Walking at Victory Column (Siegessäule), Berlin
Walking in and around Victory Column in Berlin. Climbing all the 282 steps up to the top.
The Victory Column (Siegessäule), is a monument in Berlin, Germany. Designed by Heinrich Strack, after 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War, by the time it was inaugurated on 2 September 1873, Prussia had also defeated Austria and its German allies in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and France in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), giving the statue a new purpose. Different from the original plans, these later victories in the so-called unification wars inspired the addition of the bronze sculpture of Victoria, 8.3 metres (27 ft) high and weighing 35 tonnes, designed by Friedrich Drake.
Inside the column is a steep spiral staircase of 282 steps, where it's possible to climb almost to the top of the column, to just under the statue and take in the views over the Tiergarten.

Victory Column, Berlin - Germany Travel Guide
Take a tour of Berlin Victory Column in Germany -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
On the grounds of Berlin, stands tall a monument of historical significance for the German nation.
This monument was erected to memorialize the triumph of victorious Prussia over Denmark in 1864.
The original design did not have the sculpture of Victoria, made of bronze, on top of the column.
It was added in the initial plans and structure as a symbol of honor for Prussia's victories over the Austrian Empire and France.
Familiarly called as ''Golden Else'', Friedrich Drake laid down the artwork for this statue of the Victory Goddess.
The gorgeous mosaic reliefs present in the monument showcase depictions from the 3 wars fought on the German soil.

#FollowMeAround :)

The Sieggeseule or Victory Column is one of the main tourist attractions in Berlin, but also a monument that holds a very interesting history. Originally, it was built to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian War, but afterwards it was given a different meaning related to the unification wars; at this point the Golden statue became an addition. You can also go up to the observation deck and get the most amazing view of the entire city, specially in the summertime. Come #FollowMeAround :)
Siegessäule (Victory Column - Goldelse) - In A Berlin Minute (Week 120)
RE-PUBLISHED (original date: August 16, 2012) -- --
Siegessäule (Victory Column) and especially the Viktoria Statue on top, which Berliners like to call Goldelse is one of the outstanding landmarks in Berlin and should be on everyone's must-see list.
It's located inside Tiergarten and was built between 1864 and 1873 based on a design by Heinrich Strack. Of course, it's about winning wars. I won't indulge.
The reason I will always be so fond of the Siegessaeule and especially the Viktoria is the film Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders, my favorite film. Now that I have finally made it up to the top of the column, I was able to finally see what the angel saw: Der Himmel Uber Berlin.
As much as the view was amazing, I doubt I'll ever make it up there again. My mild case of claustrophobia and fear of heights was tested in the staircase and up at the top. But it was well worth the trip.
It was great to have my friend Andre van Lier visit from Hamburg and walk through the frame. I like it when my friends make it into the videos.
The song is called Pegasus 13 and is by none other than Jason Matherne (
