Lions and Cheetahs record historic wins
Cheetahs captain Adriaan Strauss hailed his teammates performance as the most gutsy bunch of guys his played with in their maiden Super Rugby win against the Bull in Bloemfontein. It had taken the Cheetahs eight years and nine matches before they could beat the Bulls but Strauss said it was important for his team to remain humble........
Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske said that his team's tactical play was the most pleasing aspect of their 15-9 win over the Bulls and that he appreciated the fact that they were able to rise above the wet and rainy conditions.........
Drotske said that the win placed pressure on the team as they jetted off on their tour of Australia and New Zealand as it was the first time they were going on tour on the back of a win.........
Bulls coach Frans Ludeke conceded that the Cheetahs were tactically superior and that his team failed to convert the pressure they had applied into points......
Ludeke urged the Bulls supporters not to get emotional with the fact that his team have lost both of their games so far this season and said that it was important for the players to experience losing if they are to appreciate what it takes to win games........
Lions coach Johan Ackermann struggled to contain his emotions and said that he was proud of his team's performance in their historic 34-10 win over the Stormers in their Super Rugby encounter at Ellis Park. It was the Lions first win over the Stormers in Super Rugby and the Stormers biggest losses in recent times.......
Ackermann went on to say that this was one of the best matches he has been involved in as a coach with the character that his team showed especially when they were one man down in the second half......
Lions captain Warren Whiteley said his team's success came from them believing in their structures and from their win last week against the Cheetahs but warned that they need to stay humble and focus on their next match against the Bulls next weekend at Loftus Versfeld........
Stormers captain Jean de Villiers says that their loss against the Lions was their worst performance in seven years and that every single player in the team needs to take responsibility for what transpired on the field. De Villiers did say however that his team have an opportunity to rectify their flaws when they play against the Hurricanes at Newlands.......
De Villiers commended the Lions for playing clever rugby and taking full advantage of the scoring opportunities they created but was still left with question marks over the commitment of his team to the jersey.......
De Villiers also said that they had done everything possible in their preparations in the 14 weeks leading up to their first game of the season but all the preparation in the world accounts for nothing if they are not able to execute it on the field when it matters the most.......
