Our party of eight shuffled into the back of a Red Sangthaew (Thai transportation truck) and made our way up the serpentine road leading to Doi Suthep temple. Peering out the back of the truck as we ascended the mountain, I spotted Thais whizzing past us on crammed motorbikes with as many of three passengers on one seat. The ease at which locals were making their way up the temple was in stark contrast to how our party was faring as we grabbed tightly onto the passenger railing trying our best not to vomit given the excessive fumes being emitted from our vehicle in tandem with the constant back and forth motion of the winding road.
After 15 minutes of shifting back and forth we finally made a stop at the first lookout point located roughly half way up the mountain. Traipsing past Thai ladies selling trinkets and refreshments we witnessed our first unobstructed views of Chiang Mai; however, unfortunately, a combination of morning haze and clouds prevented us from seeing much aside from a a few select buildings.
Upon reaching the top of the mountain we began our climb up 309 steps to reach Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple. Immediately, I couldn't help but notice the hoards of tourists - especially Chinese vacationers - visiting this temple situated high atop of the mountain. I'm not sure why I expected different but I had envisioned a quaint temple on top of a mountain with very few visitors. Immediately, I found myself having to recalibrate my expectations to correspond with reality.
This popular Theravada Buddhist temple was built in 1383; however a road was not constructed to temple until 1935. The origins of the temple remains a mystery to this day. Legend has it that a white elephant climbed up Doi Suthep (at the time called Doi Aoy Chang (Sugar Elephant Mountain)) trumpeting three times before passing away at the site.
Wandering around the perimeter areas of the temple wasn't particularly impressive. Aside from it being overcrowded, the exterior of the Wat was very ordinary and typical of other 'free' and easily accessible temples dotted all over Chiang Mai; however, once I removed my footwear inside the interior section, I was treated to more impressive statues, bells, shrines and the spectacle of locals praying both by standing up and walking and sitting down.
Located just 15 kilometers from the old quarter of Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep can be easily reached by Red Sangthaew. Our group of eight paid 800 Baht total (100 per person) for our driver to take us up the mountain (30 minute drive), wait for us for two hours and bring us back into the city center.
This morning we're venturing up to Doi Suthep and there is a temple atop the mountain overlooking Chiang Mai, so we're going to be taking a red songthaew to get there and hopefully the views of the city will be amazing.
Ideally you should be able to see the views of Chiang Mai from up here but today it is just really hazy, so there is a cloud hanging over the city. We can't really see much, which is unfortunate.
That concludes our visit to Doi Suthep. It is definitely different than what I expected. I was kind of expecting this quaint little temple on top of a hill and instead it is an extremely popular tourist attraction. It is really crowded over here.
I would say the exterior of Doi Suthep is quite similar to a lot of the other Wats we have visited here in Chiang Mai. However, the highlight for me was actually going inside the temple because there is a courtyard with a golden stupa and you can walk around light candles and there is incense burning, so that was a great experience.

Temple you SHOULD visit in CHIANG MAI // WAT PHRA THAT DOI KHAM
I go on a mission to get to the Big Buddha Temple known as Wat Phra That Doi Kham. This is one of the lesser known Buddhist Temple on the outskirts of the city and not much of a tourist trap like the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple which you will also see early in the video & which attracts thousands of tourists every day. The temple on Doi Suthep costs tourist 30 Baht to enter. Temples are sacred and the correct clothing should be worn upon entry.
The Big Buddha temple also has no admission fee and on the day I was out there it was totally free of tourists. This was by far my favorite temple I have visited in Thailand to date. The rich smell of incense fills the air and the view from the top is amazing as you overlook the outskirts of the city which is filled with trees from the forests.
My channel is mostly Mountain Biking & adventure focused but I do get an off day and when I do I am able t create these Vlogs.
I hope you enjoy it.

A must see, on any visit to Chiang Mai, is the wondrous and holy temple of Wat Phra That which is located near the top of Doi Suthep (Mount Suthep). The temple is simply referred to as Doi Suthep by most people. Every tuk-tuk and songthaew driver in Chiang Mai will offer to take you on the 15 klm trip up the winding mountain road to Doi Suthep.
Built as a Buddhist monastery in 1383 it is still a working monastery today. Funds raised by donations and the lift fee go to support the monks living there and for maintenance of the various temple buildings. The architecture, statues, murals and shrines seen here are nothing short of breathtaking.
On arrival at Doi Suthep you will be in a large car park, the temple complex is up the side of the mountain beside the car park. Starting with a walk up the 300 steps of the intricately carved mythical Naga Serpent Staircase you begin to marvel at the splendour of your surroundings. For those that do not fancy the 300 step climb up to the complex, you can go up the lift for 30THB ($1) and walk down the staircase when you have finished.
On reaching the top you are greeted with the sight of the golden spire which decorates the centre of the mountain top temple. The walls around the spire form a mini enclave and are richly decorated with historical murals and shrines. Here you find a beautiful copy of the Emerald Buddha statue on display. The real Emerald Buddha statue is now in Bangkok.
Outside this central enclave area you will find the shrine to the White Elephant and the story of how the temple on Doi Suthep was founded. There is a wide walkway around the main temple which leads you to a large viewing terrace with terrific views down over Chiang Mai, weather permitting. Just past the viewing terrace is one of the worlds largest gongs, which makes an earthly rich sound when struck. Give it a try, it is allowed.
On leaving Doi Suthep temple area descend the Naga Serpent staircase back down to the car park area. At the bottom of the staircase you will find several souvenir shops and a throng of vendors selling local handicrafts.

Doi Suthep mountain rises about 1000 metres ( 3,542 ft ) above sea level; there are fine views over the city of Chiang Mai to be had from the temple's lower terrace. The terrace is surrounded by large bells that are rung by pilgrims to bring good luck. On the northwest corner of the terrace is a statue of the legendary elephant who chose the site of the temple.
The monastery was established in 1383 by King Keu Naone to enshrine a piece of bone, said to be from the shoulder of the historical Buddha. The bone was brought to Lanna by a wandering monk from Sukhothai and it broke into two pieces at the base of the mountain, with one piece being enshrined at Wat Suan Dok. The second fragment was mounted onto a sacred white elephant who wandered the jungle until it died, in the process selecting the spot where the monastery was later founded.
Outside this central enclave area you will find the shrine to the White Elephant and the story of how the temple on Doi Suthep was founded. There is a wide walkway around the main temple which leads you to a large viewing terrace with terrific views down over Chiang Mai, weather permitting. There is a model of the Emerald Buddha and a statue of the Hindu God Ganesh. Views of Chiang Mai can be seen on the far side of the temple.

Morning
Wat Phra That Doi Kham, Chiang Mai, Thailand 2018
A 17 Meter high sitting Buddha image on hill top
Location Mae Hia sub district
Chiang Mai
The Wat Phra That Doi Kham temple is located on top of a mountain South West of Chiang Mai city in Mae Hia sub district almost 10 kilometers from the town center. It is just North of Royal Park Ratchaphruek.
The easiest way to get there is to hire a taxi. Most hotels in Chiang Mai can book one for you. Because of its location away from the city it might not be easy to find a taxi at the temple for the way back, therefore a round trip booking would be convenient. Agree on the price before setting off.
Entrance fee & opening hours
The temple grounds are open daily from 6 am until 5 pm.
Admission is free.
The Wat Phra That Doi Kham is an attractive not much visited temple known for its 17 meters high Buddha image. The temple that was built towards the end of the 7th century sits on top of a forested hill just outside of Chiang Mai. The name of the Wat means golden mountain temple.
The oldest structure of the Wat Phra That Doi Kham temple is the chedi (pagoda), that was constructed in the year 687. It shares many characteristics with the chedi of the better known Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple, that is found a little more to the North.
Huge golden colored Naga serpents guard the stairs on both sides of the pagoda that is enclosed by a gate. The chedi enshrines a sacred relic of the Buddha. A local legend tells about two giants who lived in the Doi Kham area thousands of years ago and who were said to be cannibals. When the Buddha visited the area he convinced the giants to give up cannibalism and convert to Buddhism. The Buddha gave them a relic of his hair, that is now enshrined in the temple’s chedi.
When the chedi collapsed in 1966 after heavy rain, local people discovered a number of Buddha images inside the damaged structure. Funds were then raised and the chedi restored.

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep Mountain Top Temple Chiang Mai Thailand - Phil in Bangkok
Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (Thai: วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ) is a Theravada Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The temple is often referred to as Doi Suthep although this is actually the name of the mountain it is located on. The temple is located 15 km from the city of Chiang Mai and is a sacred site to many Thai people. From the temple impressive views of Chiang Mai can be seen and it remains a popular destination of foreign visitors.
History
The original founding of the temple remains a legend and there are a few varied versions. The temple is said to have been founded in 1383 when the first chedi was built.[1] Over time the temple has expanded, and been made to look more extravagant with many more holy shrines added. A road to the temple was first built in 1935.
White Elephant Legend
White elephant shrine
According to legend, a monk named Sumanathera from Sukhothai had a dream; in this vision he was told to go to Pang Cha and look for a relic. Sumanathera ventured to Pang Cha and is said to have found a bone, which many claim was Buddha's shoulder bone. The relic displayed magical powers; it glowed, it was able to vanish, it could move itself and replicate itself. Sumanathera took the relic to King Dharmmaraja who ruled the Sukhothai.
The eager Dharmmaraja made offerings and hosted a ceremony when Sumanathera arrived. However the relic displayed no abnormal characteristics, and the king, doubtful of the relic's authenticity, told Sumanathera to keep it.
However, King Nu Naone of the Lanna Kingdom heard of the relic and offered the monk to take it to him instead. In 1368 with Dharmmaraja's permission, Sumanathera took the relic to what is now Lamphun, in northern Thailand. The relic apparently split in two, one piece was the same size, the other was smaller than the original. The smaller piece of the relic was enshrined at a temple in Suandok. The other piece was placed by the King on the back of a white elephant which was released in the jungle. The elephant is said to have climbed up Doi Suthep, at the time called Doi Aoy Chang (Sugar Elephant Mountain), trumpeted three times before dying at the site. It was interpreted as a sign and King Nu Naone ordered the construction of a temple at the site.
Stairs to Wat Doi Suthep
The wat can be reached by road from Chiang Mai. From the car park, at the temple base visitors can climb 309 steps for free to reach the pagodas or there is a tram.[2] Entry to the temple on the tram costs 30 Thai baht for foreigners (or 50 baht if you would like a two-way tram ticket included) and is free for Thai nationals.
Once inside the temple grounds; visitors must take off their shoes. Visitors must be appropriately dressed. The original copper plated chedi is the most holy area of the temple grounds. Within the site are pagodas, statues, bells and shrines. Aspects of the Wat draw from both Buddhism and Hinduism. There is a model of the Emerald Buddha and a statue of the Hindu God Ganesh. Views of Chiang Mai can be seen on the other side of the temple.
