Hanoi City Morning Commute | 4K Motorbike Ride | LIFE IN VIETNAM 2018
This ride was filmed in Hanoi, Vietnam on a Friday morning around 9:15am. The main weekday morning rush hour (usually between 730am~830am) had died down by this point, so we were able to zoom through Hanoi relatively quickly. Normally during rush hour, a 20-minute ride like this can become 45 minutes or longer.
I was riding on the back of a GRAB motorbike. GRAB is a ride-share service, just like Uber. It's the main way I commute around Hanoi.
In this video, you'll see what normal traffic looks like, including lots of honking and lots of traffic violations. This is normal, daily life in Vietnam.

If you liked this, you'll also like our How to Motorbike Bali:
Motorbike traffic in Vietnam is insane, but there is a method to the madness. By far the most challenging areas to drive in are the busy cities such as Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. Surprisingly, once you get out of the busy city centers, driving becomes a piece of cake.
There is certainly something to be said about safety in number while driving a scooter in Vietnam. There was a comfort in the fact there are so few cars on the roads. This stands in contrast to a place like Bali, where cars and scooters jockey for position on narrow roads. The most important thing to remember while driving in ANY south east Asian country is that the bigger vehicle has the right of way. Can't argue with that!
Most of the roads between towns and cities were very well maintained. This left you free to focus your attention on the natural beauty of the country as well as keep a sharp lookout for cows on the road. If you're at all a fan of motorcycles, motorbikes, or scooters, you owe it to yourself to do a trip from South to North in Vietnam sometime in your life.

In this Vietnam Street Food tour video, Myself (Trevor James, The Food Ranger), am taking you on a food street journey to many delicious, mouthwatering street food places around Hanoi in Northern Vietnam. Over the past 3 years, I've filmed and eaten street food around China, including locations like Chengdu, Lanzhou, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing, Wuhan, Leshan, Shanghai, and Xinjiang's Silk Road. So far, the street food in each of these locations has been the best street food around the world! Vietnamese cuisine is so delicious, and even though I've only been here a short while, I'm sure that it would really need a lifetime to eat all of it. I've decided to stay living in China, and move around to other countries like Vietnam for another year or two or even more, shooting delicious street food in china for you and across asia as well!

MOTORCYCLING VIETNAM | Riding 2,000 KM from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi through the Old Ho Chi Minh Road
All the time people message me or comment asking what I route I took, how I prepared for the trip, what licenses I had etc.
Instead of replying to them one by one, sign up here and I will share tips & tricks on navigating Vietnam via motorcycle when I finish writing up my experience!
bit.ly/motorcycling_vietnam
My friend and I bought two bikes at the southern end of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh), strapped our belongings to the back, and motorcycled everyday to reach the northern end (Hanoi).
A year ago we took a 4 day motorcycle riding course. We did this because we thought some day we would do an adventure tour through the infamous Ho Chi Minh trail through Vietnam. It was a beautiful 2,000 KM stretch of open road through the mountains and jungles of Vietnam. I legitimately thought we were going to do this YEARS from now, because then we would actually be 'ready' and 'capable' of doing something like this. The timing just didn't feel right. I was comfortable in my post-grad 9-5 doldrums and put off a trip like this into the 'someday' bucket, using the future as a phony fantasy to justify the present. You and I both know these were just the everyday lies we tell ourselves. In truth, I was scared shitless. I knew that there would be a time when I would do this trip in my life, 100%, but this felt like it was way beyond my comfort zone. I've backpacked through Eastern Europe and slept on stranger's floors before, but I was hesitant to loosen the grip I had on my domestic certainties -- mostly because I would have to hop on a statistically dangerous deathmobile.
Thanks to my friend Russell, that someday happened the same year we got our M1's. I probably timed out of the final confirmation screen multiple times while booking the tickets. But the rest is history: we did it, made it out safe, and only had one (minor) accident. In hindsight everything took care of itself, and the most challenging part of the whole trip was honestly dealing with the rumination before we took the plunge, and that's including running out of gas, breaking down (nearly everyday), and getting ripped off. Unfortunately we did this trip during the rainy season.
What was amazing and literally saved us multiple times were the locals. We had to make it to Nha Trang but broke down in the middle of a mountain at 5 PM right before sunset, right when the fog was rolling in. (Visibility was only 2 meters ahead) Locals nearby took our bikes to the back of their trucks, strapped it on with our bungee cords, and siphoned the gas themselves with their mouths to prevent any leakage on their trucks. They took us to Dalat which was along the way.
One time, my chain flew off 50 M behind me and snapped completely. We were stuck on the Ho Chi Minh Road where a bike/truck passes by every 5-10 minutes. Our third attempt to hail someone down resulted in two local farmers who got down on their knees and spent at least an hour using their scythe that was for crops as a way to re-attach the chain. After failing to do so, the other farmer eventually rode off to the nearest village and secured the parts from a mechanic to actually re-attach the chain. They wouldn't even take our money, but eventually we repaid them for the parts and many gracious goodbyes were made :)

Saturday Afternoon Commute in Hanoi | 4K Motorbike Ride | LIFE IN VIETNAM 2018
This ride was filmed in Hanoi, Vietnam on a Saturday afternoon around 12pm. Some parts of Hanoi can experience heavy traffic on Saturdays, but the route my Grab driver took was mostly clear so we were able to zoom through the city relatively quickly.
Normally during the weekday rush hour, a 17-minute ride like this can become 45 minutes or longer.
I was riding on the back of a GRAB motorbike. GRAB is a ride-share service, just like Uber. It's the main way I commute around Hanoi.
In this video, you'll see what normal traffic looks like, including lots of honking and lots of traffic violations. This is a normal day in the life of those who live in Vietnam.

Riding from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi
This video is a compilation of the footage I was able to get during our ride from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi in northern Vietnam. It is really hard to explain the beauty of this country. It is something that you have to see in person.
The total trip was 25 days and we wasted no time getting a bike once we landed in Ho Chi Minh for the trip. Jess has never been on the back of a bike before and after a few rides with a loaned scooter she was feeling semi-comfortable around the hectic traffic. We switched the scooter out for a Honda XR150 and loaded up the bike. With 2 backpacks and 2 smaller bags, we fueled up and set off.
We were not ready for the ever changing landscapes. We stopped frequently to take in the views. The route that we took recommended by Tigit was covered in nice turns sloping down the mountainside. I’m a bit shocked that there wasn’t much of a motorbike/car racing scene here considering the roads the locals ride on everyday would breed some talented drivers/riders.
We spent a night or two in most of the cities but focused most of our time in Ho Chi Minh and Hue where my family lives. Thank you Vietnam for an amazing time, we will be back :)

The Vietnam Ride ???? Hanoi to Mai Chau Motorbike Trip 2018
Watch the cinematic version!
Edited by:
Check out Mitchell Millennial's channel for cinematic travel videos, info on teaching English abroad and the best film making gear.
The Vietnam Ride!
Motorbike trips around southeast Asia are my FAVORITE thing to do. If you are visiting Hanoi or Northern Vietnam, i say this is a MUST DO! Whether its to Mai Chou which is 4-5 hours from Hanoi, or to Sapa to the north, or if its all around N Vietnam or even down to Central or South all the way to Saigon!
Also when you visit Thailand or Cambodia or Lao... I don't care where, DON'T be afraid to go for a ride adventure! This ride was very similar to the Chiang Mai to Pai ride. Mai Chau is like Pai but even smaller. A great place to stop for a night!
Then for a day ride from Mai Chau you can ride up to Hang Kia, the small village we went to and get some cool views along the way. Like this thumbnail pic.
If you do stay in Mai Chau, book a room with our host Chau with Booking.com and search for Lu's Homestay.

VIETNAM ROAD RIDE TO HANOI Vietnam Motorbike Tours
Day 10 on the Top Gear Tour with Vietnam Motorbike Tours - the final day of our 10 day adventure is way up north near China as we ride into Hanoi. Ngiah Lo is our final taste of the highlands before we head east toward the coast.A bit of fuel and then it's time to see the real Vietnam. Electric bicycles are popular here, we rode past at least 100 of these on the way out of town with Vietnam Motorbike Tours. Not a bad idea given they have so much hydro electric power here. Why? Our eagle eyed support riders have been amazing. They look relaxed but for 10 days they've been keeping a close eye on us, marking every corner, making sure our sidestands are up, indicators get turned off, giving back massages, running errands, cooking lunch and doing a thousand and one things every day. So in my shitty Vietnamese, com eong nieu, guys. Thanks so much. It's been an epic 10 day trip. Mountain passes, terraced rice fields, hospitable locals, spectacular caves, countless corners, beautiful scenery and thousands upon thousands of corners. It's been a blast and I'm sure many of us will be returning to see the real Vietnam. And finally, the traffic of Hanoi with Vietnam Motorbike Tours. A spot of brekky in this local joint then it's time to gear up. Great to see other riders out and about on some really old bikes. No electric start on these babies, just a left hand kick start at a weird angle. After 10 days in the mountains, the frenetic pace and energy of Hanoi will come as a shock. But I was surprised to hear our crew say this was comparatively light traffic, possibly due to the new year holidays. I can see what the guys mean when they say we've had nine days of training for this. Spot the dirt rider trying to ride a road bike. So this is the Red River Valley, the cradle of Vietnamese civilization and where the first Vietnamese kings ruled thousands of years ago. And the Red River was used to conduct trade with nearby China. There's a highway all the way to Hanoi but as usual we take the road less travelled and only pop out onto the main roads for the corners through mountain passes. We even get to do some dirt riding on the rougher roads. So how has the Vietnam Motorbike Tours trip been for Toby Price? In the rider briefing they said we'll be passing lots of trucks and just to be careful, even though they are generally good drivers. And they said the traffic in Hanoi gets really crazy. 20 years ago I remember Hanoi as a kind of big country town, filled with bicycles and influences from the French colonial era. Now it's a highly polluted metropolis of around eight million people. You can still find very picturesque parts of the old city with Vietnam Motorbike Tours but once the tour is finished a lot of our guys are heading for nearby Halong Bay. Halong means descending dragon, and this world heritage listed area features thousands of limestone karst formations, inlets and tiny islands. Quite a few of the islands are hollow and feature huge caves. It really is a must-see if you get this far north. No more back roads, it's all freeway now so time to speed things up. Damn is there anything these scooters can't carry? Speaking of ninja training, a final word from our slightly racist sponsor. As far as I know, we haven't lost a single rider this trip, at least not that I know of. We now know the basics of the Vietnamese style of controlled chaos. The Vietnam Motorbike Tours crew say go with the flow, work cooperatively to keep the traffic moving, stay chilled and don't be a dickhead. Road rage is virtually unknown here and despite nine days of ninja traffic training, I still lapse into road rage occasionally.
