V/Line trains at Little River; 2019 Avalon Airshow specials
On March 1st - 3rd 2019 the biannual Australian International Airshow was held at Avalon Airport southwest of Melbourne near Geelong. To help transport thousands of people to the event V/Line runs extra trains to Lara station on the Geelong line, where patrons are then transported to the airshow using shuttle bus.
Filmed at the quiet Little River station on Saturday 2nd we see V/Line Vlocity DMU's operate the extra airshow trains, passing through the station at speed. We also see the regular V/Line Geelong line services, including N Class locomotive hauled services on Warrnambool trains. The first train we see is the down Warrnambool service which is the first train of the day from Melbourne towards Lara. Fun fact: the first weekend trains of the day towards Warrnambool are the only times Warrnambool trains stop at Little River.
The airshow trains used to be a mecca for railfans as V/Line would put on everything and anything to accommodate the large crowds. In the past V/Line would use push - pull N & P Class trains (with up to 8 H type carriages), 7 car N Class locomotive hauled trains with N type carriages, Vlocity and Sprinter DMU's. Here's a video from 2009 which demonstrates this large variety:
Unfortunately as more modern Vlocity DMU's entered service they progressively starting taking over the airshow specials, with fewer locomotive hauled trains each year. The last time V/Line used a locomotive hauled train was in 2015 when a single push-pull P Class train ran. From 2017 on wards all the airshow specials have been operated exclusively by Vlocity's. If anything this video is a testament of how a once great railfan event has become quite stale in terms of variety.
On the plus side though the Vlocities mean that V/Line can now run a faster service to and from the airshow. And there's no denying that the train is the best way to get to the airshow as the Princess Freeway clogs up with traffic. As I was driving home around 11:30am after filming this video the traffic had backed up all the way to Sneydes Road near Hoppers Crossing; well over 25km (15.53 miles) away from the airport!
I've also shared all the photos I took at the airshow on my Facebook page:
V/Line Vlocity trains around Bacchus Marsh (Ballarat Line Melbourne's West)
English - Many people find these V/Line Vlocity units here in Victoria boring. Capture them in the right location and they actually look pretty good - especially the PTV liveried units.
The Bacchus Marsh area has some well known and classic railway locations and the Vlocity units are featured at some of those locations.
Vlocity units are comon sight across the V/Line Passenger network and run most of the Bacchus Marsh services with the exception of some locomotive hauled services during the weekday peaks.

This video is about V-line Traralgon to Melbourne, can't drive at the moment so took the train. Nice relaxing journey. Train goes faster than the car but because of station stops is not so quick as me driving home.

The V/Line Passenger A Class on The Bacchus Marsh Line - Australian Trainspotting
English - The V/Line Passenger A Class was a rebuild from the original B Class locomotive. After V/Line Passenger was split from the freight business, V/Line was allocated A60, A62, A66 and A70.
Originally, the A class appeared right across Victoria on a variety of freight and passenger trains. In their final years, the V/Line A class spent most of their time hauling passenger trains between Melbourne and Bacchus Marsh on the western line towards Ballarat. The last service ran August 24th 2018.
As a tribute, here is the A class locomotive in various scenes between 2012 and 2018 between Southern Cross Station and Bacchus Marsh. A60, A62, A66 and A70 are featured on this presentation.

4K - Rare Coverage of Australian Trains at Warrnambool - V/Line Passenger & Pacific National Freight
English - The Warrnambool railway scene in Victoria's South West rarely gets any coverage. It's at least three hours from Melbourne and nowhere near the popular standard gauge and interstate workings.
The railway scene at Warrnambool is still interesting as all of the passenger workings are still locomotive hauled. Four weekday services between Warrnambool and Melbourne are hauled by the V/Line Passenger N Class Locomotive and there are three return workings on Saturday and Sunday.
Pacific National also runs a Monday to Friday Intermodal Service which arrives around 8am from Melbourne and departs around 630pm. It's the same looking train with the same G Class Diesel Locomotive, but at least Warrnambool still has a freight train!
Enjoy the Warrnambool railway scene. In the future, the Locomotive hauled trains will be history and V/Locity units will be the main motive power.

Melbourne V Line Trains
Melbourne's Southern Cross Station is one of the best in all of Australia. The architectural form of the station resembles the waves of the sea and the wind as the city of Melbourne can get windy at times. The City is proud to be the sporting capital of the Southern Hemisphere. It connects the southern states to the rest of the country. V Line Trains are inter city and regional trains. The Overlander is one of the oldest operational services of the state. Operating between Melbourne and Adelaide. The XPT Sydney service is from New South Wales and managed by that state. Unlike many other countries the Railways in Australia are state owned and operated, but funded by the federal government of Australia.

V/Line Trains at Bunyip and Longwarry (Gippsland Line)
In this video we see some V/Line trains at Bunyip and Longwarry, two small stations on the Gippsland line east of Melbourne. Here we see various V/Line Vlocity DMU's as well as an appearance from the Maryvale Paper Train heading towards Melbourne with G515 & VL356.
We start the video at Bunyip. Named after a mythical Aboriginal creature that lurks near waterbodies and will gobble people alive; Bunyip is a small town with a population of 2,468. The station precinct is unique as it features a disused goods platform with a crane. Further up the line is a preserved electrical substation and overhead stanchions.
The Gippsland line was the only regional rail line in Victoria to have ever been electrified. The line between Dandenong and Traralgon was electrified between 1954 to 1956 due to an expected increase in briquette traffic from the mines in the Latrobe Valley. However as industries and homes converted to natural gas for heating, freight traffic declined considerably.
By the 1980's with reduced freight traffic and the L Class electric locomotives withdrawn from service, it was no longer cost-effective to keep the overhead intact. The overhead was decommissioned from Traralgon to Warragul in 1987 (where Comeng trains ran suburban services to Melbourne), Bunyip in 1998, and to Pakenham in 2001. As part of the Regional Fast Rail project the remaining overhead infrastructure was removed around 2005 (probably around the same time Bunyip and Longwarry stations were upgraded to more modern standards).
As part of electrification the Gippsland line was also largely duplicated, except for this small section of the line between Bunyip and Longwarry. The Bunyip River meant another railway bridge would have had to be built and was placed in the too-hard basket. However as part of the Gippsland Line Upgrade this section of the line will be duplicated by 2022. We see a couple of clips from the rail bridge.
We finish the video at Longwarry, a small town with a population of 2,004.
