Wat Umong Chiang Mai,Thailand
Wat Umong (complete name: Wat Umong Suan Puthatham) is a 700 year old Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is located against the mountains of Doi Suthep and is south of Chiang Mai University.
Wat Umong is unique in that the resident monks live in a very natural setting, and occasionally feed the deer that live in the area. There are tunnels with Buddhist images below the chedi which can be easily explored. Signs and saying hang from the trees on footpaths leading to the small lake where fish and turtles can be fed.
Of particular interest is an intact Ashoka Pillar similar to the one at at Sarnath Museum which has since been adopted as the National Emblem of India.
Note: There is a temple with a similar name within the old city moat of Chiang Mai, whose complete name is Wat Umong Maha Thera Chan.

Wat Umong (complete name: Wat Umong Suan Puthatham) is a 700 year old Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Wat Umong is located against the mountains of Doi Suthep and is about 1 km south of the main campus of Chiang Mai University. The wat occupies a tranquil setting and a small open zoo is stationed behind it.
The temple was built in 1297 by King Manglai of the Lan Na dynasty. Of particular interest is a replica of the Ashok Pillar similar to the one at Vaishali with four lions and a wheel at the base and an additional larger wheel on top that acts as an umbrella for the lions. A similar pillar is also available at Sarnath Museum. The four lion head is adopted as the National Emblem of India.
Wat Umong is unique in that the resident monks live in a very natural setting, and occasionally feed the deer that live in the area. It also is possible to practice meditation at Wat Umong and to learn from the Monks.

Wat Umong Tunnel Temple Chiang Mai Thailand
Wat Umong is an amazing 700 year old temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Umong actually means tunnel in the Thai Language and when you visit the area you will know why. Carved out ancient tunnels that you can explore leading up to incredible Buddha Statues.
Wat Umong is not on the regular Tourist to do list in Chiang Mai. In fact most tourists have no idea of this wonderful and unique area. The back story of the temple is quite interesting. Built in 1297 by King Manglai in order to keep a wandering Monk from leaving the grounds.
Seems this monk had some mental conditions and often roamed into the bush. The tunnel was painted with a bush like design on the walls in hopes to keep this very important monk from going into the forest.
Wat Umong has more than just the tunnels which alone is worth the trip. There are some ancient statues that are lined up outside. A breathtaking Chedi on top of the tunnel structures and finally a huge pond with trees, statues. Birds, Fish and turtles can all be seen around the pond.
Lastly, Wat Umong is still inhabited by Monks that meditate and live in the area. Often when you visit the temple you can hear the mesmerizing sounds of the monk's chants all around you.
