Richmond Civil War Sampler Tour
Richmond, Virginia, was at the heart of the Civil War, the most defining event in the history of the United States of America.
As the industrial center and political capital of the Confederacy, Richmond became the prize over which two mighty American Armies contended in bloody battle from 1861 to 1865. Cannon boomed within earshot of the city. Its residents saw their loves transformed. Wartime Richmond, swollen by government, military, refugees, prisoners, and the wounded, lived with anxiety and hope. Landowners outside the city saw their farms converted into battlefields. Previously unknown placenames like Cold Harbor, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hills, and New Market Heights attained national sognificance for the key battles that were fought there.

We made it to Virginia!
Go Visit the Civil War Museum in Virginia:
---------------
When we took a vacation in Virginia, the first place we went to was the Civil War Museum to teach the boys some history, located in New Market. The tickets were good for seven days. We went there when we arrived to the state, and then again the following morning to finish up. I think the boys learned a lot from the experience.
When we teach history, it is through an Anabaptist perspective (we are peacemakers). It is really important to us to show both sides to the story as well as a third side. The Mennonites, Amish, and Brethren of that time were the third side. They were the ones who were against being a part of the war or the oppression behind the war. People tend to think peacemakers sit back and do nothing, but that is so untrue about Anabaptists. We do what we can to show love to all people, including our enemies. Therefore, we, who live in the Union side (Yankees) and traveled to the Confederate side (Rebels) to this museum in a state that is known to be in the middle (where people fought for both sides and had splits – I mean that’s why we have a West Virginia), and stand against war as Anabaptists, it made for really great conversation and situations to learn about. I’d say that we took the “Christian” stance, but the majority who fought in this war believed in the Bible and God and claimed to be Christians, which is why I will often state I am an Anabaptist Mennonite. It separates a big difference of opinions and convictions.
This place was beautiful, no doubt. It is sad to think of all the bloodshed that took place here. They even had a place called the “field of lost shoes.” There was a lot to look at there, from a beautiful view off the mountain, an informational walk-through museum, to an old farm that was used as a hospital when taken over by the military.
Thanks for watching.

Re-enactment of The Battle Of New Market, Virginia
In the spring of 1864, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant set in motion a grand strategy designed to press the Confederacy into submission. My primary mission, reasoned Grant, is to ... bring pressure to bear on the Confederacy so no longer could it take advantage of interior lines. Control of the strategically important and agriculturally rich Shenandoah Valley was a key element in General Grant's plans. While he confronted General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in the eastern part of the state, Grant ordered Major General Franz Sigel's army of 10,000 to secure the Valley and threaten Lee's flank, starting the Valley Campaigns of 1864.

Virginia's American Civil War Battlefields
Most of the battles in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War took place in Virginia because the Confederacy had to defend its national capital at Richmond, and public opinion in the North demanded that the Union move On to Richmond! The successes of Robert E. Lee in defending Richmond is a central theme of the military history of the war. The White House of the Confederacy, located a few blocks north of the State Capitol, was home to the family of Confederate leader Jefferson Davis.
