Ted Parsons: From Wangaratta
Ted Parsons was a keen amateur filmmaker of the 1940s to 1960s. Ted’s films feature life in and around the regional city of Wangaratta in Victoria.
Ted Parsons: From Wangaratta (Reel 3, c.a. 1956) captures travels around Victoria as the Parsons take a trip from Wangaratta to Beechworth, down through Mount Buffalo to San Remo and Philip Island on the south coast, and back up through the Dandenong Range and Healesville.
The film shows scenes of life in country towns of Victoria, including sporting and recreational events and the flooding of Ovens River, and includes some beautiful footage of Philip Island, the Australian Alps in autumn, and the Tesselaar Tulip Festival in Healesville.
The Parsons' travels also take them to the Hume Dam, formerly known as the Hume Weir, which was a popular tourist destination during the 1940s and 50s.
A feature of the film is the flooded roads and paddocks of Wangaratta during the 1956 floods, which stemmed from major flooding in the Murray River.

Bird Photography - Winter Road Trip - Jan Wegener Vlog
Jump back to June, cold temperatures, great company, and some awesome birds and bird photography in Australia! I finally had time to edit a vlog from our bird photography road trip.
We drove from Melbourne to Wangaratta, then all the way to the South Australian Mallee and back! 3500km later, we were exhausted, tired, cold, but happy! Not everything worked out as planned, but in the end, we got some great bird photos!

Hope In My Pocket - Debut Album
Nationally and internationally acclaimed Australian musicians Kristin Berardi (vocals), Sean Foran (piano) and Rafael Karlen (saxophone) have officially combined their love for music and passion for Australian history into the creation of their debut album Hope in My Pocket, out Oct 2nd through Planet / Pinnacles Music
Collectively known as Berardi /Foran/Karlen (BFK), Hope In My Pocket is a musical exploration through the powerful experiences and emotions contained throughout the archived written
correspondence of ANZAC history.
Pianist Sean Foran explains: “The main thing we really wanted to be sure of was that we could sensitively address the themes that we found in the history of the ANZACS. Given that the material we wanted to write was songs we thought the best way to gather material for this was to look at
letters”.
Encouraged to try to musically retell this piece of history to modern Australia, we made a number of emotionally draining yet inspirational trips to the QLD State archives and QLD State Library. The amount of letters that we looked through over a few days was enormous. Letters from soldiers back to their families, from families to soldiers, from families to the government, from medical personnel, from friends. Our initial concept was to be really wide in our scope but the further we progressed, and the more we looked at all the letters, we realized that a clear list of themes that we felt we needed to explore in the music, were emerging, and that in order to respect the letters, we needed to interpret them not literally, but thematically.
These themes were hope, fear, separation, loss, love, and the conditions of war. We also wanted each song to look at an experience and / or emotion.”
The intensely intimate, textural and emotional sound of Berardi/Foran/Karlen was recorded live before the trio had played any of the material at a performance, complementing the rawness and reality of the overarching song themes. Musically, the beautiful vocal melodies and saxophone are such a striking combination that at times, almost blur into one; while the absence of drums and bass gives the tracks a great deal of space and a sense of silence to enhance the content.
The trio embark on a national tour of Australia from Sept – Dec, 2015 with performances around the country at clubs and festivals including the Wangaratta Jazz Festival

The Wangaratta TEC is an initiative of the Victorian Government, Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (GOTAFE) and Wangaratta High School, and is the first of four TECs to be established in Victoria.
The Wangaratta TEC offers young people, 15-20 years of age, a high quality and full-time vocational education and training (VET) in an adult learning environment.
Opportunities include the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL),
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), both with a VET emphasis, school based apprenticeships and traineeships and non school-based traineeships and pre-apprenticeships.

Albert Tucker was born in Melbourne, on 29 December 1914. His grandfather and namesake Albert Lee Tucker, MLA, was mayor of Fitzroy. By the time Albert was born his father, John Tucker, was working on railway maintenance. His mother Clara (née Davis) was aspirational, but with insufficient income the family found life difficult. Albert left school young and worked at subsistence jobs. By 1934 he was working at John Vickery’s commercial art studio in Collins Street and drawing freelance for women’s magazines. This brought him into contact with Melbourne’s creative artistic community, including the young modernist Sam Atyeo, and the conservative Sir John Longstaff. In 1933 he began attending evening classes at the Victorian Artists Society (VAS). Other evenings were spent at the old reading room of the State Library. He also haunted Gino Nibbi’s Leonardo Bookshop, and befriended the proprietor. Tucker exhibited for the first time at the VAS in 1933. A self portrait of 1937 attracted the attention of the Herald's art critic, Basil Burdett, and he left his full-time job. The same year he took some classes at the George Bell school but soon left,preferring to direct his own learning. Along with Bell and other discontented artists Tucker became a founding member of the Contemporary Art Society in 1938. In 1939 he bought a second hand camera, and it his photographs that so memorably records the life of the Angry Penguins circle in the 1940s.Through his friendship with Harry de Hartog and others he became involved in the Artists’ Branch of the Communist Party. From the late 1930s, Tucker’s art was increasingly influenced by Surrealism. His interest was endorsed by the art he saw in the 1939 Herald Exhibition of French and British Contemporary Art, which featured works by Dali, Ernst, de Chirico and Picasso.
In 1938 he became romantically involved with Joy Hester, an art student from the National Gallery School who began attending Victorian Artists Society life drawing classes, and in 1939 they moved in together.
Tucker and Hester married on 1 January 1941. By this time John and Sunday Reed were financially supporting Tucker’s career as well as befriending Hester and encouraging her art. At Heide they were joined by Sidney Nolan, whose ménage à trois with the Reeds was public knowledge.
In 1942, after Japan entered the war Tucker enlisted in the medical corps. His status as an artist led to him making illustrations for the officers at the Wangaratta base and after a bout of pneumonia was medically discharged in October 1943. The sight of shell-shocked and profoundly injured soldiers newly returned from the front continued to haunt him for the rest of his life, and coloured the direction of his art.
Tucker began to paint works based on his disgust at the sexual promiscuity of young girls in times of war, a concern that evolved into a savage critique of strong female sexuality. Many of his paintings are dominated by a shape based on a full-lipped woman’s mouth, evolving into an agressive lipstick pink crescent, and this shape recurred for the rest of his painting life.
After leaving the Army, Tucker worked for a while with Arthur Boyd at his pottery at Murrumbeena, but then resumed work on bq). Images of Modern Evilbq). , an emotionally searing response to young girls, American soldiers and the War. On 4 February 1945 Joy gave birth to their son Sweeney (although Sunday later claimed that Tucker may not have been the father).
In early 1947 Tucker visited Japan, and saw the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, images that would always stay with him. He met with Japanese artists and painted portraits of American officers to raise money to buy cultured pearls for resale in Australia. On his return from Japan he was told that Joy had been diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease, and had two years to live. In his absence Joy had met the artist Gray Smith, and when she was told of her illness the marriage was over. Hester left Sweeney with Tucker who left the baby with the Reeds while he considered his future. He was eventually persuaded to allow them to adopt his son. It was a decision Tucker regretted for the rest of his life.
He died of a heart attack at a private hospital where Barbara had taken him for tests.
