Dreamt of going here for ages, now I have. Went off-season but still great. Go by bus from Huelva to Almonte and from there to El Rocio. Be careful there are few buses and there seems to be continious changes of schedule without informing. I spent 4 hours waiting to go back with the lovely couple in the last image. I finally had to take a taxi to get back to my last bus leaving from Huelva to El Portillo where I staid .

It is so exceptional, there are no real streets, only sand, I expected Clint Eastwood to appear all the time .This little village is full of wonderful friendly people just wanting you to visit I will soon again !!
The El Rocío pilgrimage is the most famous in the region, attracting nearly a million people from across Andalucia and the entire country, and beyond. Every Andalucian city, town and village has its own pilgrimages, for its patron saint, virgin or other much-loved local figure. But the El Rocio has cult status, and is the most important and most colourful. It follows on from Semana Santa (March/April), and the various spring ferias, of which Seville's Feria de Abril (April) is the biggest.
HISTORY OF EL ROCIO
This cult dates back to the 13th century, when a hunter from the village of Villamanrique (or Almonte, depending on which version of the story you follow) discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary in a tree trunk in the Doñana park. A chapel was built where the tree stood, and it became a place of pilgrimage. Devotion to this particular version of the Virgin was initially a local affair. Then, by the 17th century, hermandades (brotherhoods) were making the trip from nearby towns at Pentecost; by the 19th century, they came from all over Huelva, Cadiz and Seville, on a journey taking up to four days. Over the next century, the cult of the Virgin del Rocio became more and more widespread, and these days participants come from as far away as Barcelona and the Canary Islands - not to mention tourists who travel from abroad, around Europe and even further afield.
The object of the pilgrimage is a 13th-century statue of the Virgen Del Rocio (Virgin of the Dew), in the town of the same name. El Rocio is in Huelva province, in the heart of the Doñana park, between Almonte and the coast. Most pilgrims, known as rocieros, approach the town through the park itself.
The town of El Rocío is a sprawling, pretty Wild-West-style place (you tie your horse to a wooden rail with a sign saying Reservado Caballos - reserved for horses - while you have a drink or a meal), with sandy, unpaved roads (easier on the hooves). For a few days in late May or early June, Catholic hermandades (brotherhoods) and countless others flock from all over Andalucia, Spain, and beyond, to the town, to pay tribute to the Virgin del Roció, housed in her own church in the town.
Until the 1950s the town had only a few houses, and everyone camped in their wagons. Now, each of the 90 or so brotherhoods has its own house with stables, as well as its own chapel, with its name displayed at the front. Its members and their friends and families, and their horses, eat and sleep here during the pilgrimage weekend. People bring mattresses and bed down anywhere they can. There are impromptu parties, open-air masses, horse races and competitions between the hermandades. And lots of singing and dancing, at all hours of the day and night. These brotherhoods also stay at their houses at weekends throughout the year, with their families in tow, making each visit into a big fiesta.
The pilgrimage takes place over the weekend before Pentecost Monday, the seventh weekend after Easter (see box, right, for dates). People start arriving on the Friday before, and leave again on Tuesday. Beware of heavy traffic going to El Rocio (on the Seville-Huelva motorway, and the minor roads in the area) the week before, and leaving again the week after. The actual pilgrims don't travel on the motorway itself, but follow a route which sometimes goes alongside it - the queue of horses and wagons, surrounded by clouds of dust snakes back for miles.

On the night after Pentecost, the Hermandad Matriz leads an all-night procession of Our Lady of El Rocío through the town and to visits the houses of their filial brotherhoods. By midnight, the sanctuary is at capacity, as young men jockey for position to carry the Virgin's palio. The procession, which brings a million visitors to El Rocío, is raucous and frenzied.

El Rocio is in Andalusia in the deep south of Spain. The many pilgrims who flock to the little town every year come to venerate the Holy Virgin of El Rocio, also know as the Virgin of the Dew.
In the 15th century a hunter who lived near Almonte, discovered a statuette of Mary hidden in the trunk of a tree. He took it with him but was overcome with fatigue on his way home.
When he awoke the statuette had disappeared. The hunter returned to the tree where he found the figurine again. In that place, called Rocina, a little church was built, and thus began the veneration of the Virgin of the Dew.

You find the village of El Rocío in the municipality of Almonte, in the province of Huelva and it is located 15km from the beach of Matalascañas and next to Doñana National Park. The village consists of whitewashed houses and sandy streets, with shops and cafes and restaurants. The center of the village is the chapel, dedicated for centuries to Our Lady of El Rocío, one of the most venerated images of Virgen Mary in Spain. El Rocío is surrounded by nature that belongs to Doñana National Park and the means of transportation within the village are horses and horse carriages that you can hire to go for a ride in the surroundings. This is an ideal place to spend the afternoon, to watch the sunset or even for lunch. You should try the fried fish in any of its restaurants. Annually there is a pilgrimage in springtime of organized brotherhoods, who arrive on foot, horseback or in chariots pulled by tractors. The pilgrimage gathers almost one million people from all over Spain. This colorful event with music and songs devoted to the virgin of El Rocío is a performance that lasts a whole weekend, until the night of Monday of Pentecost. That night is the climax of this religious event, when the believers jump over the fence and carry the parade float of Virgin Mary in procession through the streets of the village.

For the people of Andalusia there will always be an El Rocio. The day after Pentecost the Rocieros are already making preparations for the following year. For them El Rocio is more than just a pilgrimage. It is a way of life.

The pilgrimage dates from 1653, when the Virgin of Las Rocinas was appointed patron saint of Almonte. Originally it took place on 8 September. Since 1758, the Virgin has been known as the Virgin of El Rocío, and the pilgrimage has taken place on the second day of Pentecost.[1] Covered by Peter Laarakker and music from Hans Martin both from the Netherlands with a heart for Spain.

Dit jaar El Rocio, een plaatsje bij Sevilla (Andalusië Spanje) waar jaarlijks “met Pinksteren de “Romeria del Rocio” gehouden wordt. Het anders verlate dorp dat 25 km van Sevilla ligt wordt overspoeld door tienduizenden bedevaarders die allemaal in de ban zijn van de plaatselijke madonna: de Virgen del Rocio. Vanuit heel Spanje trekken zogenaamde hermandades (broederschappen) te voet, te paard tractor SUV of met een huifkar ook naar El Rocio. Veel broederschappen trekken dwars doorheen het schitterende en beschermde natuurgebied El Parque de Doñana. De zaterdag voor Pinksteren arriveren de pelgrimages en presenteren zich met hun Virgin getrokken door muilezels of ossen bij de kerk, waarna de pastoor de zegen uitspreekt.
De zondag van pinsteren is het overdag net of je in een western rondloopt. Paarden koetsen en mooi geklede mensen paraderen door de zandstraten van het dorp. In de huizen van de broederschappen wordt gefeest, gegeten en gedronken, natuurlijk ontbreekt de muziek en flamenco dans niet. Ondertussen wordt de gehele kerk ontruimd incl. kerkbanken en biechtstoelen.
Precies om 0.00 begint de processie, waarbij de broederschappen met hun vaandels wederom langs de kerk trekken. Zo gauw het laatste broederschap langs de ingang van de kerk getrokken is, (dit jaar 3.06 uur) is het de beurt aan de jongemannen om de maagd de kerk uit te dragen en deze te laten “drijven” door het dorp. Dinsdags trekken de pelgrimages weer richting hun thuisstad.

Este año El Rocío, un pequeño pueblo cerca de Sevilla (Andalucía, España) donde el anual Pentecostés Romería del Rocío. El otro tardío pueblo 25 km de Sevilla está siendo invadido por decenas de miles de peregrinos que están bajo el hechizo de la Virgen local: la Virgen del rocío. Señalar supuesto hermandades de toda España a pie, a caballo o tractor SUV con un carro cubierto también El Rocío. Muchas hermandades llamar justo a través de ella el área hermoso y protegido, El Parque de Doñana. El sábado antes de Pentecostés las peregrinaciones y se presentan con su Virgen tirado por mulas o bueyes en la iglesia, después de que el sacerdote pronuncia la bendición.
Pentecostés el domingo será como si usted camina alrededor en un western. Caballos y gente vestida agradable desfilando por las calles de arena de la aldea. En las casas de las fraternidades es de fiesta, comer y beber, por supuesto, falta el baile flamenco y la música. Mientras tanto toda la iglesia borra confesionarios y bancas incl. La procesión comienza a las 0.00, exactamente donde las cofradías con sus estandartes otra vez a lo largo de la iglesia. Tan pronto como se dibuja la última fraternidad a lo largo de la entrada a la iglesia, (este año 3,06 horas), es el turno de los jóvenes a la Virgen de la iglesia y tener que flotan a través de la aldea. El martes retroceder las peregrinaciones a su ciudad natal. Las imágenes que he hecho son procesadas en una serie de diapositivas y Hans Martin, el uno que compré hace 35 años mis rollos de película ed., la guitarra flamenca jugaron como música de fondo, para que mi agradecimiento.

Almonte is a town and municipality located in the province of Huelva, Spain. The village of El Rocío, an important pilgrimage point, is located within the municipality of Almonte .
The name of Almonte and Doñana are projected to Spain thanks to the hermitage of El Rocío at the end of the XIX. Pilgrimage of El Rocío : It is the popular festival of Almonte in which millions of pilgrims gather together with the same thought, in order to meet the White Dove, which is in the hermitage of El Rocío. The pilgrimage lasts a week for the inhabitants of Almonte, having two days of greater splendor: on Wednesday, the day in which the people of Almonte make the way from the town to the village and on Sunday morning, night in which the Patrona makes a tour through the sandy streets of the village rociera, carried on shoulders by the citizens of Almonte. It is a moment expected throughout the year by the brothers of the Virgin of the Dew.
La Feria : The fair of Almonte is collected in the municipal area of Chaparral, the fair begins at the beginning of the summer having its day of greater splendor on Saturday. This party is in honor of the patron saint of Almonte, San Pedro whose day is the 29 of June . The last day of fair that always falls on Monday, is a local festival and a bullfight is held, in the cattle site. On June 26 the mares arrive from Almonte from El Rocío , the well known Saca de las Yeguas , which has been held for more than 510 years.
The Coming of the Virgin: Event that occurs every seven years, which consists of the transfer of the virgin from her hermitage (in the village of El Rocío), to the town of Almonte. Here it will take 9 months, until, again, the Almonteños take it to El Rocío, its true place of origin as the legends tell. During her stay in Almonte, the virgin will lead a tour of the streets of that town, which will be adorned for the occasion with arches and white flowers. These ornaments (that envelop the streets for which the virgin will pass), make them and place the own Almonteños a year before the virgin comes. This preparation of the town to receive the patron saint is a tradition that thanks to which has been passed from generation to generation, continues giving of altruistic form and by pure devotion.

El Rocío is een bedevaartplaats in Andalusië, Spanje. Het stadje heeft alleen zandstraten en wordt rondom Pinksteren gedomineerd door koetsen, paarden beierende klokken, vuurwerk, prachtige kostuums en stof. Veel stof. Hermandades ( broederschappen) uit diverse Spaanse steden hebben hier een eigen onderkomen en presenteren hun praalwagens met hun heilige maagd. ( Virgin). In de prachtige witte kerk staat de Virgin. In de nacht van 1e naar 2e pinksterdag wordt zij uit de kerk gedragen. Dit jaar was dat om ruim 4 uur 's ochtends. De hele nacht hebben de klokken geluid.
