Old Photographs Colinton Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Colinton, Scottish Gaelic: Baile Cholgain, a suburb of Edinburgh. Colinton house was owned by Sir William Forbes, 6th Baronet of Monymusk and Pitsligo, born 5 April 1739, died 12 November 1806, who was a Scottish banker. He was known also as an improving landlord, philanthropist and writer. He was born in Edinburgh. His father Willam Forbes, heir to a Nova Scotia baronetcy, was an advocate. A friend of the family, Sir Francis Farquharson of Haughton, arranged with Messrs. Coutts, a prominent firm of bankers in Edinburgh, to admit Forbes as an apprentice, and he entered their service in 1754. It was run by the sons of John Coutts. The apprenticeship lasted four years, and then he was clerk in the counting house for two years more, at the end of which he was given a small share in the business as a partner. Forbes had become an authority on finance, and in 1783 he took part in preparing the revised Bankruptcy Act. William Pitt used to consult him, and adopted in 1790 some of his suggestions on the stamps on bills of exchange. In 1799 Pitt offered him an Irish peerage, which he declined. The 15th century Colinton Castle, in the grounds of what is now Merchiston Castle School, was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell during his invasion of Scotland. Following repair, the castle was subsequently partially demolished by the artist Alexander Nasmyth in order to create a picturesque ruin. Spylaw Park in Colinton was bought by the City of Edinburgh Council in 1911. Robert Louis Stevenson spent the summers of his childhood at the manse in Colinton when his grandfather was the village's Parish Minister; the philanthropist James Gillespie; and architects Sir Robert Rowand Anderson and John James Burnet, all lived in the village.
LEAVING SCOTLAND ????| St Andrews Cathedral & St Rules Tower | Fife Travel Vlog
In our final travel vlog from Scotland and the UK we explore the amazing St Andrews, a gem of Fife and one of the most... ⬇ More Below ⬇
Today we tackle the amazing St Andrews, exploring the cathedral ruins and scoping out the views across St Andrews from atop of St Rules Tower!
As our time in Scotland comes to an end we can't help but feel so impressed, blessed and in love with this country! Fife in particular has blown us away with it's beautiful seaside villages, huge list of things to do and so much going one - not something always associated with the UK.
St Andrews is so much more than just the home of golf - it's got a very special presence and some incredible tales about it's church, cathedral and St Rules Tower as well.
Scotland has definitely been kind to us with the weather, we've had 95% sun during our time in Fife! That's far from normal, but any chance to explore St Andrews in the sunshine is a win in our books. Speaking of our time in Scotland, if you want to see more of our trip here's the full playlist of our time in this epic country —

SCOTLAND SCURDIENESS LIGHTHOUSE & THE MAINS OF USAN. SCOTLAND
On this video you can see Scurdieness Lighthouse, in the distance and mist.
This video was taken in CHAPEL MILL. At THE MAINS OF USAN.
You will see the dilapitated Chapel Mill Buildings, at Usan near the sea shore
I believe this to be The Chapel Mill.
The stream running below the main building, the signs of an old milling water wheel, and its position seem to confirm all this.
A collection of single storey stone built mill buildings, complete with lade and remnants of a mill wheel, in a coastal location.
June 2009: External inspection finds the buildings are completely exposed to the elements and are ruinous.
23 October 2012: External inspection finds no significant change from the previous site visit.
The Scott Mausoleum, is an amazing wee building in its own right, and should be preserved by someone !
IF you can find the place, and if you go there, take walking boots. It is not far through the farmers gate, to the buildings, but the ground is rough and covered in cow pats.
Wellies are good if it has been raining !
Some of the buildings are less than stable, so be extra vigilant when going inside or climbing up on them. Children MUST BE supervised. Daft adults like me, can please themselves.
In my own opinion, if no restoration work is undertaken soon, these buildings will not be even ruins, in 10 years time.
For the last 4 years, I have visited here, & I have seen the buildings deteriorate rapidly.
Renovated, with a decent road, this place, if known about could have coach loads arriving ever day of the week !

Old Photographs Luss By Loch Lomond Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Luss, a village in Argyll & Bute, on the South West bank of Loch Lomond. Historically in the County of Dunbarton, its original name is Clachan dhu, or dark village. Ben Lomond, the most southerly Munro mountain, dominates the view north over the loch, and the Luss Hills rise to the west of the village. Saint Kessog brought Christianity to Luss at some uncertain date in the Dark Ages. The village is within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. In 1625 Sir John Colquhoun of Luss was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia. However in 1632 he was accused of absconding with his wife's sister, Lady Catherine Graham, daughter of the Earl of Montrose. He was accused of using sorcery and witchcraft and perhaps wisely he did not return to answer these charges. He became a fugitive and his estates were forfeited. Sir John's eldest son recovered the estates in 1646. In 1703 Sir Humphrey Colquhoun, fifth Baronet represented Dunbartonshire in the last Scottish Parliament. He strongly opposed the Treaty of Union. He died without male issue and the title passed to his daughter's husband, James Grant of Pluscardine. However when Pluscardine's elder brother died he re-assumed the name of Grant. He was the ancestor of the Earls of Seafield and Barons of Strathspey, on whom the baronetcy devolved. The estate was succeeded to by Sir James Grant Colquhoun who was the fourth son of James Grant and Ann Colquhoun. He built the mansion of Rossdhu which remains the seat of the chiefs of Clan Colquhoun. The present Church of Scotland place of worship in Lussa was built in 1875 by Sir James Colquhoun, in memory of his father who had drowned in the loch in December 1873

Robert Fergusson Gravestone Canongate Kirkyard Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland video of the Robert Fergusson Gravestone in Canongate Kirkyard, Royal Mile, on ancestry visit to Edinburgh. The gravestone was raised by Robert Burns who, on visiting Edinburgh twelve years after Fergusson's death, was shocked to find no memorial stone over the poet's grave. Burns commissioned the stone from Robert Burn, the architect who later designed the Nelson Monument on the Calton Hill. It was erected in 1792 with lines on it written by Burns: No sculptured marble here, nor pompous lay, No storied urn, nor animated Bust; This simple stone directs Pale Scotia's way; To pour her Sorrows o'er the Poet's Dust.
The surname Fergusson was first found in Galloway, Gaelic: Gall-ghaidhealaibh, an area of southwestern Scotland, now part of the Council Area of Dumfries and Galloway, that formerly consisted of the counties of Wigtown, West Galloway, and Kirkcudbright, East Galloway, where they were descended from the Prince of Galloway who married the daughter of King Henry I of England. These ancient Lords of Galloway were independent rulers until they were annexed by Scotland in 1234. Alan, Prince of Galloway, was the last of the line. The Craigdarroch branch was the oldest but they also had branches at Cowal, Kintyre, Kilkerran, Atholl, Kinmundy, Pitfour.
The Ayrshire Fergusons, who descended from Fergus, the independent 12th century Lord of Galloway, were established in the Southwest of Scotland even before they received their charter from Bruce, the King of Scotland, in the 13th century. Furthermore, numerous families of the name Ferguson were established throughout Scotland at an early date. In Argyll, where the Ferguson Clan is particularly numerous, the Fergusons held lands in Strachur until the beginning of the 19th century. The Fergussons of Perthshire were recognized as the principal Highland branch of the Clan and the chieftainship belonged to the Dunfallandy family, the head of which was designated MacFhearghuis.
