West Rim Trail at Zion National Park: Top-Down from Lava Point to Angel's Landing / Zion Canyon
A hike (~18 miles) along the West Rim Trail in Zion National Park.
Sources indicating official length of the trail vary. The hike depicted involved the hike up Angel's Landing and other extensive sightseeing along the trail, as well as an unintentional detour. Our estimate may be high, however we feel that due to the relative difficulty of the trail, it is preferable to overestimate the length, perhaps helping others heed additional caution.
Inexperienced hikers are strongly advised to hike the West Rim Trail as a two-day backpacking trip, which includes camping at a marked site and filtering one's own water. To fully experience the trail in one day, we suggest one get started early in the morning and be prepared for 10-12 hours of strenuous hiking.
To reach the trailhead from Springdale drive west to the town of Virgin, then turn north on Kolob Terrace Road. Drive 19 miles and turn at sign indicating Lava Point. At the next junction, turn left to reach the West Rim Trail Head. Be aware of poor road conditions, and also make plans to either be dropped off at the trail, or to be returned to your vehicle later, as this is not a round-trip hike.
Note: This video depicts only a tiny fraction of the vast wilderness of Zion National Park. Plan ahead to avoid dehydration, exhaustion, inclement weather, and dangerous falls. Getting lost will obviously exacerbate all the above risks.

This time I went on the road with my family to discover the west of the USA. Within two weeks I tried to put as many national parks on the route as possible :D. Whenever possible I would get some shots with my A7s or DJI Phantom 3 Pro, however, when traveling with friends I usually get a lot more time to film. After all, it was an amazing road trip, we had perfect weather all the way and saw so many amazing places. One drawback was that I wasn't allowed to film with my drone in most of the national parks, so I would get outside of the park borders to get some shots..

Climb Up Angels Landing Trail - Zion National Park in Utah
Angels Landing - Zion National Park - is a 1,488-foot (454 m) tall rock formation in Zion National Park in southwestern Utah in the United States. A trail cut into solid rock in 1926 leads to the top of Angels Landing and provides views of Zion Canyon.
The trail to Angels Landing is 2.4 miles (3.9 km) long with an approximate 1,500 feet (460 m) elevation gain. Great hiking! The hike is rated as a class 3 difficulty based on the Yosemite Decimal System[2]. It begins at the Grotto drop off point on the park's shuttle system, which operates from early spring through late fall.[3] It roughly follows the path of the Virgin River for some time along the West Rim Trail, slowly gaining elevation in sandy terrain. As the trail gets steeper and leaves behind the river, it becomes paved.

The Angels Landing hike is considered amongst the scariest and most rewarding hikes in North America, offering panoramic and stunning views of the canyon. The hike starts from the Grotto Trailhead in Zion National Park and follows the West Rim Trail. The summit of Angels Landing is around 1500 feet above the canyon floor.
This video was shot when I hiked up to Angels Landing on March 22, 2019. I had hiked up to the summit a couple of times in February, in the presence of ice and snow on the trail - was pretty scary as it was hard to get a foothold due to all the ice. An extended video of my visit to the Zion National Park, Utah, United States.
I was really looking forward to seeing Zion NP and started filming miles short of the canyon itself. The Park set up is such that car parking is an issue so I parked several miles short of the entrance in Springdale to save the risk of hitting the Visitor Center and finding it full (in the summer no cars can enter the Scenic Drive which is the best part).
The Park provides a shuttle bus from Springdale and it worked out well for me so I can recommend it as an option (when I got to the Visitor Center the car park looked full but I didn't notice cars waiting).
The Park is simply stunning. I didn't have time to head much away from the main sites but there are quite a few hikes in the park and even walking a short distance away from one gives a whole new perspective on the park. The area around Zion Lodge is well worth a wander and the view from Weeping Rock is amazing (although time of day makes a big difference when you need the sun to be in the right spot to make the view extra special).
I ran out of time to drive the Zion-Mt Carmel highway so I plan to revisit and spend a bit more time exploring the park.
Canyoneering near Zion National Park, Utah
Our first time canyoneering ever - what an amazing experience. Our guide, Bailey Schofield of Zion Adventure Company in Springfield, let us make all the decisions so it was truly an exploratory and deep learning experience for us. I believe she rated this canyon as 3B2 - which is (3) Intermediate (ropes needed for rapelling/belaying), (B) wet (still pools, swimming expected), and (2) about a half-day required.

Bryce Canyon National Park - Sunrise to Sunset Point hike through Hoodoos
The Navajo Loop Trail descends from Sunset Point through the slot canyon of Wall Street, where 500 to 700-year-old Douglas Firs reach upward toward the sunlight at the top of the canyon. The Navajo Loop is the most popular trail in the park, and is often combined with the Queen's Garden Trail to form a longer loop that passes through the Queen's Garden and emerges onto the rim at Sunrise Point. From here two very scenic and easy strolls can be taken as part of the Rim Trail. A ½-mile walk to the north on a wheelchair accessible trail which takes you to Sunset Point. Walking ¾ of a mile to the south across gently rolling terrain, you arrive at Inspiration Point.

Zion National Park - Parunuweap South Rim Hike
This video highlights the hike I made along the southern rim of Parunuweap Canyon in Zion National Park in May, 2013. The destination of the hike was two, large sandstone cliffs that are split by a deep crevice about 400-450 feet deep. These outcrops are visible directly south of Checkerboard Pass on the way to the canyon.
This area is little-visited because of its remoteness (only accessible either by long hikes via Checkerboard Pass to the Barracks and then up through French Canyon, or by 4WD on 12 miles of sandy trails from the south via Coral Pink Sands road), However, it has a character that I've not seen in other parts of Zion, including the area north of the canyon (ex. Poverty Flats).
I only had time to hike along the spine of the eastern rock before being turned back by a freak rain storm (very windy light rain blown in by storm fronts). However, I do plan to return next year and hope to find fellow hikers to help explore more of it.

5 days of Hiking, Camping & Backpacking in Southern Utah’s Zion National Park.
For this adventure, I’ll be spending 5 days exploring Zion National Park with my friends Derrick, Dave, and Tayson from Outdoor Vitals and Randy from Outdoor.Detour
We’ll be doing 3 different trips:
A West Rim Backpacking Trip
Exploring & hiking the Frontcountry Zion National Park area while car camping in Springdale, Utah.
Backcountry camping on a top-down Narrows hike, ending at the Zion visitor center back in Springdale.

Objective #1: Backcountry camp on Zion Canyon’s West Rim
Trailhead Used: West Rim Trailhead, Near Lava Point Overlook.

West Rim Itinerary, Day 1:
Park at the West Rim Trailhead near Lava Point.
This is a gravel lot with parking for a half dozen cars or so. It’s about a 40 minute drive from Springdale, Utah. The latter part of the drive is a dirt road, cars should be fine with a bit of care.
Head south on the West Rim Trail
Camp at West Rim campsite #4 N37° 17.144' W112° 59.030'
West Rim Hike-In Mileage: 8 miles
West Rim Hike-In Gross Elevation Gain: 1,073
West Rim Itinerary, Day 2:
Backtrack north on the West Rim Trail
Return to the trailhead lot near Lava Point.
Ghost town pit-stop in Grafton, Utah
Continue on to Springdale, Utah.
Check into the Quality Inn campground in Springdale, within walking distance of the Zion visitor center and park entrance.
Have some tacos at the Whiptail Grill, right next door to the campground.
Objective #2: Explore Zion National Park’s Frontcountry & Springdale, Utah.
Zion Frontcountry / Springdale Itinerary. Day 1:
Take the free Zion bus, or a short walk north to the Zion National Park entrance.
Take the bus from the visitor center to Big Bend.
From the Big Bend bus stop, take the trail south along the Virgin River to Weeping Rock.
Road hike a bit along the Mount Carmel Highway.
Hop a bus back to the Zion Visitor Center.
Explore Springdale, eat some ice cream at the Zion Candy Company.
Objective #3: Hike and Backcountry Camp the Narrows, from the Top Down.
Trailhead: Chamberlain’s Ranch Trailhead (aka Zion Narrows Upper Trailhead)

Note: This was an end-to-end hike that required us to park a second vehicle at the Zion visitor center in Springdale to use as a shuttle back to the starting point.
Zion NP – The Narrows, Top-down Hike Itinerary, Day 1:
Park at the Narrows Upper Trailhead.
Head southwest on the trail, which is actually dirt road, for the first 3 miles.
Continue to follow the trail along the Virgin River, through the Narrows.
This trail is very easy to follow, as it is literally the river. A majority of the time is spent walking in the river bed in ankle deep to knee deep water depending on conditions, depending on current water-flow conditions.
Note for reference: The ccf reading during our trip was roughly 40 CCF. Anything under 50 ccf is considered ideal. Above 100 cfs, conditions can be difficult and hazardous. At 130 ccf, top-down narrows hikes will be closed. At 150 ccf, bottom up Narrows hikes will be closed. During a flash flood, flows can exceed 1000 cfs.

Break camp & continue south along the Virgin River.

Hiking Angels Landing, Zion National Park Utah, USA in 4K Ultra HD
Zion National Park in Utah has plenty of trails, but Angels Landing may be the most breathtaking.
Angels Landing is one of the world's most renowned hiking destinations — though it's certainly not for the faint of heart. With dizzying heights, and hairpin turns, the thousands of hikers it draws every year might not know exactly what they're getting themselves into.
Start Location - The Grotto Trailhead - Zion Canyon
Difficulty - Strenuous; steep with exposure to long drop-offs
Distance - 5 miles (round trip), 4-5 hours
Elevation change - 1,488 feet
Weather - The best time of year to hike Angels Landing is in spring, summer and fall. Summer afternoons are very hot--get up early in the morning while temperatures are still cool. During winter the trail ices over and can be extremely dangerous. Do not hike during a thunderstorm--lightning will strike.
Route description:
The trailhead is at the bridge across the road of the Grotto Picnic Area, in Zion Canyon. The first part of the hike follows the West Rim Trail, which is clearly identified by a sign. The trail is broad and well maintained. The first section is fairly level as it follows the river and then crosses the canyon bottom. Switchbacks allow the trail to climb the canyon wall, up to Refrigerator Canyon. That canyon is pleasantly cool, scenic, and walking is easy.
The trail then climbs another series of switchbacks, called Walter's Wiggles. These 21 switchbacks are very tight and you gain elevation rapidly, but this section is short and not oppressive.
For the final 1/2 mile, the trail follows the ridge across a saddle and up the hogs back. This is where things get interesting, steep, where you are grateful for the chains.

BEST ROAD TRIP: Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Zion, Horseshoe Bend | 4K
Road tripped to these incredible spots in one weekend! They are all amazing, but I cannot wait to get back to Zion National Park. This is easy to do in three days, but more time would allow more time at Zion and to see Bryce Canyon. Map of our route:
TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
*For the drive, we stayed one night at the North Rim West Cabins, then one night in Kanab, which has several hotel options.
GRAND CANYON NORTH RIM:
*Stay in the Western Cabins, they are worth it and are close to the Bright Angel Trail.
*There are far fewer view points to drive to on the North Rim than the South Rim, but give yourself time because they are very spread out.
HORSESHOE BEND:
*It was almost too hot here, and there is over 1 mile hiking.
*There's not too much to do here other than pictures.
ANTELOPE CANYON:

*There are several options for Antelope Canyon, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND: Antelope Canyon X Taadidiin Tours (Hiking Tour). It is the cheapest ($38) and they do not rush you. The experience was amazing! For online reservations (were not needed for us):
ZION NATIONAL PARK:
*Stay at the lodge- it makes it so you don't have to wait in the long bus line in the morning.
*I would stay for at least 3 nights. You wont want to leave.
*Angel's Landing is not that strenuous or difficult, or even extreme, or scary. It's all pretty over hyped, but the view from the top is incredible.

Hop Valley - Zion National Park
The trail begins from the Kolob Terrace Road and wanders through the open fields with wide open views of the surrounding rock formations. As you near Hop Valley, the trail starts its descent. The valley floor of Hop Valley is breathtaking with its flat sandy bottom and vertical walls rising on both sides. The trail is very sandy and well worn. The campsites are at the far end of the valley before the steep descent into La Verkin Creek. This trail is best in the spring, summer and fall. The trail typically has snow in the winter that can remain until early spring. Camping is permitted in designated sites only.
The Ultimate Hiking Adventure in Zion National Park
