Watkins Glen State Park is located outside the town of Watkins Glen, New York. The centerpiece of the park is a 400-foot-deep narrow gorge cut through rock by a stream, Glen Creek. In this video I explore the beginning of the Gorge Trail along the stream which runs over, under and along the park's 19 waterfalls by way of stone bridges and more than 800 stone steps. Unfortunately the 800+ steps were more than my arthritic feet could handle, but I explored as much of the trail as I was able.

We just got back from a 40 day road trip back east and part of that
was going to TBEX conference in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. #myflxtbex We took a tour through Watkins Glen State park weather was rainy as could be so the next day I took the boys back for a hike. Watkins Glen NY is a small town near Corning. Watkins Glen State Park New York is located in the middle of the town. Known for its speedway / race track, the town also hosts the Watkins Glen Gorge which is where the state park is. There are a ton of waterfalls and accessible hiking. It's a relatively small park but visually stunning. It has some of the best waterfalls in ny state parks in my opinion and is one of the best things to do in Watkins Glen NY. The boys and I didn't get to hike the whole trail because we ran out of time and we got hungry but it's good to know that the entry to the park is free and parking in their lot is just $8 a day. There are numerous hotels in the town and surrounding area and camping nearby.

Watkins Glen, New York is a small town located on the southern tip of Seneca Lake, one of western New York's glacial Finger Lakes. The town is noted for its role in auto racing, being the home of a street course used in road racing, a famous racetrack, Watkins Glen International, which has hosted the NASCAR Cup Series Cheez-It 355 at The Glen, IndyCar Series Grand Prix at The Glen, and the IMSA SportsCar Championship 6 Hours of Watkins Glen.
This video focuses on the area in and around the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel where I spent the night. I walk around the harbor of beautiful Seneca Lake and take a short drive through town.

Watkins Glen State Park is situated in the village of Watkins Glen, south of Seneca Lake in the town of Dix, New York.
The park is spread over an area of 778 acres with three trails either running along the wooden rim of the gorge or running over and under the park’s 19 waterfalls by way of stone bridges and steps.
The closest to the stream is the Gorge Trail which has over 800 steps which can be used for either climbing or descending the gorge.
We chose the Gorge Trail and experienced the spectacular views of the waterfalls, cascades and caverns.
Watkins Glen State Park is one of the most well known parks of the Finger Lakes region. So, when you plan to visit Niagara Falls, do include this nature’s beauty. We visited both the places in the first week of September last year i.e Sept, 2018 and the weather was amazing.

In our travels of the Eastern United States, one place that came highly recommended to us was Watkins Glen State Park, in Upstate New York. My brother had lived in the area and recommended we stop. Boy were we in for a treat!
Watkins Glen is one of those places that just feels unreal. The amazingly shaped canyon with it's winding staircases and tunnels feels like something out of a fantasy movie. The hike up the glen is hard to truly capture on film. You just don't get a sense of the space from images, but we tried. Emma helped me film a lot of this video and is a budding cinematographer!
If you decide to visit Watkins Glen be aware that it is very wet and can be slippery! Having some good shoes or boots with tread on them is a good idea. I would also give yourself lots of time to explore this amazing place. Our stop was admittedly shorter than we would have liked. We didn't expect it to be so cool!

Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, with a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound. Within two miles, the glen's stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. Rim trails overlook the gorge. Campers and day-visitors can enjoy the Olympic-size pool, scheduled summer tours through the gorge, tent and trailer campsites, picnic facilities and excellent fishing in nearby Seneca Lake or Catherine Creek, which is renowned for its annual spring run of rainbow trout.

Watkins Glen State Park is located outside the village of Watkins Glen, New York, south of Seneca Lake in Schuyler County in the Finger Lakes region. The park's lower part is near the village, while the upper part is open woodland. It was opened to the public in 1863 and was privately run as a tourist resort until 1906, when it was purchased by New York State. Since 1924, it has been managed by the Finger Lakes Region of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.[1]

The centerpiece of the park is a 400-foot-deep (120 m) narrow gorge cut through rock by a stream – Glen Creek – that was left hanging when glaciers of the Ice age deepened the Seneca valley, increasing the tributary stream gradient to create rapids and waterfalls wherever there were layers of hard rock. The rocks of the area are sedimentary of Devonian age that are part of a dissected plateau that was uplifted with little faulting or distortion. They consist mostly of soft shales, with some layers of harder sandstone and limestone.
The park features three trails – open mid-May to early November – by which one can climb or descend the gorge. The Southern Rim and Indian Trails run along the wooded rim of the gorge, while the Gorge Trail is closest to the stream and runs over, under and along the park's 19 waterfalls by way of stone bridges and more than 800 stone steps. The trails connect to the Finger Lakes Trail, an 800-mile (1280 km) system of trails throughout New York state.[1]

Since our trip to Belhurst Castle was ending, we decided to drive down Seneca Lake to Watkins Glen State Park. We have heard nothing but great reviews of this State Park and also seen that it is rated 3rd best State Park in the US so we had to go. This Park lived up to all of our expectations! We traveled through the lower gourge passing 19 waterfalls. The first thing that came to mind as we were hiking is that this place reminds me of a baby Grand Canyon! This is a must destination especially if you live with 4-5 hours away.
