Villa Monastero is located in Varenna on Lake Como and its name derives from the original function of the building, from the thirteenth century until 1567 was used as a place of retreat for the Cistercensian nuns of St. Maria Maddalena. In 1569 the monastery was bought by the noble Paul Mornico who transformed it into a private residence, from 1609 to 1645 Leila Mornico, Paul's son, restored his father's house until it becomes a sumptuous villa called Lailana. In 1862 the villa passed to Peter Genazzini, in 1876 to Carolina Maumary Massimo D'Azeglio's sister-in-law, in 1897 to German industrialist Erich Walter Jacob Kees, who restored it again embellished and widened until it reached its current appearance. The last owner of the villa was Marco de Marchi in 1836 he enriched it again bringing his own works, and when he died it began a property of the state through his wife who created an Hydrobiology Institute. In 1977 the institute was incorporated into the National Research Council, which still today owns the villa and the park that surrounds it. The interior of villa Monastero consists of boardrooms that preserve the beautiful furniture, artwork and collections of great value and for this Lombardy Region has recognized the villa as a house museum (open to visitors since 2005).
You can't miss the beautiful botanical garden that grows between the road and the lake and represents an extraordinary example of artificial system of land and furnishing. In particular, look for Gian Battista Comolli's sculpture group, La Clemenza di Tito, which was started in 1823 but remained unfinished because the artist died in 1830. The work, representing the Roman emperor Tito while he bestows his friend Sesto and Vitellia who had conspired against him, was dedicated as a gift from The Emperor Francesco Comolli of Austria who helped the artist, despite his alleged participation in the riots of 1821.

We visited Villa Monastero in Varenna during our holiday at Lake Como in Lombardy, Italy. This video is mostly about the botanical gardens with a small peek inside the villa at the end.
Villa Monastero is a villa in 17th Century style with 2km of gardens and 14 or so Renaissance rooms to visit, all for the princely sum of about €8 per person (or €5 if you only want to visit the gardens). The views of Lake Como are obviously fabulous, as you will see...

Villa Monastero, in Varenna on the shore of Lake Como, represents on of the most interesting eclectic style residences in which the interventions carried out upon it have added functional and decorative elements without destroying the traces of the building's vicissitudes, thereby obtaining a villa with a garden of great scenic impact.
Villa Monastero was actually born from the continual restoration of the ancient Cistercian woman's St, Maria monastery from around 1208. It is probable that its foundation is to be placed in relation to the religious settlements of the opposite shore: with the St. Faustino and St Giovita monastery on Comacina Island, from which came the refugees of 1169.
The monastery buildings remained the property of the Mornico family from 1569 to 1862, and during these three centuries the functional restructures many were. From the 2 nd half of the 19 th century, villa Monastero began to undergo a series of transformations - the work of successive owners (Genazzini, Maumary Seufferheld, Kees, and De Marchi).
Particularly interesting is the stairway, realized in multicoloured marble , ceramics and plasters; even the bath called pompeiano (Pompeian) or King Faruk's, is a singular document of this taste. In 1918 the property was confiscated and given to the Opera Nazionale Combattenti; was then sold to Dr. Marco De Marchi, who then donated it as the lstituto Italiano di Idrobiologia Marco De Marchi.

Villa Monastero was originally a Cistercian convent dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen founded before 1200 AD.
It was then purchased by a noble family in 1567, who developed the magnificent botanical gardens made up of over 1000 species including citrus, cypresses, pine trees and agaves. It stretches over more than a kilometre along the shores of Lake Como and features ancient statues and bas-reliefs.

Villa Monastero è una villa situata a Varenna in Provincia di Lecco e posta sulle rive del Lago di Como. La villa ospita un giardino botanico, una casa museo ed è centro convegni.
Tra i convegni organizzati a Villa Monastero vi è la Scuola Internazionale di Fisica Enrico Fermi, organizzata dalla Società Italiana di Fisica dal 1953. La scuola ha ospitato interventi di oltre trentaquattro premi Nobel.

Among the conferences organized at Villa Monastero there is the International Physics School Enrico Fermi, organized by the Italian Society of Physics since 1953. The school has hosted more than thirty-four Nobel prizes.

Proseguono le aperture straordinarie della Casa Museo e dei Giardini di Villa Monastero a Varenna volute dalla Provincia di Lecco per offrire un'opportunità in più ai visitatori.
Venerdì 1, sabato 2 e domenica 3 novembre la Casa Museo e i Giardini di Villa Monastero saranno aperti dalle 9 alle 18.
Nelle altre domeniche di novembre (10, 17, 24) e nelle prime tre domeniche di dicembre (1, 8, 15) la Casa Museo e i Giardini di Villa Monastero saranno aperti dalle 10.00 alle 16.00, in collaborazione con la Cooperativa Larius, che gestisce il servizio, e senza costi aggiuntivi per la Provincia di Lecco.
In queste domeniche di novembre e dicembre nelle sale della Casa Museo sarà possibile visitare la mostra documentaria dedicata a Marco De Marchi (che lasciò Villa Monastero per il pubblico utilizzo), realizzata in occasione del 75° anniversario di fondazione dell'Istituto di Idrobiologia a lui dedicato dalla moglie Rosa Curioni De Marchi, che illustra le ricche collezioni di gioielli, argenterie, francobolli e documenti vari relativi a Villa Monastero. Saranno inoltre esposti per la prima volta alcuni abiti indossati da Rosa Curioni De Marchi in varie occasioni, in particolare il ricco abito da sera che era solita portare per recarsi al Teatro alla Scala di Milano, insieme a quelli appartenuti alle cugine Rachele Molinelli Romagnoli e Vittoria Mari Piazzi, conservati da Virginia Piazzi Cavalazzi e donati dai nipoti Ruberl Cavalazzi, come l'abito da cavallerizza e quello in pizzo decorato con campanule e iris risalenti alla fine dell'800.
Nelle tre domeniche di dicembre sarà possibile ammirare anche il presepe allestito nella Sala Fermi.
I visitatori potranno scegliere di visitare solo il Giardino Botanico (ingresso 5 euro) oppure sia il Giardino Botanico che la Casa Museo (ingresso 8 euro); sono previste riduzioni per anziani over 65, studenti dai 14 ai 24 anni, bambini dai 7 ai 13 anni, gruppi di più di 10 persone, soci Touring, e la gratuità per bambini da 0 a 6 anni, disabili, tesserati ICOM, residenti a Varenna.

Villa Monastero Varenna es el Lago de Como y su nombre deriva de la función original del edificio desde el siglo XIII hasta 1567 fue utilizado como lugar de retiro para las monjas cistercienses de San María Magdalena.
En 1569 el monasterio fue comprado por la noble Mornico Pablo, quien se convirtió en una residencia privada, desde 1609 hasta 1645 Leila Mornico, hijo de Pablo, restaurado la casa de su padre hasta que se convierte en una suntuosa villa llamada Lailana.
En 1862 la Villa pasó a Pedro Genazzini en 1876 en Carolina del Maumary hermana de Massimo D'Azeglio, en 1897 el empresario alemán Erich Walter Jacob Kees, quien lo restauró de nuevo embellecido y ampliado hasta alcanzar su aspecto actual.
El último propietario de la villa fue Marco de Marchi en 1836 que trajo aún más enriquecido sus propias obras, y que su muerte estaba vinculada a la propiedad a través de su esposa, que creó un Instituto de Hidrobiología.
En 1977 el instituto se incorporó al Consejo Nacional de Investigación, que todavía posee la villa y el parque que lo rodea.
Villa Monasterio se hace desde dentro de las salas de juntas que conservan muebles finos, obras de arte y colecciones de gran valor que han causado la región de Lombardía ha aprobado la villa como casa-museo (abierto al público desde 2005).
No se pierda el hermoso jardín botánico que crece entre la carretera y el lago, es un ejemplo sobresaliente de un sistema artificial de la tierra y el mobiliario.
En particular, busque el grupo de esculturas de Gian Battista Comolli, La Clemenza di Tito, que se inició en 1823 pero quedó sin terminar porque el artista de la muerte en 1830.
La obra, que representa al emperador romano Tito y le otorga su amigo Sesto y Vitelia que habían conspirado contra él, se dedicó como un regalo de Francesca Comolli El emperador de Austria, que ayudó al artista a pesar de su presunta participación en los disturbios de 1821.
