Lava flow in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Near the 'sea arch' in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Big Island, the road was destroyed by lava few years ago. Currently the terrain is quite other worldly with its rough rocky landscape. We walked for 5 hours on highly unstructured terrain formed by solidified lava - in a drizzling afternoon. And finally we reached the spot at dusk, where molten lava was flowing down the slope to gradually fall into the Pacific Ocean. We headed back walking another 4 hours - sometimes in moonlight, sometimes using our flashlights whenever the clouds created shadow. 'Pele' - the Hawaiian Goddess of volcanoes showed us her wrath and might in that moonlit night!

Rivers of molten lava high up Pulama Pali - Kilauea Volcano Hawaii
A surge of lava spews out of a rupture in the lava tube system and is heading down steep cliffs, or pali in Hawaiian. This strong flow is being supplied lava from Kilauea Volcano's Pu`u O`o Crater four miles to the northwest. The rupture was at the 1600-foot elevation about four miles northwest of Kalapana Gardens, and directly above the old Royal Gardens subdivision.
Further down the mountain I shot the rough a`a lava and chunky pahoehoe lava river, and at the 800-ft elevation I videoed the lava 'toes'.

Today in the US it is Thanksgiving day, to all of you celebrating - Happy Thanksgiving! Ed and I are thankful today for our life together and the traveling that we have done together. For today's video, we take you back to our wedding and honeymoon trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. On this day, we ventured to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see Kīlauea and Pele in all her glory. This was prior to the 2018 eruption and lava flow, so we were able to access the crater, the Jaggar Museum and the Thurston Lava Tube. Thanks for joining us! We are Jason and Ed, and we are The Traveling Husbands! We are huge Disney fans and recently relocated to Florida. We have been to Disneyland multiple times while living in Arizona. In 2017, we got to spend a week at the Tokyo Disney Resort for our honeymoon. We are also DVC members and own at Aulani. And that’s only partly because we got married in Hawaii!
In addition to Disney trips, we have spent extended time in Europe including Paris, a small village in Southwest Germany, London, Zurich, Alsace, and Barcelona. We both grew up in the Northeast and took many family trips throughout New England, the Mid-Atlantic states, and up to Canada. Together, we recently lived in Phoenix, Arizona, which gave us opportunities to explore the west coast.
Recently, we have entered a new, and different adventure - living with brain cancer, and caring for a spouse undergoing cancer treatment. We are pleased to share all of the journeys that come our way in this crazy life!
