42. Walking down the street in Pondicherry. Pondicherry, India. August 2015
I stopped to take a walk on a typical block in Pondicherry, south of Chennai. This is an often-visited location because of a neighborhood temple. But there are many hazards for pedestrians. It's an adventure.
A Tour of Peaceful Puducherry, India (Pondicherry)

A Tour of Peaceful Puducherry, India (Pondicherry)
Pondicherry BRUNCH (Breakfast + Lunch) Food Tour - French Breakfast - Vadacurry
The beautiful Pondicherry also known as Puducherry, is one of the most vibrant places we have been to. This place is an amalgamation of a number of cultures owing it to the different colonial rulers. Pondicherry has been under the control of the Portuguese, the French, the Dutch as well as the British, which is what makes this state distinct. Some of the most popular foods in the region are in fact French or Portuguese.
Keeping all things in mind, we began our journey in Pondicherry along with our lovely host Haksheta Rajasekar, at the Baker Street. We tried the classic croissant with a twist of Tandoori Chicken and the perfect breakfast combination of eggs, ham and cheese in a quiche. The flavours may not be too scintillating to the Indian palate that is used to a hefty dose of spices but nonetheless, these dishes were mouth wateringly delicious!
Our next stop was the Murugan Cafe where we tasted a unique uthappam with an even more unique accompaniment. The cashew uthappam is made with a lot of ghee and cashews giving it a very nutty texture, and served along with is a Vadacurry. The cashew uthappam was crispy yet super fluffy and we learnt that like all good things in life, the vadacurry was made by accident when the cook mixed a few leftover vadas with stew.
Then for a pick-me-up we visited the Sri Sai Ram Coffee Bar for some Filter Coffee. Like we always say- ‘a trip to South India is incomplete without a cup of Filter Coffee.’ The Filter Coffee here, is super strong and is the perfect way to awaken your senses.
Later we reached J A Arcot Biryani Hotel for some out-of-this-world Biryani. The chicken biryani here is made with long grain basmati rice unlike the short grain rice which is popular in the region. The biryani has a strong flavour from the ginger and garlic and is absolutely delicious. This biryani style is popular in Arcot, which is a small district in Vellore. From here we went on to explore the famous Gourbet market. The market is named after the first Chief Minister of Pondicherry, Édouard Gourbet. The market is filled with varieties of colourful flowers, vegetables and spices. Here we discovered the different types of Banana leaves and their different uses, and Mor Milagai which is chillies soaked in buttermilk that makes it salty and then sun dried. To beat the heat we tried the Neer Mor, which is just what you need on a hot summer’s day. We even visited the Fish market where you get some of the freshest variety of seafood.
Then, we moved on to a place called Irfan Restaurant. This is located in a Muslim dominant region, which is to say the food is absolutely divine. Here we tried the Nei Parotta, Nei means Ghee in Tamil, which simply means the Parotta is fried in desi ghee. It is served with Mutton Saalna or curry, and we also got the Naati Khozi Fry/ Desi Chicken Fry. The combination of these three things is to die for! You can get this same combination evene early in the morning for breakfast or you can go for the slightly healthier option and try the mutton saalna with idiyappam.
Finally, our lovely food tour came to an end with some rocking Sherbet. R K Juice Centre is known for serving the Paal Sherbet that is made from condensed milk, milk, nannari sarbath, sabja seeds and almond gum. This drink is served completely chilled, it is healthy and super refreshing! So if ever you're in Pondicherry and hoping to find more some local food options, don’t forget to visit these places. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

Pondicherry Food Tour - Mutton SAMOSA & PAAYA Soup | Chicken MACRONI | Franco - Tamil Food
Another day, another tour. Or trip to Pondicherry was full of new and innovative dishes that were supremely tasty. We went through the streets of Pondicherry and tasted a South Indian style chaat called Verakadala Sundal- made from boiled peanuts mixed with tomatoes, onions and a few spices. This is a burst of flavours in the mouth and is a perfect snack to be chomping on the beach.
We then went to KBS Coffee Bar, but not for coffee. This shop has been around for the longest time and along with serving coffee they also give Chettinad Kuzhi Paniyaram. The Kuzhi Paniyaram is made using rice batter and urad dal which is steamed in small moulds known as Kuzhi. This is then served with a super hot chutney called kaara chutney. Soft, fluffy and perfectly spice the paniyaram is one delightful snack.
Now for some meaty goodness we landed at a cart serving mutton samosa. Here the samosas are filled with a combination of keema or minced mutton, cabbage, onion and quite a few spices. Even better is that they serve Paaya or Leg soup which goes perfectly well with the samosa. People usually dip the deep fried, crispy samosa into the soup and let the flavours do the work.
Next we ended up at Paati Kadai for some good old fried foods. Paati means Granny in Tamil so it is basically like grandma’s kitchen. Here we tried prawn, fish and chicken bajji. Everything that you get at this little shop is perfectly spiced, fried and served. I mean nothing can go wrong when Grandma is cooking!
Pretty soon we found ourselves in the middle of a war about to breakout or at least that is what it felt like. The huge number of people weighing down this tiny little sop were just there for their chicken macaroni. The macaroni is made with a combination of unique things like noodles, eggs, chicken cooked in south indian spices and curry leaves along with a lot of red chillies and pepper. The flavours of this dish are so distinct that once you;ve had a taste, you cannot stop. For a traditional home cooked meal we went to Puducherry Hotel Sri Kamatchi. We tried the chicken Dosa which is heavily spiced with black pepper and is served with different types of chutney and surprisingly some chicken curry.
The next day, we started our journey with a cup of hot and ultra strong Filter Coffee. The Indian Coffee House is truly about giving you the ultimate coffee experience. Later for a true Franco-Tamil food experience. We visited Maison Perumal to meet Chef Babu who prepared some exquisite dishes just for us. We tried, a simple salad made with chickpeas, some veg and boiled egg whites; prawn cooked in mustard and coconut curry or Kudugu Iral, and finally some Prawn Spinach Soup. Each and every preparation was unique and simply delicious.

FRENCH COLONIAL BUILDINGS IN PONDICHERRY! | Pondicherry Vlog
I spent my afternoon walking around Pondicherry town marvelling at it's many French Colonial Buildings. They are so colourful and it's so unique seeing these in an Indian Town!
I went out on a walking tour with Story Trails when I got to Pondicherry who told me a lot about the town and what it was like when the French ruled Pondicherry which was really interesting to hear.
I stayed at Micasa Hostel in Pondicherry which is the only hostel right now and a great place to stay.

Top 10 Restaurants in Pondicherry | Food Guide 2018
Places to eat in Pondicherry are plenty and so I thought of doing a video solely on the best restaurants in Pondicherry.
In February early this year, we happened to spend 3 days in this Little French town in India, and we found ourselves craving for more! Pondicherry was a French colonial settlement till the mid 20th century, and the legacy is still prevalent in the architecture, and oh the food!
Our first food stop, was at the Auroville bakery on our way back from the Matrimandir, and is known for its croissants and other freshly baked products. It also has the best burgers we have ever tasted!
Our next stop, dinner at Le Dupleix! It is right in the middle of White Town, and as is evident from the name, has a French colonial architecture and serves fusion food. Ideal for a romantic date or for a relaxed night out with friends. It is actually a hotel, so you can consider staying here overnight as well!
Indian Kaffe Express has a really fun interiors, and if you feel tired while walking along the Promenade, consider treating yourself with a snack and some drinks here!
One of the must visit places is Café Xtasi, again, in White Town, which is well known for its wood-fired pizza. But I would recommend, stick to the pizza and some drinks only, and skip the rest of the items on their menu!
No vacation is complete without piling on some Dessert calories right! This ice cream parlor called Cream Affair, is not just super Instagram friendly, it also serves the fanciest desserts, like this one in a Hong Kong style bubble waffle!
Café Des Arts is one of those cult places which you cannot come back without paying a visit, even if it is just for some coffee, because frankly the food isn’t the best here. However, the quirky décor is to die for! Go here to have some crepes, some Thai cold coffee and perhaps chill with a book in hand while enjoying your meal!
Pondicherry is full of such small interesting cafes and eateries so don’t shy away from trying new places here!
Hope you enjoyed this video. Do not forget to like, share, comment and subscribe if you like it, and I will see you soon…till then, Happy calories!
Summarizing Must visit places:
1. Auroville Bakery
2. Le Dupleix
3. Cafe Xtasi
4. Cream Affair for Ice Creams
5. Indian Kaffe Express
6. Cafe Des Arts

Pondicherry - Must Watch before you visit - Beautiful French Colony - Rock Beach Time Lapse
The history of the city of Pondicherry is recorded only after the arrival of Dutch, Portuguese, British and French colonialists. By contrast, nearby places such as Arikamedu, Ariyankuppam, Kakayanthoppe, Villianur and Bahur, which were colonised by the French East India Company over a period of time and which later became the union territory of Pondicherry, have recorded histories that predate the colonial period.

Local life of Pondicherry : archival Footage
Footage of woman folks taking walk in Pondicherry. Tourist is seen riding a bicycle and bikes enjoying a warm sunny day. A man rides a motorcycle. An old man rides on the old streets of Pondicherry. Local women strolling on the streets of Pondicherry.
The union territory of Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry; generally known as ‘Pondy’) was under French rule until 1954. Some people here still speak French (and English with French accents). Hotels, restaurants and ‘lifestyle’ shops sell a seductive vision of the French-subcontinental aesthetic, enhanced by Gallic creative types and Indian artists and designers. The internationally famous Sri Aurobindo Ashram and its offshoot just north of town, Auroville, draw large numbers of spiritually minded visitors. Thus Pondy’s vibe: less faded colonial-era ville, more bohemian-chic, New Age–meets–Old World hang-out on the international travel trail.
The older 'French' part of town (where you'll probably spend most of your time) is full of quiet, clean streets, lined with bougainvillea-draped colonial-style townhouses numbered in an almost logical manner. Newer Pondy is typical, hectically South Indian.

A French Heritage Tour with a Twist of Pondy! - PONDY TOUR RICKSHAW RIDE
Legacies from the French Era
To the casual passerby the only hint of Pondy’s French occupation are the stately manors and ornate monuments clustered within the “White Town”. Despite modernization there remain an astonishingly large number of French-era edifices in pristine condition.
Most of them have been either converted to boutiques, guest houses or heritage hotels, but many are still residences and some still are passed down from generation to generation and remain within the old families of yesteryears.
Take a walk to soak in the magnificence of these buildings and monuments and learn their story with guided tours.
But if walking is not your idea of a vacation, hop on to a cycle rickshaw and listen to the comments of your driver cum “guide” in Tanglish: roughly chopped English spiced with the local lingo – ahem that sounds more like the recipe of the sundal!

Pham Ngu Lao nightlife is also one of Ho Chi Minh’s finest, with throngs of street vendors, bia hoi stalls, lively bars, and downtown clubs filling up the lively scene. Interesting nightlife entertainment spots include The View Rooftop Bar, Seventeen Saloon, Go 2 and Crazy Buffalo Nightclub as well as many smaller pubs that are known for their cheap drinks and happy hour promos. It’s also common around here to meet friendly expats who are more than happy to share a few tips about travelling in and beyond Vietnam. If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, we highly suggest getting up early and visit the parks within the area. It is interesting to see (and even to join in on) the elders participating in Tai Chi-like exercise sessions. Another must-do is heading to the morning markets such as Ben Tanh Market, where local vendors sell a wide array of fresh produce, household supplies, and Vietnamese street food at attractive prices. As Pham Ngu Lao is not such a large area, it’s the perfect place to explore on foot - the best time to do this is in the morning and late afternoon as the weather can be rather scorching at the height of the day. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also travel agencies that can help arrange for day trips within the city centre and beyond...

T nagar street shopping smart city | Chennai Pondy Bazaar | India Walking Tour
Thyagaraya Nagar is one of the busiest shopping districts of Chennai. The neighbourhood is considered to be the biggest shopping district in India by revenue. There are a number of apparel, jewellery and utensil stores based in Thiyagaraya Nagar. By some estimates, the shops in the neighbourhood together accounts for revenues of nearly ₹ 20000 crores annually. However, official estimates put it much lower at over ₹ 10000 crores, which is still double that of New Delhi's Connaught Place and Mumbai's Linking Road which account for about ₹ 4000 to 6000 crores annually. The neighbourhood accounts for about 70 to 80 percent of the gold sold in Chennai, the most important gold market in South India. Usman Road is the costliest commercial stretch in Chennai. The area around Panagal Park is known for its high-end textile shops, chiefly dealing with silk sarees, and jewellery stores. As of 2006, the real estate prices were ₹ 11,500 per square feet. Wardrobes stores Nalli Chinnasamy Chetti and Naidu Hall are based in Theagarya Nagar. Other important wardrobe stores such as Pothys, The Chennai Silks, RmKV and kumaran silks and also have their showrooms in Theagarya Nagar. Retail giant Saravana Stores has a wardrobe showroom and an utensils showroom in Thiyagaraya Nagar. Ranganathan Street is one of the most crowded roads for pedestrian traffic during day time. The road is full of big name establishments side-by-side smaller and petty shops that sell all sorts of household goods and garments.
It also houses one of the biggest private lending libraries in the city, 'Raviraj Lending Library' on Usman Road.
Smart city has been created. A ₹ 338-million pedestrian plaza was planned in 2013 by the city corporation. It involves provision of a pedestrian-friendly footpath on the 1.45 kilometre-long stretch of the Theyagaraya Road between Panagal Park and Anna Salai. It will cover 1,450 metres of Thyagaraya Road from Bashyam Road near Panagal Park to Anna Salai. The plaza will be divided into three stretches with different identities. A 12-metre wide pedestrian space will be developed in the 730-metre stretch from Panagal Park to the Thanikachalam Road junction.
Upon completion, only city buses and motorcycles will be permitted in this area in a 7-metre carriageway smart city. All types of vehicles will be allowed on the 370-m stretch from Thanikachalam Road to the Boag Road junction, where the pedestrian plaza will be only 3.5 metres wide and carriageway will be comparatively wider measuring 15 metres. All vehicles will be permitted on the 350-metre stretch between the Boag Road junction to the Anna Salai junction.
The proposal for a cycle track has been replaced with a plan to introduce battery-operated cars. A multi-level car parking lot has also been planned. Other facilities in the plaza include seating, public toilet and a children's play area.
Theagaraya Nagar, commonly known as T. Nagar, is a very affluent commercial and residential neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The stretch between Doraiswamy Road and T Nagar Bus Stand has some of the costliest real estate in Chennai. It was constructed between 1923 and 1925 by the Madras Presidency government of the Raja of Panagal as a part of town planning activities initiated according to the Madras Town Planning Act of 1920. The town was named after P. Theagaraya Chetty. The streets, parks and localities in the new neighbourhood were named after important officials in the provincial government.
Initially built as a residential neighbourhood, it is now considered the largest shopping district in India by revenue. It is known for its plethora of saree and jewellery retailers, including Pothys, Nalli Silks and Saravana Stores. The neighbourhood is served by Mambalam railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. T. Nagar is considered one of the city's major central business districts, the other being Parry's Corner, the centre of the city. Pondy Bazaar serves as a satellite commercial hub for T. Nagar located around the Thyagaraya Road.
In 2013, to address the traffic concerns of the neighbourhood, Chennai Corporation tied up with real estate advisory firm Jones Lang LaSalle to exercise a proposal to redevelop the area, especially the shopping centres. T. Nagar will also be the site for the Smart City Mission in Chennai as per the Government data.
