This Greek inspired neo-classical temple whose halls honor the Germanic worlds most illustrious and admirable citizens, sits just outside Regensburg in the German state of Bavaria.
The construction for this impressive structure commenced in 1830 and took 12 years to finish.
The interior of the temple holds 130 statue busts and 65 plaques honoring nearly 2 millenniums of history.
The name Walhalla refers to the mythological Norse heaven, except whereas the Norse Valhalla was reserved for slain warriors, this temple exhibits writers, clerics, and scientists as well as warriors.
A progressive aspect of this monument is that the statues and plaques venerate both important men and women.
Significant citizens past may be elected for the honor of being immortalized in this stunning temple; the government of Bavaria makes the ultimate decision of who is added to this laudable sanctuary.

We drove back to the Walhalla in Donaustauf and actually made it to Regensburg without fighting. ???? We spent some time admiring the gorgeous Walhalla and then explored Regensburg, beginning with the Regensburg Cathedral and then having dinner at Sushihaus.

Die Walhalla gilt als das Hauptwerk aller Kunstschöpfungen des bayerischen König Ludwig I. (1825-1848). Erbaut wurde sie vom 18.10.1830 bis zum 18.10.1842. Sie befindet sich an der Donau in der Nähe zur ehemaligen Freien Reichsstadt Regensburg. Die Vorgeschichte des Baues geht zurück auf die Zeit tiefer Erniedrigung Deutschlands, als Napoleon 1807 die Preußen besiegt hatte. Durch die politische Zersplitterung und Schwächung Deutschlands und die darauffolgende französische Besetzung zogen die besiegten Deutschen gegen die noch unbesiegten Deutschen und nahmen später an Napoleons verheerendem Russlandfeldzug teil. Diese Lage wurde von vielen als tiefe Erniedrigung Deutschlands aufgefasst. Man begann zunehmend, eine gemeinsame nationale Identität in der Vergangenheit zu suchen, bis zurück zur Germanenzeit. Die Jahrzehnte später erfolgte Errichtung nationaler Denkmäler, wie etwa des Hermannsdenkmals im Teutoburger Wald, die zwar meist klassizistischen Stiles waren, jedoch germanische Themen aufgriffen, ist ein Resultat dieser Identitätssuche. Ludwig hatte, wie in der ersten der drei Bodeninschriften vermerkt, schon im Januar 1807 den Beschluss gefasst, so bald wie möglich für 50 große Deutsche einen Ehrentempel zu errichten. Walhalla bedeutet übersetzt Totenhalle.

The Walhalla is considered the main work of all artistic creations of the Bavarian King Ludwig I ( 1825-1848 ) . It was built from 10/18/1830 to 18/10/1842 . It is located on the Danube River near the former Free Imperial City Regensburg. The history of the building dates back to the time of deep humiliation of Germany, as Napoleon had defeated the Prussians in 1807 . The political fragmentation and weakening of Germany and the subsequent French occupation of the defeated Germans moved against the still undefeated Germans and later took part in Napoleon's devastating invasion of Russia . This situation was perceived by many as deep humiliation of Germany. They began increasingly to seek a common national identity in the past, dating back to German time . The decades later was establishment of national monuments, such as the Hermann monument in the Teutoburg Forest , although they were mostly classical style , but took up Germanic themes , is a result of this search for identity . Louis had , as noted in the first of three soil inscriptions , passed a resolution in January 1807 as soon as possible to establish a pantheon for 50 large German . Valhalla means Hall of the Dead .

Walhalla wird 175 - Geschichte der Ruhmeshalle bei Donaustauf | BR24
Die Walhalla bei Donaustauf feiert in dieser Woche ihr 175-jähriges Jubiläum. Nach dem Sieg Napoleons wollte König Ludwig I. von Bayern eine deutsche Gedenkstätte. 1807 gab er den Auftrag, 1842 wurde die Ruhmeshalle eröffnet. Seit 2016 betreut die Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung die Walhalla.
Mit einem Festakt soll das Walhalla-Jubiläum gefeiert werden:

Modeled after the Parthenon in Athens, the Walhalla Memorial on the outskirts of Regensburg (in Donaustauf) was built between 1830 and 1842 and overlooks the Danube River. Walhalla houses busts and plaques of famous personalities in German history.
