ABOUT US:
We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly – and most importantly, the real and real funny.
We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test – one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.

Motorbike traffic in Vietnam is insane, but there is a method to the madness. By far the most challenging areas to drive in are the busy cities such as Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. Surprisingly, once you get out of the busy city centers, driving becomes a piece of cake.
There is certainly something to be said about safety in number while driving a scooter in Vietnam. There was a comfort in the fact there are so few cars on the roads. This stands in contrast to a place like Bali, where cars and scooters jockey for position on narrow roads. The most important thing to remember while driving in ANY south east Asian country is that the bigger vehicle has the right of way. Can't argue with that!
Most of the roads between towns and cities were very well maintained. This left you free to focus your attention on the natural beauty of the country as well as keep a sharp lookout for cows on the road. If you're at all a fan of motorcycles, motorbikes, or scooters, you owe it to yourself to do a trip from South to North in Vietnam sometime in your life.
Rush Hour Traffic with motorcycle in Ho Chi Minh city - Vietnam
Traffic jams in Vietnam only frequently take place in Hanoi capital and Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnamese people seem be accustomed to traffic congestion, even miss it whenever they go to other places.
There is no fixed rule for the time the traffic jams to happen but it is worst during the rush hour when everyone is in a hurry to get to work or come back home. Apart from peak hours, the time between 9 am to 10 am and between 3 pm to 4 pm also witnesses long lines of vehicles, mainly motorbikes, struggling to get out of narrow streets. Whenever it rains, the traffic jam gets more terrible with the joining hand of flooding. Taxis are extremely hard to catch or wave during the downpour. However, it only takes about 30 minutes on average for a standstill and 2 hours to get through the worst, not really bad compared to that of other countries.

Seeing the Top Gear Vietnam special only further increased the anticipation for one day taking part in it myself. If you’re looking how to motorbike Vietnam, the routes to take, the type of motorbike to take, and top things to do in each location, this video will help!
What’s the first thing anyone would need on a Vietnam motorcycle trip? Motorbikes of course! After touching down in Saigon that's the first to-do item we tackled. While I had long dreamed of making the trip on a proper motorcycle it simply wasn't to be.
The motorbikes that backpackers typically buy are notoriously unreliable. While a few breakdowns might be funny, the group decided to rent so we could maximize the fun part of our trip. We chose to rent more reliable brand new motorbikes from Tigit in Saigon. From a safety and reliability standpoint, Tigit rentals are far better than the Chinese knock off Honda Wins that can be found in backpacker quarters for sale around the city.
Vietnam Motorbike Trip Distance and Prep
The distance that we'll be driving on this Vietnam motorcycle trip is the equivalent of riding from Key West to Chicago. That's over 2,400 kms. We'll be joined for the first two weeks by two travel companions.
Before heading out on the open road the group also does a bit of shopping to prepare for the journey ahead. Vietnamese roads are a bit crazy with all of the motorcycle traffic so helmets and proper clothing are necessary. Allison opts for a helmet, kneepads, and elbow pads because she’s careful. Jaime goes with rolled up sleeves, an unbuckled helmet and flipflops because he is about two steps out of the trailer park.

Daunting motorcycle traffic in Hanoi, Vietnam
Daunting motorcycle traffic in Hanoi, Vietnam. Hanoi is a traffic nightmare. Anyone who has traveled to the Vietnamese capital knows that the seemingly chaotic sea of motorbikes can be quite a challenge, particularly if you try making your way around town on foot. According to official statistics, there were about 4 million motorbikes in all of Vietnam in 1996; today, there are about that many in Hanoi alone. There are currently around 39 million motorbikes nationwide, meaning that if we exclude the very old and the very young, practically every Vietnamese owns a motorbike.

Full Vietnam trip report:
VIETNAM TRAVEL, VIETNAMESE FOOD, HANOI, VIETNAMESE FOOD IN HANOI
VIETNAM TRAVEL, VIETNAMESE FOOD, HANOI CITY, CRAZY TRAFFIC IN VIETNAM, CROSSING BUSY ROAD Vietnam is a Southeast Asian country on the South China Sea known for its beaches, rivers, Buddhist pagodas and bustling cities. Hanoi, the capital, pays homage to the nation’s iconic Communist-era leader, Ho Chi Minh, via a huge marble mausoleum. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) has French colonial landmarks, plus Vietnamese War history museums and the Củ Chi tunnels, used by Viet Cong soldiers. Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (Vietnamese: Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam (About this sound listen)), is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. With an estimated 94.6 million inhabitants as of 2016, it is the world's 14th-most-populous country, and the ninth-most-populous Asian country. Vietnam is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, Thailand across the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, and the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia across the South China Sea to the east and southeast.[d] Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976, with Ho Chi Minh City as a historical city as well.
The northern part of Vietnam was part of Imperial China for over a millennium, from 111 BC to AD 939. An independent Vietnamese state was formed in 939, following a Vietnamese victory in the Battle of Bạch Đằng River. Successive Vietnamese imperial dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonized by the French in the mid-19th century.
Following a Japanese occupation in the 1940s, the Vietnamese fought French rule in the First Indochina War, eventually expelling the French in 1954. Thereafter, Vietnam was divided politically into two rival states, North Vietnam (officially the Democratic Republic of Vietnam), and South Vietnam (officially the Republic of Vietnam). Conflict between the two sides intensified in what is known as the Vietnam War, with heavy intervention by the United States on the side of South Vietnam from 1965 to 1973. The war ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975.
Vietnam was then unified under a Marxist-Leninist government but remained impoverished and politically isolated. In 1986, the government initiated a series of economic and political reforms which began Vietnam's path towards integration into the world economy.[12] By 2000, it had established diplomatic relations with all nations. Since 2000, Vietnam's economic growth rate has been among the highest in the world,[12] and, in 2011, it had the highest Global Growth Generators Index among 11 major economies.[13] Its successful economic reforms resulted in its joining the World Trade Organization in 2007. It is also a member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. Vietnam remains one of the world's four remaining[citation needed] one-party socialist states officially espousing communism.

Don't look left or right when you cross roads in Hanoi city centre.

The Vietnam Ride!
Motorbike trips around southeast Asia are my FAVORITE thing to do. If you are visiting Hanoi or Northern Vietnam, i say this is a MUST DO! Whether its to Mai Chou which is 4-5 hours from Hanoi, or to Sapa to the north, or if its all around N Vietnam or even down to Central or South all the way to Saigon!
Also when you visit Thailand or Cambodia or Lao... I don't care where, DON'T be afraid to go for a ride adventure! This ride was very similar to the Chiang Mai to Pai ride. Mai Chau is like Pai but even smaller. A great place to stop for a night!
Then for a day ride from Mai Chau you can ride up to Hang Kia, the small village we went to and get some cool views along the way. Like this thumbnail pic.
If you do stay in Mai Chau, book a room with our host Chau with Booking.com and search for Lu's Homestay.

Vietnam by Scooters | Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh in 7 Days!
We've wanted to Ride Motorbikes/scooters/Moped all across Vietnam for a quiet long time, so I flew to Hanoi in February 2017, bought a really old Vietnamese scooters (Yamaha Nouvo) and scootered more/less 1800 kilometers in just 7 days.
Hanoi - Ha Nam - Ha Tinh - Hue - Binh Dinh - Dalat - Saigon/Ho Chi Minh
I've regret it halfway though.
Vietnam is really nice country with a friendly people. Scooters/Bikes are literally like millions in Ho Chi Minh City at times.

Hanoi Crazy Traffic | MOTORBIKES OVERLOADED
Motorbikes overloaded is common in Hanoi, Vietnam because the motorbike is the ubiquitous form of transport here, it replaced the bicycle some time back and is now king of the road. The amount of 4 wheeled traffic has tangibly and visibly increased. Yet the humble 50 or 125cc workhorse still remains the transport of choice of the majority of Vietnamese.
These jaw-dropping scenes from the streets of Vietnam will leave even seasoned tourists wondering if there is anything these motorcyclists can’t balance on the back of a rusty old bike or scooter.
There are far more motorbikes on the road than vans or cars in Vietnam. And they are used for anything and everything and that includes transport to market. It’s not uncommon to see a motorbike laden with watermelon, carrots, herbs and just about anything that can be bought at the market.

Hanoi morning traffic,HD
Hanoi morning traffic,HD
Traffic in Vietnam is a combination of the marvelous and the hairy.
something brutally egalitarian about traffic in modern Vietnam. Middle-class Vietnamese who feel the need to assert their status by driving SUVs are condemned to a truly miserable existence. Outside big cities, Vietnamese roads are sometimes bad enough to give car drivers neck injuries. Inside the city, cars are mobbed by bikers and unable to move at more than snails’ pace. At the lights, their occupants are shamelessly gawped at by the circumambient Hondas.
Do a rough, back-of-the-envelope calculation. Ho Chi Minh City, on an average day, when everyone’s in town for work, is a city of 10 million people. Hanoi, on an average working day, is home to 7–8 million. Half the people in both places own motorbikes, meaning that there are between 4–5 million of the things in each place. So the streets end up looking like this some of the time
Hanoi is the New York of rush hour traffic. If you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere. No, seriously. To be honest, I am lost for adjectives that I could use to describe the rush hour traffic in Hanoi. It is chaotic, maddening, noisy, fascinating, hectic, noisy, turbulent,
It is noisy! It is as if everyday from 7 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 6 pm most of the main roads in the city are being hiked up a couple of decibels. But of course! It is rush hour and the roads are mega-loaded with scooters, cars, bicycles, cyclos, buses, and even some three-wheelers, and they honk every two seconds.
