AVERS JUF - Europe's highest year-round settlement
One country, one summer, one family. 26 letters of the alphabet, 26 cantons. This is our Swiss ABC. We visit 26 new places, covering each letter of the alphabet and every canton.
Today we are in the canton Graubünden, in the east of Switzerland where we visit Avers, a high Alpine valley region and a municipality in the Viamala region. It includes Juf, the highest altitude year-round settlement in Europe.
Despite being surrounded by Romansh speaking areas and the Italian speaking side valley of Valle di Lei, the people here speak German. This goes back to the Walser immigrants who immigrated from the West back in the 13th century.
The village appeared to be empty, we met some goats and geese but just a single human. When considering that only six families live here, a total of 31 people, we were actually quite lucky to see somebody at all.
Nature is rough up here; Juf lies above the tree line, winters – as proven today – are long. We witnessed some pairing toads making their way through the snow. The female, who is bigger than the male, carries the partner. We were wondering whether they are used to pairing in the snow or whether this year was exceptionally cold.
Despite its remote location, Juf can be reached by public transport all year round. A fact which still amazes us.
Probably it does not come as a surprise to you that we had the barbecue place to ourselves. We spent the afternoon playing and cooking lunch over an open fire before heading back home. A good start to our Swiss ABC! Next up is the letter Q.

SAN BERNARDINO SWITZERLAND by drone
San Bernardino is a mountainous village in the canton of Grisons in Switzerland. It is the southern entry point to the San Bernardino tunnel, that complemented the road over the San Bernardino Pass in 1967, opening a new all-year-round road to crossing the Alps.
The village is part of the municipality of Mesocco. The language spoken is Italian, one of the three official languages in the canton of Graubünden.
The church dates from around 1450, only years before the Viamala gorge bridge was opened for traffic, multiplying traffic across the pass.

25Okt2008 THUSIS ZILLIS GR,SWITZERLAND-VIAMALA WANDERUNG-VIAMALA SCHLUCHT-The VIAMALA is the largest ravine in the Canton Graubünden. Up to 300m hugh cliffs from the partial only few meters broad ravine. Leftovers worth seeing from incessant sharpening and grinding of the river are SOME, STRUDELTöPFE, which are to be seen from the ravine gallery. Three bridges from the twentieth and the next to last century span the narrow notch in 70 meters height and offer an impressive view on the foaming water. Remnants of the Roman way are to be still seen today.

Not long ago, it was still peaceful in the small Swiss mountain village of Obermutten. This idyllic settlement of a mere eighty residents was known to virtually no one save a few hikers passing through now and then. Now some sixty million people around the world have either read about or heard of Obermutten. Media reports about the village have appeared in over twenty countries. Obermutten even made it into the main news programme in South Korea.
It all began with a newly created village Facebook page. The local mayor made a remarkable promise in the first video posted on the page: Just click on like, and your profile picture will be posted on the Commune's official notice board. In no time at all, the board was completely covered with fans. In order to deal with the flood of inquiries from fans, it was necessary to resort to hang up the profile pictures on barn walls in the village. In the meantime, the community has increased to over 17'000 fans.

Sursee, Switzerland – where the old meets the new
Let my camera take you on a walk around the old and modern small Swiss town of Sursee, on the River Sure. The film starts with a look at industrial buildings, old and new, and moves on to some of Sursee’s shopping malls. Then it’s into the older centre with its cobbled streets and fortified gateways. The flower shop is worth a second look, as is the elegant water fountain with a statue on top in the square. In between the two, look out for the stepped-gable building with a tower behind: it has a magnificent gilded sundial in the middle of its façade.
