Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park is located in south of the town of Ely in White Pine County, Nevada. The most impressive feature of this area is the 6 coal Ovens which is thirty feet tall and twenty-seven feet in diameter at the base, with a wall thickness of 20 inches. These honey comb shaped structure are actually coal kilns or coal furnaces operated from 1876 to 1879, they were coal-fired stoves from pine wood and juniper wood.
The dazzling charcoal ovens town-site was established in 1872, by Thomas F. Ward and it was named after the founder of the local mining area. The idea of building this coal furnace was in the centuries ahead of the Woodchoppers found that burning wood in an oxygen-poor environment can produced charcoal easier to transport and burned at a higher temperature than wood.
Coal production is very common in the Northern European and Eastern European Alps, and coal furnaces at the time are shallow holes without permanent structures for long term benefits. The immigrants brought their charcoal-fired technology to the Nevada mining areas, which were thought to be particularly useful when a high temperature was needed to grind all hardened ores.
However, these huge coal mines did not last long and they were abandoned for quite a long time. After its inactivation in 1879, these coal mines were not abandoned but became bad weather probes. or into a pasture. Over time, these tall coal furnaces have turned into places for visitors. It is also a quite deserted place so it is suitable for those who love tranquility and tranquility.
