.

Upheaval Canyon Backpacking
In the northwest corner of Canyonlands National Park is Upheaval Canyon, the drainage from the Upheaval Dome area to Green River. I hiked in on the Syncline Loop Trail and camped two nights at the Syncline backcountry campsite (permit required). The objective was to hike to the White Rim Road and Green River via Upheaval Canyon Trail but I didn't quite reach the river. The wide flat area near the river is known as Upheaval Bottom.

Trail to Druid Arch, Canyonlands Utah April 12, 2016
This hike was so beautiful and so fun! It was every bit as enchanting as being in Disneyland, but better because it's real. If you ever go to Canyonlands, make sure you take this hike.

My video from an awesome 11 mile day hike to druid arch in the needles district of canyonlands national park in southeastern Utah. This hike features beautiful views of open desert, the la Sal mountains, a fun trek through elephant canyon and a fun rock scramble. This hike took me about 5.5 hours. Enjoy!

Restoring Arches and Canyonlands National Parks
In our ongoing series America the Beautiful, celebrating the National Park Service's 100-year anniversary, we visit Utah, where winter at Canyonlands and Arches National Parks brings an escape from the crowds. Jeff Glor reports on how park officials are leading a program to restore the ancient landscape.
The Mysterious Upheaval Dome Vortex
WE SEE HERE CANYONLANDS UPHEAVAL DOME VORTEX in the Island in the Sky region of the National Park. Upheaval Dome is one of the most mysterious features of the park on account of proposed hypothesis of its creation.

UPHEAVAL DOME CREATION.
There are two theories on how the Upheaval Dome was created. One idea proposes a salt inclusion, which is a fascinating geologic process that takes millions of years to form. Look it up, it's more technical than I care to describe here. The second and more explosive proposed causation is that of an impact crater for a meteor. Upheaval Dome does contain the tale-tale features of crater: a raised circular rim, a central peak, and slumping debris off of the crater rim.
VIEWING UPHEAVAL DOME.
You can find the Upheaval Dome in the Island in the Sky region of Canyonlands National Park. The parking lot for this feature is just past Whale Rock. You will have to go for a short hike to get to the first view point high on the southern rim. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. There are now railings along Upheaval Dome's rim so don't get too adventurous near the vertical ledge. There is an official second lookout (where this video is filmed) about a half mile further along the rim. The trail is mostly on sandstone and can be a little tricky to follow in a few places. I'd recommend wearing good sturdy shoes and taking a hat and water on a sunny day.
HIKING THE SYNCLINE LOOP TRAIL.
There is a primitive trail the circumnavigates Upheaval Dome. This trail is the only way to get the crater floor. It is a 8 mile loop and does require some scrambling. I recommend hiking it in a clockwise manner, as I prefer to go up scramble sections rather than down them. I can not stress enough the need to start this trail at the trail-head, be able to follow the correct trail via the cairns that are placed to guide the route (a ranger at the visitor center told us the Syncline Trail is the area of the park that has more rescue missions made on it than any other trail in the park). DO NOTE attempt this hike on a hot day. There is almost no shade and the sandstone cliffs that rise above you along this trail act like an oven. Be safe. Be wise.
That being said, so far this is my favorite trial I have done in Canyonlands. It goes through a variety of scenery changes making it feel like four hikes instead of one. I highly recommend it.
WE SEE HERE TRIVIA!
-----------------------------------
Utah has a list of unique off the beaten path geologic sites to see in the state. All but Upheaval Dome are outside of National Parks. This one has been on my list to see for years. Other trips to Canyonlands brought me close, but never to this mysterious feature. It did not disappoint.

Canyonlands National Park: Day Trip to Island in the Sky (North Section)
We visited Canyonlands in September 2015, while we were staying at Arches N.P. This video was taken on Whale Rock, and gives a quick overview of this section of the park.
American Southwest (#17): Upheaval Salt Dome & Mesa Arch, Utah
Outside the park's boundary three mountain ranges break the pattern of the flat-topped landscape. To the east rise the La Sals; to the south, the Abajos; to the southwest, the Henrys. Rain that passes by the arid soil of Canyonlands keeps these mountains mantled in forests of pine and fir. On the Island, vegetation is sparser. Oper fields of Indian ricegrass and other grasses and pinyon-juniper forests survive on fewer than 10 inches of rain a year. Coyotes, squirrels, ravens, hawks, and smaller birds share the food of these lands. Cattle and horses once grazed here; abandoned water troughs and fences are reminders of those bygone days.
Geologists would probably single out Upheaval Dome as the oddest geologic feature on Island in the Sky. Measuring 1,500 feet deep, the dome does not look like a dome but rather like a crater. How was Upheaval Dome created? One theory suggests that slowmoving underground salt deposits pushed layers of sandstone upward. A recent theory suggests that the dome was created when a meteor hit. Whatever the origin of the dome, the present-day landform of a jaggededged crater is the result of erosion.
