Val d'Orcia, Tuscany - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Val d'Orcia in Tuscany, Italy, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. A large valley area covering thousands of hectares, it contains several towns including the separate World Heritage site of Pienza. Famous for it's gorgeous wheat fields, it's also well known for wines, pecorino cheese, salami, and of course, olives. Join me as I take in the sights and sunshine of this gorgeous part of the world!

Val d'Orcia is a wide valley located in Tuscany, in the province of Siena, north and east of Mount Amiata and close to the border with Umbria. Crossed by the river Orcia in the center, which gives it its name, it is characterized by pleasant landscape views and by various centers of medieval origin, two of which are very well known as Pienza and Montalcino. Characteristic tree is the cypress, typical Pici food and wine, Cinta senese salami, Pecorino di Pienza, Brunello di Montalcino and the new denomination of DOC Orcia wine. The valley is also an important park, natural, artistic and cultural, and since 2 July 2004 it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for the excellent state of conservation of the landscape, as produced by an intelligent work of human settlement , which has had a significant influence on many Renaissance artists. The Val d'Orcia is a territory of high tourist interest thanks to the historical-landscape peculiarities as well as characteristic villages such as San Quirico d'Orcia and Castiglione d'Orcia. Wine and food tourism is also particularly developed. The whole area is an important transit point for the pilgrimage routes that still trace the ancient Via Francigena. For some years the Val d'Orcia area has been particularly appreciated thanks to the rediscovery and enhancement of a particular tourism linked to the railway. Through the rediscovery of ancient historical lines no longer active for regular service such as the Asciano-Monte Antico and the execution of historic steam trains, the territory has been made even more accessible and reachable with a different approach that sees the train as a means of transport useful for the enhancement of the territory and for the preservation of a railway and architectural heritage otherwise destined for oblivion and decay.
The Val d'Orcia Tuscany Italy Unesco World Heritage Site
The Val d'Orcia, or Valdorcia, is a region of Tuscany, central Italy, which extends from the hills south of Siena to Monte Amiata. It is characterised by gentle, carefully-cultivated hills occasionally broken by gullies and by picturesque towns and villages such as Pienza (rebuilt as an ideal town in the 15th century under the patronage of Pope Pius II), Radicofani (home to the notorious brigand-hero Ghino di Tacco) and Montalcino (the Brunello di Montalcino is counted among the most prestigious of Italian wines). It is a landscape which has become familiar through its depiction in works of art from the Renaissance painting to the modern photograph.
In 2004 the Val d'Orcia was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites under these criteria:
* Criterion (iv): The Val d'Orcia is an exceptional reflection of the way the landscape was re-written in Renaissance times to reflect the ideals of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing pictures.
* Criterion (vi): The landscape of the Val d'Orcia was celebrated by painters from the Scuola Senese, which flourished during the Renaissance. Images of the Val d'Orcia, and particularly depictions of landscapes where people are depicted as living in harmony with nature, have come to be seen as icons of the Renaissance and have profoundly influenced the development of landscape thinking.

Val d'Orcia Landscapes ???????? Italy Best Place Video - Travel & Discover
The landscape of Val d’Orcia is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when it was integrated in the territory of the city-state in the 14th and 15th centuries to reflect an idealized model of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing picture. The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics, flat chalk plains out of which rise almost conical hills with fortified settlements on top, inspired many artists. Their images have come to exemplify the beauty of well-managed Renaissance agricultural landscapes.

VAL D'ORCIA in Primavera - Spring in Tuscany - HD

Il paesaggio della Vald' Orcia, caratterizzato da un susseguirsi di rilievi collinari, è segnato dal tracciato medievale della via Cassia (che intorno al VIII) secolo si sposta tra Firenze e Bolsena da 20 a 35 chilometri più a occidente dell' originale tracciato romano): un tracciato che trova lungo il percorso i centri principali di San Quirico, Castiglione, Radicofani, e sul diverticolo per la Valdichiana, Pienza e Montepulciano.
Grazie alla presenza della grande via che collegava Roma al nord d' Italia e ai paesi d' Oltralpe - e che perciò fu detta anche Francigena - il sistema insediativo della valle si incrementò decisamente intorno al X-XI secolo, epoca in cui l' affermarsi della feudalità portò alla organizzazione di un sistema di castelli e fortilizi.
Percorsa già nel 1093 da Sigeric, arcivescovo di Canterbury, il suo massicciato affiora ancora dal suolo e ci rende ragione del perché di tante architetture oggi apparentemente sparse a caso sulle colline: pensiamo al complesso sistema delle pievi e dei castelli, ai borghi un tempo fulgidi e oggi ridotti a sparute frazioni.
A Siena del resto (la Sena etrusca, la Saena Julia romana, la Siena longobarda) i luoghi della storia si intrecciano lungo un percorso di tre millenni.
Il frequente transito di uomini e di merci lungo l' arteria viaria, ha fatto sì che alcuni dei centri abitati assumessero un particolare peso all' interviabilità per la Valdichiana.
Appare quindi evidente l' interesse al controllo di questa valle da parte della Repubblica di Siena. L' espansione senese in Valdichiana può dirsi conclusa nel XV secolo, e l' epoca coincide con una diversa sistemazione della viabilità e dei centri urbani.
La Repubblica si impegnò infatti a realizzare il ponte sull' Orcia, tra Bagno Vignoni e Rocca d' Orcia; rese definitivo lo spostamento del tracciato della via romana dalla valle del Paglia - ove si snodava in origine - in direzione di Radicofani, che con la sua Rocca avrebbe meglio garantito il controllo; provvide di nuove fortificazioni tutti i centri della valle. Dopo la metà del Cinquecento, entrata nell' orbita fiorentina insieme ai domini senesi, la Valdorcia conserva un valore solo come area agricola; in concomitanza con i lavori di bonifica della Valdichiana la viabilità da San Quirico per Pienza - Montepulciano e Chiusi viene ad assumere un ruolo determinante.
