Eine Fassade, die keinem Raster folgt, keine gerade Linie, keine rechten Winkel, Fenster, die aus der Reihe tanzen, über 1000 Stück, jedes anders: Wer in der Waldspirale in Darmstadt wohnt, lebt in einem Kunstwerk. Entworfen wurde das Wohnhaus von dem Künstler Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

The Austria artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser is said to have once called straight lines “the devil’s tools.”
Hundertwasser designed many buildings throughout Austria and Germany, but the Waldspirale is a loud testament to Hundertwasser’s hatred of straight lines and his allegiance to nature. Waldspirale translates to “wooded spiral,” and that is exactly what it is. The large spiraled building is topped with an incredible forest - beech, maple and lime trees grow on the undulating, twisting roof. Completed in 2000 – the same year Hundertwasser died – the Waldspirale has 105 apartments and more than 1000 windows. Not one of these windows are shaped the same in this “out of line” building, and many have “tree tenants” growing right through them.
At the highest point the building has 12 floors. You can climb to the wooded spiral roof, which includes a cafe and a bar. Hundertwasser’s aversion to the “devil’s tools” is carried to the interior as well; the corners between the walls and ceiling are rounded off in every apartment. The Waldspirale is a testament to Hundertwasser’s organic aspirations and deep love of nature. As he once said, “If man walks in nature’s midst, then he is nature’s guest and must learn to behave as a well-brought-up guest.” The Waldspirale was the last of Hundertwasser’s creations. He died in 2000, aboard the RMS Queen Mary 2 en route to Germany from Australia to view the work. Many more Hundertwasser creations can be seen in Vienna.

Die Waldspirale ist der Name eines Wohnkomplexes in Darmstadt. Das im Jahr 2000 fertiggestellte Gebäude wurde vom Wiener Künstler Friedensreich Hundertwasser gestaltet und vom Architekten Heinz M. Springmann geplant und ausgeführt. Bauträger ist der Bauverein Darmstadt.
Die Waldspirale ist ein im Bürgerparkviertel Darmstadts gelegener Wohnkomplex mit 105 Wohnungen, einer Tiefgarage, einem Café, einer Bar und einem Kiosk. Im Innenhof befinden sich ein Kinderspielplatz und ein kleiner künstlich angelegter See. Zu den Besonderheiten des U-förmigen Gebäudes gehört die auffällige Fassade, die keinem Gestaltungsraster folgt mit „aus der Reihe tanzenden Fenstern und „Baummietern, aus den Fenstern wachsende Bäume.
Das mit Bäumen und Stauden bepflanzte Schrägdach verläuft ähnlich einer Rampe entlang der U-Form. An seinem höchsten Punkt erreicht das Gebäude eine Höhe von zwölf Stockwerken. Beim Bau des Gebäudes wurden 12.000 Kubikmeter Beton mit rezyklierten Zuschlägen verbaut.
Jedes der mehr als 1000 Fenster der Waldspirale ist ein Unikat. In jeder Wohnung sind verschiedene Klinken an Türen und Fenstern angebracht. Einige der Wohnungen sind im Stil Friedensreich Hundertwassers gestaltet und weisen in Bad und Küche die typischen bunten Fliesen auf. Ebenso sind in diesen Wohnungen sämtliche Ecken an Decke und Wänden abgerundet, um dem Dogma „gegen die gerade Linie gerecht zu werden. Aus Kostengründen wurden nur wenige der Wohnungen der Anlage so individuell gestaltet.
Von außen fallen die typischen Elemente des Hundertwasser-Stils auf: die goldenen Zwiebeltürme, das Fehlen von geraden Linien und Ecken, die bunte Bemalung des Gebäudes in Erdtönen und die farbenfrohen Keramiksäulen.
