Volterra, in Tuscany, Italy is one of the most attractive of all the Tuscan walled towns. It's amazingly preserved. The town is about a thousand years old and the buildings we see today easily date back to the Middle Ages and the earliest foundations of Volterra go back to the Etruscan days, nearly 3000 years ago. This movie features local Tuscan guide, Annie Adair, who will take us on an extended walking tour through Volterra. Annie explains about the history, architecture, culture and daily life in the city today. She conducts regular tours in Volterra and Tuscany, and can be found at her website, for more information.

Volterra, Tuscany Introduction
Volterra is one of the oldest and most charming towns in Tuscany, Italy, with a large pedestrian zone surrounded by the medieval stone wall. Many of the buildings are more than 500 years old, yet shops and restaurants are quite modern.
What to see in Volterra | Italy
Volterra is in the Tuscany region of Italy. Its history dates from before the 8th century BC and it has substantial structures from the Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval periods. The town was a Bronze Age settlement and an important Etruscan center. Later Volterra became a place of interest of the Republic of Florence, whose forces conquered it. When the Republic of Florence fell in 1530, the city came under the control of the Medici family and later followed the history of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

For visitors wanting to take a walk back through the art and sculpture of Tuscany and Italy as well as get a glimpse of changing styles in church architecture then there is no better place than the lavish interior of the San Giovanni Cathedral. The cathedral or Duomo can be found on the Piazza San Giovanni, a charmingly peaceful little square in the center of town. For centuries, the cathedral has been the town's main place of worship with a honey-colored but rather austere exterior that belies the richness of the colors and architecture to be discovered inside. Among its sumptuous interior visitors can travel through several centuries of work by revered Tuscan artists and sculptors and search out little quirks hidden within the building and paintings that depict local life and families.
Look out for the hermit's tomb. This unfortunate local personality was sacrificed in gratitude when an epidemic of plague left the town. Visitors enter the cathedral through its baptistry where a stone font can be seen. This is a common factor in many Catholic churches, because symbolically, of course, worshippers were unable to take their place in the rituals of the mother church without being baptized.
The origins of the site as a pagan place of worship have been lost back in the mists of time but the original Christian church here was known to be dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The present cathedral underwent major changes and was rededicated to the Assumption of Mary in the early XII century. The Cathedral's Romanesque facade dominates one side of the Piazza San Giovanni and is finished with an impressive entrance added in the XII century and worked in an attractive intarsia of different shaded marbles, thought to be the work of Nicola Pisano.
Once eyes have adjusted to the interior from the bright sunshine of the square it can be seen that the cathedral is laid out in the traditional pattern of the Romanesque Latin cross along with two side aisles flanking the central nave. This original layout is still clearly visible despite the cathedral being totally modified under the auspices of Bishop Serguidi in the late XVI century. This remodeling enthusiastically followed reforms laid down by the Council of Trent, a counter-reformation movement aimed at strengthening the Catholic church against the growing popularity of Protestantism in Europe. During the remodeling, the columns that divide the nave from the aisles were richly decorated in stucco worked by Gianpaolo Rossetti with their capitals embellished by Leonardo Ricciarelli. A sculptured frieze in Montecatini stone was left in place from an earlier period to provide a framework for the cathedral's six main altars. During this period graciously arched Romanesque windows were replaced by more severe rectangular windows befitting a serious reformation.

The Guarnacci Etruscan Museum is located in via Don Minzoni in Volterra , and contains one of the most beautiful collections of Etruscan art. In 1776 the canon of the cathedral of Volterra Pietro Franceschini found near the Etruscan necropolis of the Portone a hypogeum of considerable size dating back to the Hellenistic period, containing forty Etruscan urns, which in 1777 donated to the town of Volterra . This donation was the first nucleus of the Civic Museum which soon collected many other works found in the surroundings of Volterra and which until then had been kept in private collections of noblemen from Volterra.
Among the various donations, the most important and most important was that of Monsignor Mario Guarnacci ( 1701 - 1785 ), a wealthy priest who promoted numerous archaeological excavation campaigns, which on 15 September 1761 donated his entire collection to the newborn museum. He was named after the museum that in over two centuries of history has increased its heritage thanks to numerous excavation campaigns promoted by the Superintendency of Antiquities of Etruria. The first seat of the museum was Palazzo Ruggeri, home of Guarnacci, later it was transferred first to some halls of the town hall and then from 1877 in the Desideri-Tangassi palace, the current headquarters.
The first Prefect and Librarian of the Guarnacci Museum is the Roman abbot Francesco Ballani , well-known librettist of his time, who was succeeded by Giuseppe Cailli in 1805 until his death in 1810 . Francesco Inghirami ( 1772 - 1846 ) occupied this position from 1810 until 1815. The museum displays the largest collection of Etruscan urns in the world. Moreover, among the most interesting preserved works we find:

The Etruscan collection, complemented by numerous artefacts from both the Villanovan and Roman periods, is spread over three floors of the building and consists of 38 rooms connected in an educational path that allows you to follow the most important stages in the history of the ancient Velathri .

Volterra is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. It is used as the 3000 year old residence of the largest vampire family in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books. Volterra is situated in the province of Pisa. My Brother & I decided to take a simple road test (car break-in! hehe!) plus our Parents decided also to join us. It's a simple and beautiful place. its like we travelled back in time. So If you guys are planning to travel here in Tuscany, don't forget to add this place to your travel list and visit the handicraft workshops, where you'll find many ideas for souvenirs from Tuscany, especially ALABASTER HANDMADE OBJECTS which Volterra is famous worldwide for.
