Around Kansas - Alcove Springs - Oct. 14, 2015
(Frank) And we're back. I just had this thought, it's very obvious we're back, but we have to think we have to say, we're back! Hey, I know you know this, but you know, Kansas had all kinds of trails coming through it, I mean we're pretty much the center of the United States, and so there were cattle trails and of course there were trails... (Deb) Just like this. (Frank) ...heading to Oregon and California and all of that. And this was one of the stops. So, with that I'm gonna kind of let you talk a little bit about that. (Deb) Well if you haven't been to Alcove Springs, it is beautiful and it is easy to see why it became a popular stop with folks along the Oregon Trail, and it's just, it's like an oasis in the prairie you know with the trees and it's beautiful, falls again, they do have actual little falls there. But it's just one of those beautiful, must have been a beautiful respite for the pioneers that were coming through. So, we're gonna take a look at that. Our friend Bob Hoard, state archaeologist, recently headed a group of volunteers that conducted an archaeological survey at Alcove Springs on the Blue River downstream from Marysville. As Bob wrote in the Kansas Preservation Magazine, Alcove Springs is one of the best-known
stops on the Oregon Trail and is listed on the National Register of Historic laces. Proposed parking areas necessitated the investigation to insure that nothing important would be lost of disturbed. The army of volunteers turned up few artifacts, including a five-cent piece from 1866, but not enough to delay the construction plan. This picturesque area was a favorite campsite near the Independence Crossing of the Big Blue River. The spring originates in an unusual rock formation and falls over a rock ledge into a pool below. Emigrants carved their names in the rocks surrounding the spring and many of these carvings are still visible. The ill-fated wagon train led by George Donner and James Reed camped here in May, 1846. Later that year, trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, some of the pioneers resorted to cannibalism to survive. While camped in the lushness of Alcove Springs though, one of their number wrote “We found a large spring of water, as cold and pure as if it had just been melted from ice. It gushed from a ledge of rocks, which composes the bank of the stream, and falling some ten feet, its waters are received into a basin. A shelving rock projects over this basin, from which falls a beautiful cascade of water, some ten or twelve feet. The whole is buried in a variety of shrubbery of the richest verdure. Altogether it is one of the most romantic spots I ever saw. We named this the Alcove Springs and future travelers will find the name graven on the rocks, and on the trunks of the trees surrounding it.” Reed’s mother-in-law died here while the party was waiting for the river to fall enough to cross. She was buried somewhere in the area. In September the Topeka Symphony Orchestra opened its 70th season at Alcove Springs. Kyle Pickett, music director and conductor, told the Topeka Capital Journal that performing music in the natural setting of Alcove Springs was “an unparalleled experience.” Alcove Springs is located about six miles south of Marysville on the River Road. Follow the highway directional signs.

America's Greatest Landmarks - USA Travel Attractions
Take a tour of America's Greatest Landmarks -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
I'd like to show you America's Greatest Landmarks
The National Mall is known as the hub of historic activities in Washington DC. Lavishly spread across acres of green grass, this open area national park has been often used for public demonstrations, marches, rallies and concerts. The area of the park extends from the illustrious capital building to the proud Lincoln Memorial.
One of the most iconic bridges in the world, The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco to the tip of Marin County. This suspension bridge, completed in 1937, is also famous for its so called International Orange color produced by the sealant used. A dazzling approximate 118 thousand cars pass through this mighty structure every day, a testament to its impressive engineering.
Shining brilliantly on New York Harbor's Liberty Island, is the Statue of Liberty. A rather generous gift from the French nation, the statue consists of a representation of the Roman Goddess of freedom clasping a torch. Arguably the most popular internationally recognizable symbol of America, it also stands as an effigy of freedom.
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is an enduring symbol of freedom and hope which graces the lands of South Dakota. Four former presidents have been elegantly carved 60 feet high into Mount Rushmore. A national treasure, the monument pays homage to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
This resplendent brick Georgian building in Philadelphia is Independence Hall. This majestic monument has witnessed many historic events in the history of United States. The signing of The Declaration of Independence and the adoption of the United States Constitution took place in this glorious structure.

ALCATRAZ ISLAND (U.S. National Park Service)ALCATRAZ ISLAND (U.S National Park Service)
Alcatraz Island is located in the San Francisco Bay, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) offshore from San Francisco, California, United States. Often referred to as The Rock, the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963. Beginning in November 1969, the island was occupied for more than 19 months by a group of Aboriginal peoples from San Francisco who were part of a wave of Native activism across the nation with public protests through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
Owens Valley: Lone Pine
LA taps much of their water from Owens Valley, killing an otherwise thriving agricultural community. Hollywood uses the local hills as a backdrop.
Lone Pine is the gateway to the highest of the High Sierras, with peaks such as Mt. Whitney exceeding the tallest in the contiguous United States.
This video touches on the bittersweet affair (albeit more bitter than sweet) between Los Angeles and Owens Valley, and ends with an unsuccessful, but breathtaking hike up the Mount Whitney Trail.
Northern Mexico & Copper Canyon
Our friend Lee York takes us on a excursion through NORTHERN MEXICO to visit COPPER CANYON.
We'll begin in Topolobampo and enjoy the beautiful bay. Then we'll take El Chepe, part of the Chihuahua-Pacific Railway, into the higher regions of Chijuajua.
Next we join in some local Independence Day festivities, and enjoy regional ceremonies and dances at Cerocahui.
Our central destination is Copper Canyon (Spanish: Barrancas del Cobre). This is actually a group of six separate rivers that create a vast region of dramatic canyons.
The area is inhabited by the indigenous Tarahumara people who now support themselves largely through tourism.
After a brief stop at Lake Arareco, we explore the modest cliff-side dwellings of the local people.
-------
Here are a few more details via Wikipedia:
Topolobampo is a port on the Gulf of California in northwestern Sinaloa, Mexico. The port connects the northern Mexican states through the Chihuahua-Pacific Railroad.
The Chihuahua-Pacific Railway, also known as El Chepe, is a major rail line in northwest Mexico, traversing the Copper Canyon, a rugged series of canyons that have led some to call this the most scenic railroad trip on the continent. It is both an important transportation system for locals and a draw for tourists.
Cerocahui is a town in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, located in the Sierra Tarahumara it is internationally recognized for being one of the main places of festivities of Holy Week of the Tarahumara ethnic groups.
Copper Canyon (Spanish: Barrancas del Cobre) is a group of six distinct canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua in northwestern Mexico. The canyons were formed by six rivers that drain the western side of the Sierra Tarahumara (a part of the Sierra Madre Occidental). All six rivers merge into the Rio Fuerte and empty into the Gulf of California. The walls of the canyon are a copper/green color, which is where the name originates.
The Tarahumara or Rarámuris are an indigenous community in northern Mexico, in the part of the Sierra Madre Occidental that crosses territory of the state of Chihuahua and the southwest of the states of Durango and Sonora . The Rarámuri endónimo means the one of the light feet or runners on foot.
Lake Arareco is a lake high in the Sierra Madre Occidental range, within Chihuahua state in northwestern Mexico. The lake is U-shaped. It is surrounded by unusual rock formations, and a fragrant pine forest. It is located about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi)s south of Creel A few kilometres away a scenic canyon has the Cascada Cusárare waterfall, which drops 30 metres (98 ft).
