How to Display a Large US Flag
Field Flag Display Notes
This field flag shown is a 20 by 38 foot flag. You can purchase Large Field Flags (3 sizes) at thestore.gameops.com. Notes pertain to this size flag. You can adjust for larger or smaller flags accordingly.
US Flag Code Notes: (
- The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
- When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left. Typically in sports this display is based off the center of the stadium (for example in baseball) or facing the hard camera (is displayed on a video board or for TV).
-The Flag Code states the flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free..however in a respectful display for anthems this use widely accepted. Many slightly wave the flag to give the appearance of it flying.
When unfurled you should have between 24 and 32 people surrounding the flag, about 7 on the long sides and 5 on the shorter sides. Adjust accordingly for your staff and flag.
For best results practice several times using the same staff you use on game nights.
Flag can be carried on the court by 7-10 people. It should be bunched up longwise with the long side ends easy to find.
Once in place, staff for the two longer side stand on either side of the flag. Staff for the shorter sides should be on either end, ready to grab the flag as it is unfurled.
For best results one end of the flag should be stationary, with one side moving away from the original line. As the flag is opened completely the shorter side staff fills in and hold the flag. Holding the flag around shoulder height allows for a full view of the flag, a comfortable position for the holders and prevents the flag from touching the ground.
Following the anthem and presentation of the colors, the flag can be gathered again, reversing the process above. The two sides can both gather the flag. It is recommended to lift the flag when gathering so you can see that the flag doesn't droop.
Once gathered the long narrow flag can be taken off the court and stored in a proper manner.
See the flag code for details for addition details and flag etiquette. While the flag code could be interpreted this style of display to be improper, most military personnel approve of this display for sporting events when carried out in a respectful manner.

The 241; 2013 Beirute Memorial Tribute in HD
October 23 1983 an explosive laden truck drove into the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut Lebanon and exploded (first of such action to take place to an American outpost), killing 241 U.S. military personnel. 10 years later some grateful civilians and retired citizens of Jacksonville NC created a Wall to commemorate the 241 Americans who lost their lives on a mission of peace. Since the commemoration of The Wall the city of Jacksonville has held a ceremony to pay tribute. This year commemorates the 30th year since that tragedy & this is my small effort to pay tribute to the that anniversary but mostly The 241

31 May, 2008 - Freedom Run Across America2- Indianapolis, IN
These videos were taken in Indianapolis, Indiana (Speedway Post 500) during a fund raiser sponsored by the American Legion Riders Motorcycle Club and Speedway Post 500. Tom and Warren Knoll began their charity run March 1, 2008 in San Diego, CA and plan to finish July 4th, 2008 in Washington, DC. Below is the background and more details on the 2008 Freedom Run across America:
From The Charity Event Site:

info at usfreedomrun dot com
The 2008 Freedom Run across America is dedicated to raising funds for the
Wounded Warrior Project, which assists wounded veterans and their families, the
Sunshine Foundation, which grants wishes to seriously ill and abused children, and the Challenged Athlete Foundation, which assists disabled athletes.
The run will be led by original 1978 Ironman Tom Knoll, now age 75, and his son, Warren, 44, who will both run 3,300 miles from coast to coast. Warren will also bike across the country, possibly marking the first time an individual has both run and biked cross-country in the same event. This will be Tom's second cross-USA charity run. In 1983, Tom ran across the United States for the Sunshine Foundation in 64 days, averaging 46 miles per day.
The run will start at the San Diego, California Marine Corps Recruit Depot on March 1st, 2008 and finish at the Marine Corps Memorial in Washington, DC on July 4th, 2008. It will consist of 112 days of at least 30-mile runs.
Tom has completed 185 marathons and ultramarathons, some of which were 100 miles in length. In addition, he has completed nine 250-mile charity runs and one 500-mile charity run around the island of Okinawa for the Shriners and crippled children. He did a Labor Day 300-mile charity run in 3 days and 7 hours for Jerry Lewis and muscular dystrophy, raising over $25,000 in that one event.
Tom is well over the half-million dollar charity mark and expects to reach his lifetime goal of raising $1 million plus for charity with his 2008 cross-country run.
Tom spent 33 years in the Marine Corps, and is a Korea and Vietnam veteran. After 9/11, at the age of 70, he served in Afghanistan and Iraq for a government intelligence agency. Tom now teaches aboard Navy ships for Central Texas College and resides in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the author of the book, Why Not a Million?, which includes details on the conception of the Ironman Triathlon, the Okinawa and Jerry Lewis runs, and his 64-day USA run.
Warren has completed 40 marathons and is a second-generation Ironman, having completed Ironman triathlons in Wisconsin, Florida, St. Croix, and New Zealand. He is a writer for Triathlete Magazine.
In the 2008 Freedom Run, Tom and Warren will each run the 30-mile distance each day. Then Warren will be driven back to the day's start and will bike the same distance.
Throughout the cross-USA run, runners, joggers, walkers, and wheelchair racers are encouraged to join in the run for whatever mileage they desire to do. Warren and Tom will do some public speaking on route to promote physical fitness among children, adults and senior citizens. They will also promote the March 2008 National Challenge of the President's Council on Physical Fitness.
