The Old Jewish Cemetery of Vilna
Jewish historical sites in modern day Vilnius (Hebrew: Vilna), the capital of Lithuania, are an endangered species. This video examines the history – and the plight – of Vilna’s Old Jewish Cemetery, affectionately called “Piramont” and “Der Alter Beys Eylem” by Vilna’s pre-World War II Jewish community. The video features an appeal to the Lithuanian government by Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations.

VILNIUS:Can some London Rabbis License Lithuanian Gov. to Desecrate Old Vilna Jewish Cemetery?
The greatest rabbis in the world, including the rashei-yeshiva of the most famous yeshivas, along with the chief rabbi of Israel and the on-site rabbis in Vilnius, Lithuania, have all pleaded with the Lithuanian government to move its national convention center project AWAY from the old Jewish cemetery and to allow the cemetery, where the Chayei-Adam, the B'eir Hagola and Reb Zelmele Volozhiner still lie buried, to be lovingly restored. It would bring blessings and countless visitors to Vilnius and Lithuania for generations. Tragically, a controversial group in London, allegedly exposed by Wikileaks for taking payments for their permissions is being used by government in Eastern Europe (where because of the Holocaust there isn't really a critical mass of descendants to stand up for their ancestors' duly purchased graves) as en excuse to defile more and more cemeteries. For more please see:

Lithuania - Jewish Graves Desecrated
Lithuanian authorities have launched an investigation into the
desecration of more than 60 graves at the largest Jewish cemetery
in central Kaunas, Lithuania's second largest city about 90
kilometres from Vilnius. The desecration occurred Saturday morning
(13/8) when a group of drunken youths entered the cemetery and
crashed gravestones, crypts and fences. The violence is believed
to have continued for nearly two hours even though police were
informed about the attack as it was taking place. Lithuania has
the largest Jewish community in the Baltic states and has
historically been known for its tradition of religious tolerance,
although since Lithuania declared independence in 1990, many Jews
have been refused citizenship allegedly because of their Russian
origin.

Vilna Jewish Cemetery by J-nerations
A powerhouse, made of gravestones from the Jewish cemetery was built in Vilnius.
A resident of Vilnius, Giedrius of Sakalauskas found an electric substation, lined with tombstones from the Jewish cemetery in a green area near the centre of the capital. He noticed the inscription in Hebrew and Yiddish on the granite stones, which were used to build the station in the 60-ies of the last century. There was a Jewish cemetery across the street, that was destroyed after the Second world war, when Lithuania became part of the Soviet Union. This is not the first time the Jewish grave stones were used for construction in Lithuania. The steps leading to one of the highest points of Vilnius, hill Tauro, are also made of tombstones from the Jewish cemetery. Gravestone stacked the steps leading to the reformed Evangelical Church, which was turned into the theatre by the Communists in Soviet times.
Jewish tombstones in Vilnius will be brought back to the cemetery

Sebastian explains to us about a new and upcoming 'arty'' area of Vilnius, Lithuania.
We met Sebastian at The Jewish History Museum/ Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum (Green House Section).. He was fascinating to speak with...a fountain of information and tremendously knowledgeable about the Jewish history of Vilnius. He is in the middle of a one year Internship at the museum during his 'gap' year. He is doing this internship as a community service alternative to military service in his home country of Austria.
We met up with him again that evening to share dinner together and in this video he explains the background of the new and upcoming neighborhood where we are about to explore and enjoy dinner. His English was extraordinarily fluent and considering that English is his 3rd language and that he is only 18 years old it is all the more impressive~ Truly an extraordinary young man!
