Walden Pond 3D
My day at the ledgendary Walden Pond.
From Wikipedia
Walden Pond is a 102 foot- (31 metre)-deep lake in Concord, Massachusetts in the United States.[2] It is 61 acres (250,000 m2) in area and 1.7 miles (2.7 km) around. A famous example of a kettle hole, it was formed by retreating glaciers 10,000--12,000 years ago.
The writer, transcendentalist, and philosopher Henry David Thoreau lived on the northern shore of the pond for two years starting in the summer of 1845. His account of the experience was recorded in Walden; or, Life in the Woods, and made the pond famous. The land at that end was owned by Thoreau's friend and mentor, Ralph Waldo Emerson, who let Thoreau use it for his experiment.[3] Concord Museum contains the bed, chair, and desk from Thoreau's cabin.
Boston's Ice King, Frederic Tudor, harvested ice yearly on Walden Pond for export to the Caribbean, Europe, and India. In his journal, Thoreau philosophized upon the wintry sight of Tudor's ice harvesters: The sweltering inhabitants of Charleston and New Orleans, of Madras and Bombay and Calcutta, drink at my well ... The pure Walden water is mingled with the sacred water of the Ganges.
Now managed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Walden Pond State Reservation is a popular swimming destination in the summer.
At one point there was an amusement park built at the western end of the pond, but it burned down in 1902 and was never rebuilt.[4]
In 1961, the Middlesex County Commissioners, then managing the land, proposed leveling a significant portion of the preserve for a parking lot and other improvements. They had already leveled an acre of woodland for access to the public beach. The Commissioners were sued to stop the destruction of the existing environment. Judge David A. Rose, sitting in the Massachusetts Superior Court, ruled that Walden's deed donating the property to the Commonwealth required preservation of the land and barred further development.[5] This decision achieved national recognition and Judge Rose received hundreds of letters from school children across the country thanking him for saving the land.
In 1977, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts installed a porous pavement parking area at Walden Pond as a special Technology Transfer demonstration project, following methodology generated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1972. The porous pavement still looks good and works well decades later, despite more freeze-thaw cycling than most other parts of the world.[6]

Transcendentalism - On the Road with Rama (Dr Frederick Lenz) Walden Pond, Massachusetts
The On the Road with Rama talks were recorded in 1985 at different power places in the United States. Rama -Dr. Frederick P. Lenz specifically chose these places because the location emanated the essence of the topic he wished to discuss.
Are these talks bound in time? Can you travel with Dr. Lenz even today? Here's what he says in Neutral Density, recorded at the Continental Divide: For me to be here in this moment is to be aware of you, to sense you, to feel who, in what you would call the future, will be listening to my voice -- to feel each one of you because the future already exists. It's just a ring of awareness. And I step into that ring for a moment so that I can be with you now. Not with a sense of knowing that Joe or Suzie is listening, but feeling your being -- because what's in a name anyway?
Walden Pond, Massachusetts
Transcendentalism answers these and other questions, not so much with verbal answers or with a singular philosophy, but by suggesting that there are layers of reality, and that the average individual only sees one or two of these layers perhaps in an entire lifetime.

Concord, Massachusetts is an old historic town located at the junction of the Concord/Sudbury/Assabet Rivers. Concord was settled early by the English as a frontier outpost of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and was the first interior, non-tidal water town in Massachusetts. Concord still retains many well-preserved colonial houses, nine of them on or near Concord green and witnesses of the famous Battle of Concord.
Concord also has a significant literary history. Louisa May Alcott, Bronson Alcott, Emerson and Hawthorne lived in Concord at one time or another and Thoreau wrote his internationally known philosophical treatise at Walden Pond in Concord.
Concord evolved from a frontier town into a prosperous regional center with a mixed society including small yeoman farmers, affluent gentry and immigrants from Italy and Norway. There are high-style, handsome houses as relics of this affluent society along with some country estates. Concord is an affluent community that prides itself on the beauty of its town, the safety of its residents and the excellence of its public school system. For other town tours visit . Walden Pond is a lake in Concord, Massachusetts in the United States. A famous example of a kettle hole, it was formed by retreating glaciers 10,000–12,000 years ago.[4] The pond is protected as part of Walden Pond State Reservation, a 335-acre (136 ha) state park and recreation site managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.[1] The reservation was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962 for its association with the writer Henry David Thoreau (1817–62), whose two years living in a cabin on its shore provided the foundation for his most famous work, Walden; or, Life in the Woods.
The writer, transcendentalist, and philosopher Henry David Thoreau lived on the northern shore of the pond for two years starting in the summer of 1845. His account of the experience was recorded in Walden; or, Life in the Woods, and made the pond famous. The land at that end was owned by Thoreau's friend and mentor, Ralph Waldo Emerson, who let Thoreau use it for his experiment.[4] Thoreau is credited with encouraging a respect for nature at an environmentally degraded site. The Concord Museum contains the bed, chair, and desk from Thoreau's cabin.

An amusement park with swings, concession stands and an event hall, located at the western end of the pond, burned down in 1902 and was never rebuilt.
Virtual reality (VR) is a computer technology that uses headsets, sometimes in combination with physical spaces or multi-projected environments, to generate realistic images, sounds and other sensations that simulates a user's physical presence in a virtual or imaginary environment. A person using virtual reality equipment is able to look around the artificial world, and with high quality VR move about in it and interact with virtual features or items. VR headsets are head-mounted goggles with a screen in front of the eyes. Programs may include audio and sounds through speakers or headphones.
VR systems that include transmission of vibrations and other sensations to the user through a game controller or other devices are known as haptic systems. This tactile information is generally known as force feedback in medical, video gaming and military training applications. Virtual reality also refers to remote communication environments which provide a virtual presence of users with through telepresence and telexistence or the use of a virtual artifact (VA). The immersive environment can be similar to the real world in order to create a lifelike experience grounded in reality or sci-fi. Augmented reality systems may also be considered a form of VR that layers virtual information over a live camera feed into a headset, or through a smartphone or tablet device.
North Bridge and Minuteman Statue at Concord Battlefield, Concord, MA
Site of the Shot Heard 'Round the World and the Minuteman Statue sculpted by Daniel Chester french. The base is inscribed with the lines of Emerson's poem, from which this incident draws its name. Mom attempted to read the inscription but it may not be audible.
French was inspired to create the statue by the story of Capt. Isaac Davis, a Minuteman from Acton who became the first American officer killed in the Revolutionary War. Davis was a farmer and gunsmith, a thirty-year-old father of four. This battle came at a particularly bad time for Capt.and Mrs. Davis, as all four of their kids had come down with canker rash, what is now called Scarlet Fever. Hannah Davis had an eerie premonition that she would never see her husband again and she was right. Davis' group of Minutemen were placed in the vanguard at Concord and saw the worst fighting because they were equipped with bayonets, unlike the other units.
Also, a chance encounter with a Redcoat Major who shared some information with me. He is a Major of the Royal Engineers (not like John Pitcairn, who was a Major of the Royal Marines). A major in those days was still required to carry his own musket, so he wore only one epaulette on the right shoulder and carried his gun on the left. The epaulette is made with gold thread so easily ruined by the weight and constant rubbing of a gun. The gold medallion at his throat is a gorget (gor-zhay) worn as a badge of rank by officers on both sides.
Some of the interview was inaudible so I have summed it up here, although the process of loading a musket and attaching the bayonet can be discerned from the video. He carries a fusil, which is a scaled down version of a Brown Bess (9 lbs v. 14 lbs). However, a fusil still carries a wicked-looking bayonet that means business!
Major John Pitcairn did not die at Concord, but did die two months later at Bunker Hill, falling into the arms of his distraught son. Major Pitcairn lost a pair of Scottish-design ball-trigger pistols at Concord, which came into the possession of Israel Putnam, later a Continental General. Putnam carried the pistols throughout the war.

The 6,000 sf visitor center interweaves with the landscape in order to emphasize the pond and heighten the experience of the site. The building is nestled behind trees and shrubs giving it an air of mystery with a long accessible ramp to draw visitors into the visitor center. Exhibition spaces, a community meeting room and staff offices, create a new hub. A large open-air deck of locally source heat-treated ash with a black locust trellis, addresses the pond and provides a moment of repose at the building’s entry.
The structure is an all-electric, net-zero consumption building and implements Passive House principles. The building has no reliance on fossil fuels. In winter, high-performing triple-pane windows and super insulation keep the heat in. In warmer weather, ample operable windows and ceiling fans create natural ventilation and light, thus reducing the need for air conditioning and artificial lighting. A large solar array provides shade over the parking lot and services all the energy needs of the building. The walls and floors of the building are from locally sourced heat-treated wood to withstand the New England weather, eliminating the need for rainforest wood.
The project is a LEED Gold, Net Zero Energy project.
