by Nanette Naioma Napoleon, Hawaiian Historian
Wednesday, May 8, 2019 @ 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Aliʻiōlani Hale, 417 South King St., Honolulu, HI
King Kamehameha I’s death on May 8, 1819, in the village of Kailua set in motion cultural protocol dictating the preparations of his remains, his religious deification, where his remains would be interred, and who would inter them. His passing initiated a period of ritual chaos exhibited by self-mutilation and extreme verbal grieving. On the 200th anniversary of his death, Nanette Napoleon will discuss this episode in Hawaiʻi’s history, and what it reveals about Hawaiian protocol surrounding death and mourning. Hoʻokupu welcomed.
Nanette Napoleon, the author of Oahu Cemetery Burial Ground & Historic Site, is a Hawaiian historian and has been conducting research on historic graveyards and ethnic burial practices in Hawaiʻi for over 40 years. She is considered to be the foremost authority of historic cemeteries and has been featured in numerous local, national and international publications and television news programs.
The King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center is an administrative program of the Hawaiʻi State Judiciary and a permanent educational institution created to inform and provide learning opportunities about the judicial process and Hawaiʻi's legal history from pre-contact to present. The Center receives financial support from the Friends of the Judiciary History Center of Hawaiʻi, a non-profit attached to the Center.
