Wat Sisaket, Vientiane, Laos
Wat Sisaket is a Buddhist temple that is one of the oldest surviving in Vientiane, Laos. It was built by King Anouvong, the last King of the Lao Kingdom of Vientiane in 1818. Wat Sisaket survived the destruction of Vientiane by Siamese armies during the Laotian Rebellion of 1826-28.
Wat Sisaket is one of the popular tourist attractions of Vientiane city.

Sisaket Temple situated in the heart of the city of Vientiane, is the only temple to sobrevio invasion of the Siamese army in 1828, which becomes the oldest temple in Vientiane that retains its original appearance to Sisaket. Wat Si Saket in Vientiane, Laos
Wat Si Saket is a Buddhist wat in Vientiane, Laos. It is situated on Lan Xang Road, on the corner with Setthathirat Road, to the northwest of Haw Phra Kaew, which formerly held the Emerald Buddha.
With very contemplative ambience, probably the oldest standing temple in Vientiane and among the most atmospheric. Built in 1818 by Chao Anou in the Bangkok-style and hence left unsacked when much of Vientiane was razed in a Siamese raid in 1828. Within the cloister walls are hundreds of niches housing Buddha images large and small, made of wood, stone, silver and bronze. In the centre of the courtyard is a five-tier-roofed sim (ordination hall) housing yet more Buddha niches and beautiful, but fading murals of the Buddha's past lives.
Wat Si Saket was built in 1818 on the orders of King Anouvong. Si is derived from the Sanskrit title of veneration Sri, prefixed to the name of Wat Saket in Bangkok, which was renamed by Anouvong's contemporary, King Rama I. Wat Si Saket was built in the Siamese style of Buddhist architecture, with a surrounding terrace and an ornate five-tiered roof, rather than in the Lao style. This may have kept it safe as the armies of Siam that sacked Vientiane in 1827 used the compound as their Headquarters and lodging place. It may now be the oldest temple still standing in Vientiane. The French restored Wat Si Saket in 1924 and again in 1930. Wat Si Saket features a cloister wall with more than 2000 ceramic and silver Buddha images. The temple also houses a museum.

Wat Si Saket in Vientiane, Laos
Exploring the grounds of Wat Si Saket in Vientiane, Laos. Wat Si Saket was built between 1819 and 1824 by Chao Anou and is believed to be Vientiane’s oldest surviving Buddhist temple. Today it’s an active temple and a national museum. I explore the grounds, finding a small cemetery in the back with recent tombstones. There are more graves on the temple’s western side. Some have beautiful new grave markers while others are old and crumbling; sadly some are not being maintained. I then go inside Wat Si Saket, where there are thousands of Buddha images ranging in size from a few inches tall to perhaps 30 feet.

The temple was founded in 1818 by King Anouvong & is one of Vientiane's oldest surviving temples. Together with That Luang and Haw Pha Keew, they form the city's most important Buddhist sites. Although a working temple, the Ubosot and surrounding cloister have been designated a museum.
The Hall is built in the Siamese style with a five-tiered roof (currently undergoing restoration) and a surrounding terrace. Enclosing the courtyard is a cloister whose interior walls contain over 2000 small niches each housing two small Buddha images. Within the cloister are over 300 large Buddha images.........

Vientiane became the capital in 1563 due to fears of a Burmese invasion but was later looted then razed to the ground in 1827 by the Siamese (Thai). Vientiane was the administrative capital during French rule and, due to economic growth in recent times, is now the economic center of Laos.
Vientiane is noted as the home of the most significant national monument in Laos: That Luang, which is a known symbol of Laos and an icon of Buddhism in Laos. Other significant Buddhist temples in Laos can be found there as well, such as Haw Phra Kaew, which formerly housed the Emerald Buddha.

Wat Si Muang is one of Vientiane’s most popular sites of worship
According to local legend, when the temple was being built in 1563 a young pregnant woman named Si Muang volunteered to sacrifice herself to appease the angry spirits. She threw herself into a hole in the ground where the building’s central pillar was to be placed, and was crushed when the massive pillar was lowered into position.
During the Thai invasion of Laos in 1828, the temple was destroyed. Rebuilt several times afterwards, the present building dates to 1915.
The interior of the temple is lavishly adorned in the usual manner with carved gold pillars, brightly coloured ceiling friezes and painted scenes from the life of the Buddha. Interestingly, the temple contains two rooms. The front chamber usually has a monk on hand to accept alms and give in return blessings. The second room contains an ornate altar where worshippers give their offerings to the Buddha.....
The temple is one of the most revered temples in Vientiane and is always busy....
