Summit County Recpath Safety and Etiquette
Follow these tips to ensure that the Summit County Recreational Pathway remains safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Colorado Cycling Keystone to Dillon Bike Path
Colorado Cycling Keystone to Dillon Bike Path -
This is one of my favorite stretches of the Summit County Rec Path.
This paved bike and hike path stretches from Breckenridge to Keystone, Copper Mountain, Frisco, Dillon, and Vail. I'm still new to exploring it and have not seen all of the paths yet.
One of the many great things about Summit County, and specifically Breckenridge is that the public transit and bike paths are so wonderful that a car is absolutely unnecessary here.
I have been injured and unable to get too adventurous since February, 2015. I hope to start on some single-track in the next month or two. First I have to focus on just learning to walk again though.
There are plenty of hardcore bicycling activities in Summit County, from downhill mountain biking that is supported by ski lifts and gondolas to skate parks and dirt jump tracks.

I made this trip in January 2018. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Independence Pass, Colorado
At 12,100 feet, the Continental Divide separates the eastern and western halves of the United States. A little parking lot and restroom are all the facilities available; no curios or kiosks; and a well-maintained footpath to a breathtaking observation point right at the snow line. Even in late July, patches of frost remain.
For the more intrepid, a well-worn dirt path follows the ridge line at the top of the range. An exhilarating walk in clean mountain air will never be forgotten.
Backcountry SPLITBOARD Loveland Pass, Colorado 11,990 ft
Round 1 we went down North East Glades
This is a fantastic little backcountry primer. Drive to the top of the pass, get out of the car, and ski down to the bottom of the pass through nicely gladed terrain. Have your designated driver pick you up at the bottom, and repeat. There are countless lines through the woods and around natural features in this area. Ski it with a partner to avoid getting lost in the backcountry! There is a distinct traverse near the bottom of the glade. Stay right to get back to the road.
Round 2 we hiked up to the NorthWest Bowl
A quick hike up the ridge from the pass provides access to a wide open snow field funneling down into a glade. If you stay within 100 yards or so of the road you should be able to easily make it back to the car at the bottom. Have your driver drop you and your partner off at the pass and then hike the ridge and descend back to the road. Beautiful turns in deep pow!
Again, this is avalanche terrain. Even if the snow pack is stable in the glades, it does not mean it is stable and safe in the bowl. Use extreme caution and know the forecast prior to skiing the bowl.
This bowl funnels into gladed terrain near the bottom. Ski the trees, taking care to avoid hidden boulders and stumps. There is one choke point when you are almost down that may be more difficult for less experienced skiers; thus, everyone should be an expert skier despite the relative ease of the terrain at higher elevations. You'll want to eventually traverse right to get back to the car and the road. Hitchhike up to the top or have your driver pick you up.
Please note: if you don't have proper avalanche rescue gear (beacon, shovel, probe), then you shouldn't be skiing here. This is easy to access, but is not patrolled or controlled.
