Matador Charters transiting Oregon Inlet, N.C. on an especially rough winter day with big breaking waves on board the 42' Ray Davis Charter boat Matador. There's no turning back as huge seas show us why Oregon Inlet is a very dangerous place to boaters. Capt. Jake Hiles and Capt. Robert Mudgett are professionals. DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!

Crossing the Bridge into Valhalla (Florence, OR)
Prior to visiting my parents in Florence, Oregon for the first time, I used Google Earth with a couple friends to go on a virtual tour. We discovered the amazing bridge on the south end of town. A couple months later, as I journeyed into town, I couldn't resist the playing the Skyrim main theme, since it fit the aesthetic of the bridge so well.
Life on an ocean research cruise
AGU’s Public Information Manager, Nanci Bompey, spent a week aboard the R/V Oceanus with scientists from Oregon State University (OSU) who are studying the role that small rivers play in the productivity of the coastal ocean during the winter. Read Nanci’s posts from the trip on AGU’s GeoSpace blog, and see photos and videos on AGU’s Instagram feed. Also, read a blog post on Eos.org about the cruise and the importance of science communication written by the expedition’s chief scientist, Miguel Goni, a professor at OSU and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Geophysical Research-Biogeosciences.

Ships Ahoy! Lady Washington & Hawaiian Chieftain sailings in Vancouver
Tall ships Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain arrive at the Vancouver Maritime Museum docks at Vanier Park after public sailings on the last day of their visit on Sunday, June 12, 2011. The visit was part of a British Columbia tour, the first since 2008, by Lady Washington, the Official Ship of Washington State, and her companion ship the Hawaiian Chieftain.
The ships were open for walk-on tours on June 9, 10, 11 and 12. Crew members in 18th century costume welcomed visitors and answered questions about the vessels and her voyages.
Sunset Sails were offered on June 9 and 10, when the ships took guests on a three-hour romantic sail that featured demonstrations of tall ship handling, an opportunity for guests to raise a sail or steer a tall ship, and a beautiful British Columbia sunset.
Battle Sails were offered on June 11 and 12, and the ships hosted guests on a three-hour Battle Sail, their most popular excursion. Battle Sails featured booming cannon and close-quarters maneuvers resembling an 18th century naval skirmish.
Adventure Sails were offered on June 12, and the ships boarded passengers for a three-hour, family-oriented Adventure Sail. These excursions offered maritime storytelling, a sea shanty, and a chance for young and old to help pilot a tall ship.
The ships also visited Victoria, Sidney, and the Ships to Shore Festival in Richmond on June 3-7.
Ship profiles:
