Warning: This Video Will Stoke Your Appetite
I’m in Venice, doing research for the next edition of my Rick Steves Venice guidebook — and I just spent a great evening updating restaurant listings with the help of two American expats, Maya and Adam Stonecastle of Venice Bites Food Tours. We all happen to share the same favorite cicchetti bar, Cantinone Già Schiavi. Join us now as Maya explains what I’m having with my wine.
Here’s how this delightful place is written up in my guidebook:
[$] Enoteca Cantine del Vino Già Schiavi, with a wonderfully characteristic cicchetti-bar ambience, is much loved for its €1.20 cicchetti, €4 sandwiches (order from list on board), and €2 glasses of wine. You’re welcome to enjoy your wine and finger food at the bar, in the back room surrounded by wine bottles, or out on the sidewalk. (Specify “fuori” to sit outside, and they’ll provide plastic cups; please don’t sit on the bridge.) This is primarily a wine shop with great prices for bottles to go (Mon-Sat 8:30-20:30, closed Sun, 100 yards from Accademia art museum on San Trovaso canal; facing the Accademia, take a right and then a forced left at the canal to the second bridge — it’s at Dorsoduro 992, tel. 041-523-0034, they have no WC).
Venice Food Tour: Rialto Markets & Cicchetti Tasting with Wine | Walks of Italy
The best way to get acquainted with Venice is through its food. On our Venice Food Tour we spend time with an expert local guide exploring the historic Rialto Fish Market, indulging our senses at one of the world's oldest spice stores, meeting local food vendors, making very important pit stops at numerous cafes and restaurants. And, since this is Italy, we eat and drink our weight in local delicacies, like Venice's answer to tapas, 'cicchetti', along the way.

OG Venice Presents: Eating in a Venetian Bacaro with SALVMERIA, Bacaro Contemporaneo
The everyday foods found in Venetian bacari - fresh and even raw seafood, Italian cured meats, regional cheeses and local vegetables - are considered luxury foods in much of world. Yet, here in Venice you can eat a plate of these foods for less money than it costs to eat in a fast-food or chain restaurant, and enjoy your meal in a more relaxed environment while you're at it.
Of course, the existence of Bacari in Venice is no secret and Venetian Cicchetti are universally well-renowned snacks. Yet, many visitors to Venice, even regular visitors, can be hesitant to enter into and order food in bacari, not because they don't want the food, but really just because they're not sure which food is which and how to order it without disrupting the lively stream of life in the Bacaro.
With that in mind, and especially our own friends who have told us: We saw the cicchetti, but weren't quite sure how it worked, we decided to open a series of video posts with an introduction to eating in a Venetian bacaro.
What is a Bacaro?
A Bacaro is a traditional Venetian snack bar where both local Venetians and tourists mingle over spritz, wine, snacks and cicchetti. Visiting a bacaro, whether at lunch time or at cocktail hour can be one of the most fun, the most convenient, and also the least expensive ways to taste some of the best food available in Venice.
Who goes to the Bacaro?
Venetians from all walks of life and, as Giorgio, the owner of SALVMERIA, says it, also tourists who appreciate the Venetian style ... those who want to know the Venetian style of how to drink, how to eat and how to live.
Why do Venetians Often Choose to Eat in a Bacaro?
Because in a bacaro we have the best food at the best price and the atmosphere and the company are very friendly.
Thank you SALVMERIA: Bacaro Contemporaneo for your warm welcome and for speaking with us!

Italian Food Review | Our Favorite Restaurant in Venice, Italy Travel Video Transcript:
Alright guys snowy day here in Venice. How rare. We were not expecting this but the Beast from the East has arrived. Look at all of that snow.
The plan for today we're going to take it easy on the sightseeing. It is going to be very light. We are going to get some food. We're hoping to find some Venetian dishes. Sam spotted a restaurant that he thought looked really good.
Trying to decide what will he eat? What will he have? There is a pretty extensive menu and I'm also munching down on the bread plate.
They have a lot of dishes with seafood. I think that is what we're going to go for. Since this is Venice. You know we're out on the water. It seems like a good idea. I'm hungry.
They have a really good special at this restaurant. It is 12 Euros for a set menu at lunchtime. They have how many options here?
Eleven different options to choose from. They are all really different. It ranges from pasta to seafood. I think they even have soups and salads. Special salads. We've ordered 4 different set menus. It comes with beverages. And with my parents. So I went for the white wine. Sam is having red. Generous amounts of wine.
My set menu came with a salad as a starter so I've just finished dressing it a little bit of extra virgin olive oil and some balsamic vinegar.
We're going to start off with Dad's. What did you get? I got calamari that is done properly. It is lightly battered. You've sampled it already. It is lightly cooked.
And it is not overcooked. Most calamari is overcooked so this is delicious. It is good?
It is like the batter is right there but you can really taste the calamari. That is awesome.
I've got a seafood spaghetti and as you can see here you can start seeing some of the seafood right in here. This one was spaghetti pescatore. The fisherman's spaghetti. I'm just going to hack up some of these noodles here. It looks good.
It is nice to be eating seafood and just the way that it is kind of a light sauce. A sauce with herbs and dressings and you can tell it was like a little bit of olive oil in there too.
Sweet and sour sardines. I'll just take it right over here. This is a dish that dates back to the middle ages and it is how um the fishermen would preserve, look at that, the sardines they would keep it in vinegar.
It is really tasty. I like that the raisins add a bit of sweetness to it.
The sardines are really tender.
Because our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs we got two desserts. This is outside of the set menu but we ordered the tiramisu and the pannacotta which. They are both delicious.
This meal was outstanding. One of our best meals on this trip in Europe in 2018 to be honest. In total it came to 12 Euros per person for the meal for the mains with a big glass of wine and salad. Dessert at 5 Euros each. Again excellent value.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.

Dining Fine in Venice
We include half the dinners on Rick Steves Europe Tours, and for the other dinners, we set people free to enjoy meals on their own. That means we can dine in smaller places where larger groups can’t fit. One of my Venice favorites is Luca’s Osteria alle Testiere. Luca is a classic quality restaurateur — look at the joy on his face as he describes the vintners who produce his carefully chosen wines as friends, and then how he cuddles up with his beloved wine drawers. The challenge of dining in Venice is finding a quality, personality-driven restaurant. It can be done, but you need a good tour guide or a good guidebook. Buon appetito!
Thanks for following along here on YouTube as I guide our Best of Europe in 21 Days tour (ricksteves.com/europe-tour). You can find all of my dispatches from the road at ricksteves.com/blog.

Eating in Venice
We stopped into Osteria da Alberto in Venice, Italy to have a snack and some afternoon wine. As with most good meals, it isn't just great food and company that makes the meal great, but also the atmosphere. Osteria da Alberto has unique atmosphere in spades.
Venice & Milan Vlog | The Quest for Food || ThatsSoYin
It took me almost a cumulation of 48 hours to finally upload this video. It didn't upload 4 times and I'm so over the slow wifi here. To be completely honest, Venice and Milan were okay. I wish the people here weren't so rude because it really grinded my gears. If you're planning to travel to Europe, I recommend buying your tickets online in advance because it's cheaper and you don't have to wait in long lines. If you're skeptical about the food, Yelp works out here! I'm currently in Rome and I still haven't found pasta that has WOWed me. It's okay though. I hope you all enjoyed this Vlog and found it really fun.
LOVE YOU

75 min.VeniceThere are several great places to eat between Piazza San Marco and your next stop (Ca' d'Oro). I recommend either the simple yet hearty and authentic fare at Osteria La Campana hidden in plain sight on the main drag (or, a bit out of the way, Trattoria Cea), or splashing out on lunch at the excellent Bistrot de Venise, many of its recipes from Renaissance-era Italian and French cookbooks.

7:00pm Dinner
90 min.VeniceCongratulations. It's been a long day, stuffed with art and history. Time to celebrate by digging into a sumptuous meal—seafood, if that's your thing, because it certainly is Venice's.
Just remember: Venice is unlike the rest of Italy, where 7:30pm is considered an early dinner. In Venice, 7pm is about normal for starting dinner, and many restaurants shut their kitchens before 9pm (when, in southern parts of Italy, things are just getting going).
Visit Torcello, Murano and Burano—three islands in the Venetian Lagoon—on this tour from Venice by motorboat.
