Venice Music Project welcomes you!
Venice Music Project: our story in 2013, a group of internationally recognized musicians, tired of traveling the world, decided to create a new musical reality in Venice.
Performing on period instruments or exact copies, in exactly the manner of Vivaldi’s time, we not only continue our “musical archaeology,” finding manuscripts of music in archives and libraries and performing them for the first time in 200-300 years, we have expanded our mission to include the restoration of the beautiful and historic venues where we perform. In this manner, we hope to leave a greater Venetian patrimony for this and future generations to enjoy.
To hear Venice’s musical innovations performed in their original settings is absolutely breathtaking. It is thanks to the strong musical traditions of Venice, sponsored by the families that were the backbone of the Republic of the Serenissima, that we have today's music.
Without Venetian Church music and Monteverdi's huge advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed.
Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli, and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented, but also there would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and
contemporary music as we know it.
Even as we restore, we also create: the original pastiche that was created in 2014 by Liesl Odenweller and Andrea di Robilant based on the true 18th-century Venetian love story as recounted in Robilant’s book A Venetian Affair, has quickly become a favorite, drawing international audiences to the performances in Venice. The production, with staging and sets by the acclaimed operatic team Barbe and Doucet and music by Venetia Antiqua, narrated by Robilant himselt, will tour in the US in 2018.

Much has been made about the wonders of Venice, but few ever venture deep enough across its less touristy, yet still historical hidden places. Beyond hundreds of canals and a diverse architectural style, a secret facet of Venetian life lives on, in which the journey of hand crafting gondola wooden oars and loomed fabrics remains rooted in ancient folk traditions.

A Venetian Affair
“One day, my father came home with a shoebox filled with old, compacted letters...” -- this is how we meet acclaimed author Andrea di Robilant, whose “A Venetian Affair” became an instant bestseller. Several years later, through a chance meeting, is born the idea of enhancing the story of Andrea and Giustiniana's love with music of the time, most particularly by the composer Johann Adolf Hasse, who with his wife, the famous opera star, Faustina Bordoni, was a friend and co-conspirator of the lovers.
This original pastiche, with Andrea di Robilant himself reading from the love letters, and filling in the details, and Venetia Antiqua Ensemble enhancing moments of the story with music of Hasse, Vivaldi, Marcello, and other great Venetians of the time, brings to life this story of an impossible love at the height of the Venetian Republic.

Amazing Timelapse of 5.5 Billion Euro Barrier that Should Save Venice
Italian engineers are hoping the Moses project will ensure that Venice never floods again.
The scheme has been in the planning since the worst ever flooding in 1966 but has been beset by problems.
The cost of the 78 bright yellow mobile barriers has more than tripled from the original estimate of 1.6 billion euros to 5.5 billion euros.
Report by Jeremy Barnes.

Xavier Veilhan: Studio Venezia / French Pavilion, Venice Art Biennale 2017
Xavier Veilhan represents France at the 57th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. For the French Pavilion, Xavier Veilhan conceived a musical space in which professional musicians from all over the world work throughout the duration of the exhibition, which is called Studio Venezia. On the occasion of the preview days of the Venice Biennale, we had the chance to speak with Xavier Veilhan about his project. In this interview, Veilhan talks about the basic idea behind project, his connection to music and the kind of music he likes, how he choose the musicians, the difference between music and visual arts, and how Studio Venezia relates to Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau.
Curated by Lionel Bovier and Christian Marclay, Xavier Veilhan's Studio Venezia brings together musicians, sound technicians, programmers and producers, amongst others. Numerous instruments – familiar ones such as a grand piano, synthesizers, drum kits, as well as more exotic musical tools such as the Cristal Baschet (in this video played by Frédéric Lo) – are integrated into the space, and enable musicians from different horizons and genres (from classical to electronic and from new music compositions to folkloric styles) to work on site, either individually or collaboratively. Rather than attending concerts, visitors will instead be invited to listen, watch and bear witness to musical creations in progress.

The life has the semblance of butterflies, myriads of instants are placed on each day to die in our lifetimes. The image and the sound have the gift to preserve our yesterday, and the memory of our passage, in a moment of Eternal Time through the Art.
