Walsall welcomes the Duchess of Cornwall
Yesterday, staff and service users of the Lichfield Street Hub in Walsall were delighted to meet HRH, The Duchess of Cornwall, who spent time touring the refurbished facility.
The Lichfield Street Hub, a Grade ll listed Edwardian building formerly known as the Central Library, re-opened its doors in January 2019 on the completion of a sensitive £4.56m renovation.
The Duchess of Cornwall first visited the children’s area to meet toddlers and parents attending a Gruffalo-themed, ‘Tiny Tots’ session. Her Royal Highness was then shown around the Walsall Archives Repository where she saw artefacts such as the oldest Walsall charter, granted to the burgesses of Walsall in the 13th century, as well as images of Walsall from the past, including other Royal visits.
The Duchess then met representatives from the Hub’s diverse range of activities, including the 'Walsall Works' job club and a mindfulness colouring group in the multi-functional space. Her Royal Highness coloured the last part of a drawing the mindfulness group had been working on and this will be framed and put on display.
Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Paul Bott, said:
“I was very proud to welcome the Duchess of Cornwall today, on behalf of the people of Walsall, to our beautifully restored Lichfield Street Hub.”
Councillor Garry Perry, Portfolio Holder for Community, Leisure and Culture said:
“The Hub is a facility designed to meet 21st century needs and I hope that the visit of her Royal Highness today will encourage even more of our residents to pay a visit and see what’s on offer.
Natasha Brookes, who attends ‘Tiny Tots’ sessions with her daughter Felicity said:
It's been very exciting to have the Duchess here today and show off what a wonderful facility we have here in Walsall.
The Royal visit concluded with the Duchess being invited by Councillor Paul Bott, Mayor of Walsall, to declare the Hub officially open by unveiling a plaque.

Walsall Council - new highways maintenance contract
• Councillor Lee Jeavons, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Transport and Walsall Council’s Deputy Leader.
• Apologies for not being present at this important event.
• Today will hopefully give you an overview of what we’re achieving here in Walsall and the nature of this multi-million pound contract.
• As a Walsall resident born and bred, I know how important good roads are, both for keep our residents safe and for supporting our local economy. In what remains as very challenging times, it’s important that we use taxpayers’ money wisely and make sure the services we provide are as efficient as possible.
• Each year we maintain around 530 miles of roads, a network that has been valued at around £1.4 billion which makes it by far the most valuable asset owned, managed and maintained by the council.
• We’re a borough that cares about our businesses and their needs. That’s why we’re working with our local authority colleagues and partners to bring in new investment through regional, national and European funding.
• We’re working with our colleagues and key partners to improve business links through combined funding. We recognise the need to make transport links more accessible and flexible to avoid residents relocating to bigger cities.
• Of course, we need to ensure that any maintenance work carried out is to a high standard, within agreed timescales and with minimum disruption to local residents
• As future bidders for our Highway Maintenance Contract you may chose to use our existing depot or alternatively you may prefer to provide your own facilities, to cover the range of services that will be delivered through the contract. With this in mind we will be looking very closely as to how you will deliver the main element of the contract whilst demonstrating how you will create positive outcomes for Walsall’s people, economy and communities.
• The contract duration will be determined by the outcome and feedback you have already provided in your questionnaire along with feedback from this event
• The prequalification questions will commence towards the end of July and the tender documents issued for completion early October 2017
• Enjoy the following presentations as our officers further expand on the details in the contract and I look forward to working closely with the successful contractor in the future.

Willenhall is a medium-sized town in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall, in the West Midlands, England, with a population taken at the 2011 census of 28,480. It is situated between Wolverhampton and Walsall, historically in the county of Staffordshire. It lies upon the River Tame, and is part of the Black Country.
The urban district of Willenhall (established by the Local Government Act 1894) was partitioned in 1966 between the county boroughs of Walsall and Wolverhampton (since 1974 the metropolitan boroughs of Walsall and Wolverhampton).
The northern border of Willenhall has always been adjoining green belt land, although the extend of Willenhall's expansion has meant in the last 100 years its northern border has been moved by about two miles. This is mostly due to housing developments in the Short Heath and New Invention areas.
The town is historically famous for the manufacture of locks and keys. As early as 1770 Willenhall contained 148 skilled locksmiths and its coat of arms reflects the importance of this industry to its growth. It was home to the National Union of Lock and Metal Workers from 1889 until 2004. Its motto is Salus Populi Suprema Lex - The welfare of the people is the highest law.
Willenhall has been described as undoubtedly a place of great antiquity, on the evidence of its name it manifestly had its origins in an early Saxon settlement. The Anglo-Saxon form of its name Willanhale may be interpreted as 'the meadow land of Willa' - Willa being a personal name.
Willenhall is well served by buses. The town centre lies on the 529 Bus route, which links Walsall and Wolverhampton running every 10 minutes on average during weekdays. Willenhall is poorly served by other modes of public transport. Both of the towns two railway stations (Willenhall Bilston Street railway station and Willenhall Stafford Street railway station) have been closed for over 40 years, and although plans were bought to reopen Bilston Street, this never materialised due to the withdrawal of funding for the rail line it would serve.
Willenhall is currently not served by the Midland Metro Tram Network, but was one of the numerous expansion plans for the system is the 5 W's Route, which would link Willenhall with Wednesfield, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Wednesbury via Darlaston, Bentley, Reedswood, Birchills, New Cross Hospital, The Manor Hospital and Heath Town This however, never materialised.
The main landmarks include: The Locksmith's House museum in New Road; the cholera burial ground in Doctors Piece; St Giles Church; the bandstand in Willenhall Park; the Clock Tower, The Bell Inn, the malthouse (now Davey's Locker shop), and the Lock and Key sculptures in the market place; Dale House (now a restaurant) and the Dale cinema (now a Wetherspoon's pub); the Toll House (now a restaurant), and the old Town Hall (now the library) in Walsall Street.

AFTER A SUCCESSFUL INVESTIGATION BACK IN APRIL WE GO BACK IN THE HOPES OF RECREATING THE ACTIVITY FROM OUR FIRST NIGHT.
SOME ACTIVITY DOES OCCUR SUCH AS K2 ACTIVITY, EVP`S, COLD SPOTS, FOOTSTEPS AND SHADOW FIGURES WITNESSED BY MEMBERS.
Wolverhampton's first public library had been established in 1869 after the passing of the Public Libraries Act and was situated in the Old Athenaeum in Queen Street.
The library became very popular and in 1872 the Town Council moved it to larger premises in Garrick Street. By 1896 over 1,000 people a day were using the library.
The Diamond Jubilee Fund
Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of 1897 led to the building of a new free library. A committee was set up to raise money for the building. The Diamond Jubilee Fund, as it became known, eventually raised £9,000.
A competition was held for the design of the new library. The conditions for the building included a cost limitation of £10,000 with some form of reference to the Diamond Jubilee included in the design. The winner of the competition was Henry Hare.
Demolition of the theatre
The Council decided to build the new library on the site of what was previously the Old Theatre Royal on the corner of Garrick Street and Cleveland Road, land that had been purchased in 1897. The theatre was demolished and the building materials sold; the money raised from this sale was added to the Jubilee Fund.
Royal visit
The foundation stone was laid on 23rd July 1900 by HRH Duke of York, (later King George V) to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. The building was officially opened in 1902.

The Central Library is built of red brick with yellow terra cotta facades.
Famous names
The windows on the Garrick Street side of the building have panels above them bearing the names of Chaucer, Dryden, Pope, Shelley, Byron and Spencer.
The windows facing Cleveland Road bear the names of Shakespeare and Milton. In 1936, due to increased use of the library by the public an extension to the building was added.
The Central Library today consists of a Public Lending Library, Children's Library, Reference Library and a Learning Centre.

Here the tram now pulls away from town hall station heading towards the Birmingham library which will be the terminus for now until extension of the midland metro line to Edgbaston will be completed next year here we see the tram passing through paradise circus just beyond that

Hey everybody!! Day #11 of my 2016 European Summer Tour and for this food challenge I'm at Dave's Cafe in Walsall, England of the United Kingdom. I'll be attempting their undefeated Native Monster Breakfast Challenge which had to be finished in less than only 30 minutes!!

Dave's Cafe's Native Monster Breakfast Challenge (£15):
This challenge included 5 fried eggs, 5 black pudding, 5 sausages, 5 rashers of bacon, 5 hash browns, 5 HUGE pieces of toast, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans, fries, and a DENSE 5 egg omelette filled with chicken and cheese. Challengers have only 30 minutes to finish the entire meal. Winners receive the meal free and a spot on their empty Wall of Fame. Note: This challenge was obviously poorly planned and the time limit was way too short. There will be another video posting in a few months. I helped them create a smaller challenge that humans can actually win and then I reattempted the new revised challenge. The biggest change was getting rid of that ridiculous omelette which isn't even British.

That anonymous council spokesperson's quote saying this: Haringey Council Statement: We're very disappointed that a £3million investment to revamp and modernise one of our most popular libraries has been misrepresented. The refurbishment of the library will see it enhanced with new books and equipment, as well as additional services. is the biggest bit of spin this council has done in a long history of spinning, it is outrageous.
The library will lose half its space, and have council offices taking over the rest. Many precious books have been deleted, notably the Black Triangle collection of Black History books.

Cannock Chase - Regional Odyssey - Midland Memories.
Midlands Memories - Staffordshire.
First featured on this video the once rural town of Cannock followed by the surrounding area known generally as the Cannock Chase district.
Starting with the Floral Festival and the Queen's Silver jubilee celebrations in 1977.
The odyssey goes back in time to the dim and distant past and yet it was only yesterday!
A Cannock Chase Odyssey is part of the 'Midland Memories Series'. This video is like an odyssey through time and the history of an area forming part of South Staffordshire in the central UK. Most of the area covered has changed almost beyond recognition but will be recalled by those of a certain age who treasure such memories. Once upon a time we were basically all rural peasants, living and working upon the land according to the rhythms and moods of Mother Nature. We look back as on a lost Elysium with small close communities shaped by the the landscape and topography.
Cannock Chase communities however, were founded mainly on the coal seams that happened to surface near by and so easy to mine. Now even that has passed by into history over the last thirty years or so. Mining was a dirty dangerous business, however the strong sense of bonding among the miners and their families facing a common danger is something rarely encountered today. Life has become easier certainly but not necessarily simpler or happier.
Cannock Chase also bears the now fading scars of two world wars. In this video we visit some of the camps that were set up to train the brave soldiers and airmen due to be sent away to a very uncertain future, this was in order to protect our future!
We can't live in the past, but that does not mean that we should not respect our past and our history. Some of us will nevertheless yearn hopelessly for what has been lost.
