This cluster of little wooden huts once ground local farmers’ wheat into flour during the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Jajce, in the central region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a historic city all about falling water. Famous for its enormous waterfall in the middle of town, the meeting of two rivers – the Pliva and the Vrbas – established the region in the 14th century as the capital of the then Kingdom of Bosnia. There’s a town castle, old fortified city walls, high mountains and deep river valleys. And just downstream, in the area of the Pliva Lakes, is a collection of about 20 little huts that once served as watermills for local farmers.

We visited this cluster of little wooden huts that were once used to ground local farmers’ wheat into flour during the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The day trip is about a 2 ½ hour drive from the Capital city of Sarajevo approximately 157km/98mi. Well worth the trip as you will pass thru the town of Jajce which has a marvelous water fall that flows thru the center of it overlooked by an early century Astro Hungarian Fort. We will be posting these videos shortly. Overall two trips to this location while in Bosnia and enjoyed each one!

The Waterfall in Jajce | Bosnia and Herzegovina
The waterfall of the Pliva river is in the centre of Jajce and is one of the twelve most beautiful waterfalls in the world. This is also the only one that is situated in the middle of a town.
The clean and clear Pliva river falls from 17 meters high into the river Vrbas in a magnificient way. This is a natural monument of beauty.
Jajce also offers an exciting and adventurous rafting program. Local associations provide the equipment and the skippers.
The rafting on the Vrbas River begins from a village called Vinac and ends at the waterfall in Jajce. Total length of the course is 12 km. Vrbas River has a canyon and is much more challenging and wilder than the Pliva river.
Jajce is situated in the mountains, there is a beautiful countryside near the city, rivers such as the Vrbas and Pliva, lakes like Pliva lake, which is also a popular destination for the local people and some tourists.
At the Pliva lake you can do some watersports: kayaking, canoeing and rowing. The tradition of these sports is associated with the exceptional quality of this lake : its geo-strategic position and its High-density of water provide excellent conditions for preparing before big competitions, championships, Olympics, etc.

At the village of Jezero (near Jajce) the Pliva river flows into the larger of two lakes, Veliko Plivsko Lake (veliko meaning large), then into two smaller Malo Plivsko Lake (malo meaning small).

And just downstream, Also theirs a collection of about 20 little huts that once served as watermills for local farmers.
The little windowless huts sit on top of skinny stilts right over the gushing water. Since the flow here is spread out, by using a series of little mills instead of one big water wheel, the diffuse water power could be aggregated. Pretty ingenious. Most of the huts go back to the period of the Austro-Hungarian empire (about 1867 to 1918)

Historic Watermills of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
These tiny wheat flour watermills built on the natural waterfalls that feed into Pliva Lake. They were built during the early part of the Austro Hungarian period of Bosnia history and are an awesome visit! Jezero is a village and a municipality in western Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The municipality was created from part of the pre-war municipality of Jajce (the other larger part of the pre-war municipality is now in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina). The village name of Jezero actuallys means lake.

A unique experience in the mountains of central Bosnia and Herzegovina. We are at the Pliva Lakes in Jajce where we stay for 2 days. After a huge rainstorm floods the area we discover some creepy things along with some stunning ones around the lake. This ended up being a crazy fun and unique experience as we meet Bosnian War Veterans, eat huge amounts of awesome food, discover the old fantasy looking spot of the Jajce Historical Watermills and then eat more awesome food.
