Great Buddha of Kamakura Japan | Hachimangu Shrine | Hasedera Temple | Japan ANNventures
Welcome to Japan Annventures
Things to do in Kamakura?
In this video you will see The Great Buddha in Kamakura Japan, The Hachimangu Shrine and the Hasedera Temple
The Great Buddha of Kamakura (鎌倉大仏, Kamakura Daibutsu) is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. With a height of 11.4 meters, it has long been the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara's Todaiji Temple and some recent creations.
The statue was cast in 1252 and originally located inside a large temple hall. However, the temple buildings were destroyed multiple times by typhoons and a tsunami in the 14th and 15th centuries. So, since the late 15th century, the Buddha has been standing in the open air.
The Great Buddha is located a 5-10 minute walk from Hase Station.

The Hachimangu Shrine
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu (鶴岡八幡宮, Tsurugaoka Hachimangū) is Kamakura's most important shrine. It was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, and enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government.
The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and of the samurai in general. The deified spirits of the ancient Emperor Ojin who has been identified with Hachiman, Hime-gami and Empress Jingu are enshrined at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine can be reached from Kamakura Station either through the busy Komachi-dori shopping street, or along the Dankazura, a pedestrian path in the center of Wakamiya Oji Street that is lined with several hundred cherry trees. Via either route, the walk from Kamakura Station to the shrine takes about 10-15 minutes.
Hasedera Temple
Hasedera (長谷寺) is a temple of the Jodo sect, famous for its eleven-headed statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The 9.18 meter tall, gilded wooden statue is regarded as one of the largest wooden sculpture in Japan and can be viewed in the temple's main building, the Kannon-do Hall. According to legend, it was carved from the same tree as the similarly tall Kannon statue worshiped at the Hasedera Temple in Nara Prefecture.
Adjacent to the main hall is the Kannon Museum, a small museum that requires an additional entrance fee. It exhibits some more of the temple's treasures, including Buddhist statues, a temple bell and a picture scroll. Explanatory signs are in Japanese, and an English pamphlet with basic explanations is available. On the opposite side of the main hall stands the Amida-do Hall with an almost three meter tall, golden statue of Amida Buddha.
Hasedera is located a five minute walk from Hase Station, the third station from Kamakura along the Enoden railway line. The Enoden is a streetcar-like train that connects Kamakura with Enoshima and Fujisawa. Its terminal station in Kamakura is located just next to JR Kamakura Station.

In a visit to home for the aged few years ago, I heard an elderly lady telling me a story which killing her softly. She has been fighting for life when she was young. She was busy at work every day and has never traveled anywhere. She now always wanted to go vacation as her friends always tell her that Japan is a very interesting and beautiful place. Although she is already over seventy year old and still healthy, she doesn’t have enough money for vacation. After a volunteer lady knew her story, that lady made her a Japanese photo album which deeply touched by her thoughtfulness.
Today, I have the idea of doing YOUTUBE, thinking about what kind of channel I should start. As I love to travel, just make a traveling record channel! This idea reminds me the old lady in the home for aged and her story has given me more meaning to do this YOUTUBE channel.

???????? Kamakura - Amazing Travel Vid!
Kamakura (鎌倉市 Kamakura-shi?) is a city located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, about 50 kilometres (31 mi) south-south-west of Tokyo. It used to be also called Renpu (鎌府?) (short for Kamakura Bakufu (鎌倉幕府 or Kamakura Shogunate?)).
Although Kamakura proper is today rather small, it is often described in history books as a former de facto capital of Japan as the seat of the Shogunate and of the Regency during the Kamakura Period. Yet, despite Kamakura's annihilation of Kyoto-based political and military power at the Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185, and the failure of the Emperor to free himself from Kamakura's control during the Jōkyū War, Takahashi (2005) has questioned whether Kamakura's nationwide political hegemony actually existed.[1] Takahashi claims that if Kamakura ruled the Kantō, not only was the Emperor in fact still the ruler of Kansai, but during this period the city was in many ways politically and administratively still under the ancient capital of Kyoto.[1] Kamakura was simply a rival center of political, economic and cultural power in a country that had Kyoto as its capital.[1]
According to The Institute for Research on World-Systems,[2] Kamakura was the 4th largest city in the world in 1250 AD, with 200,000 people, and Japan's largest, eclipsing Kyoto by 1200 AD.
As of March 1, 2010, the city has an estimated population of 174,016 and a population density of 4,390 inhabitants per square kilometre (11,400 /sq mi). The total area is 39.60 square kilometres (15.29 sq mi).
Kamakura was designated as a city on November 3, 1939.
Kamakura has a beach which, in combination with its temples and proximity to Tokyo, makes it a popular tourist destination. Kamakura's bay has a surf break off of the headland point, albeit an inconsistent one, which makes it at least a second-tier destination for surfers. It is also noted for its senbei, which are crisp crackers grilled and sold fresh along the main shopping street.

奈良 Nara, 日本 Japan / 春日大社 Kasuga-taisha Shrine (4K 60 Binaural) Ancient Temple / Walk 155
Support me on Ko-fi!
Kasuga Grand Shrine (春日大社 Kasuga-taisha) is a Shinto shrine in Nara, Nara Prefecture, Japan.[1] Established in 768 CE and rebuilt several times over the centuries, it is the shrine of the Fujiwara family. The interior is famous for its many bronze lanterns, as well as the many stone lanterns that lead up the shrine.
The architectural style Kasuga-zukuri takes its name from Kasuga Shrine's honden (sanctuary).
Kasuga Shrine, and the Kasugayama Primeval Forest near it, are registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.
The path to Kasuga Shrine passes through a deer park. In the deer park, deer are able to roam freely and are believed to be sacred messengers of the Shinto gods that inhabit the shrine and surrounding mountainous terrain. Kasuga Shrine and the deer have been featured in several paintings and works of art of the Nambokucho Period. Over three thousand stone lanterns line the way. The Man'yo Botanical Garden is adjacent to the shrine.
The birth of this shrine, according to legend, began when the first kami of Kasuga-taisha, Takemikazuchi, rode on the back of a white deer to the top of Mount Mikasa in 768 CE. This kami is said to have traveled from the Kashima Jingu Shrine in order to protect Nara. The shrine location first received favor from the Imperial government in the Heian period as a result of the power from the Fujiwara family as well as Empress Shōtoku.
From 1871 through 1946, Kasuga Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha (官幣大社), meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
The four main kami enshrined here are Ame no koyane, Himegami, Futsunushi no mikoto, and Takemikazuchi no mikoto. Though these are the primary divine beings of Kasuga taisha, they are often grouped together as a syncretic, combined deity known as Kasuga Daimyōjin. Kasuga Daimyōjin is composed of five divine beings and each consists of a Buddhist deity and Shinto kami counterpart. The fifth deity, Ame no oshikumone, was added much later and is said to be the divine child of Ame no koyane and Himegami. The importance of the multifaceted kami was that it became a template for future worshipers who wanted to combine several deities to pray to at once.
The architectural style of Kasuga-taisha comes from the name of its main hall (honden) known as Kasuga-zukuri. The shrine complex is protected by four cloisters and contains a main sanctuary, treasure house, several different halls, and large gates. One beautiful aspect of this shrine is the many wisteria trees known as Sunazuri-no-Fuji that bloom in late April and early May. This shrine is also home to over 3,000 lanterns which are made of either stone or bronze. An entire hall is devoted to them which is Fujinami-no-ya Hall but the lanterns are only lit during the Setsubun Mantoro and Chugen Mantoro festivals.
The four main kami each have a shrine devoted to them which are all in the same architectural style. They are characterized by sloping gabled roofs, a rectangular structure, katsuogi (decorative logs), and chigi (forked roof structures). The first hall established is dedicated to Takemikazuchi no mikoto, the second to Futsunushi no mikoto, the third to Amenokoyane no mikoto, and the final hall is attributed to the consort, Himegami. Several auxiliary shrines lie outside the main sanctuary that are dedicated to lesser kami. One is alloted to Tsunofuri no kami, that is commonly known as Tsubakimoto Jinja Shrine or Kayabusa Myojin. Kasenomiya Jinja Shrine is attributed to Shinatsuhiko no mikoto and Shinatsuhime who are kami of the winds. Wakamiya Jinja Shrine, created in 1135 CE, is one of the more prominent auxiliary shrines because it houses the kogami, or offspring kami called Ame no Oshikumono no mikoto. The primary worship here revolves around vengeful gods and the dead and is the location of the Kasuga Wakamiya festival.
The Treasure House at this shrine contains hundreds national treasures as well as about many other cultural properties, most of which are from the Heian period. Some of the most noteworthy items that reside here are ornate taiko drums used in gagaku from the Kamakura period, arrows with crystal whistles from the Heian period, and bronze mirrors of the Heian and Nanboku-cho periods.
Kasugayama Primeval Forest is primeval forest of about 250 hectares (620 acres) near the summit of Kasugayama (498 metres (1,634 ft)), and contains 175 kinds of trees, 60 bird types, and 1,180 species of insects. In this area adjacent to Kasuga Grand Shrine, hunting and logging have been prohibited since 841 CE. Because Kasugayama has long been tied to Kasuga Grand Shrine worship, it is regarded as a sacred hill. The forest backdrop of the Kasuga Grand Shrine's buildings today has been unchanged since the Nara period.

JAPAN : Day One
Check out our first night in Shinjuku and our first day in Kamakura Komachi dori street. Shinjuku is one of the 23 wards of Tokyo home of the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Golden Gai, ‘Piss Alley’ aka Omoide Yokocho (where you can eat a still beating frog heart) and Takashimaya Time Square. The following morning we headed to Kamakura Komachi Dori Street for some food, shopping and to see the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū. Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū aka Shinto Shrine established in 11th century, built in 1828 in the traditional Edo architectural style.

I'm sorry, not much cleaner image.
Kamakura Station East Exit. Kamakura's leading shopping street, a small red torii, Komachi street entrance. Restaurants and boutiques, hotels street lined with souvenir shops that are filled with young people and visitors enjoy shopping.
Wakamiya Oji which extends parallel with the main streets of the Hachiman Shrine in Tsuruoka. The Ge center stage as many worshipers walked the heart of Kamakura is a lively show. Also, the old Western-style atmosphere and feel the history of striking churches in this area. The streets of the ancient city, which along with the exotic flavor.
Run throughout the town are so narrow alleys of the capillaries. Both sides of the street has a myriad of such side street, is a glimpse of the real face and step into the Kamakura step.

KAMAKURA - RISE AND FALL OF THE SHOGUNS Episode 1.
A Medieval History of Japan.
Episode 1: CHILDREN OF A WARRIOR GOD - The Rise of the Minamoto.
The first episode of this documentary series looks at the development of the Minamoto family from 9th century imperial princelings, through their 10th and 11th century exploits policing and expanding the outer provinces in the emperor's name to the political and military crises of the 12th century that left them fighting for their very existence. And with this struggle for survival in the wake of the collapse of imperial authority, we see these events propel Japan out of its classical age and into a new and unique feudal Asian society.
We also look at the evolution of Kamakura as a spiritual centre of importance for both Shinto and Japanese Buddhism - a reputation the city had already acquired well before the arrival of its warrior governors and rulers, and how the Minamoto and other samurai used religion to legitimise themselves, politically and militarily.
