We boarded the old steam train expecting a ride and some great scenery. We walked away with knowledge, an adventure and big smiles on our faces thanks to the team at the West Coast Wilderness Railway. This is a must do when in Tasmania!

We’re on our trip of Tasmania by cabin and car and after our time wandering Cradle Mountain we headed to the west coast for a night in Strahan, followed by an adventure on the West Coast Wilderness Railway. There are a number of different half day and full day rides available, and we selected a morning half day tour departing Queenstown for Double Barril. It’s known as the Rack & Gorge Experience.
Something that we weren’t aware of was just how thirsty a steam train is. As a result after departing Queenstown there were a number of stops on our way to Double Barril. Each of these provided an opportunity to stretch the legs, take some photos and purchase a hot coffee on two of the stops. We took the Heritage Class tickets, which didn’t provide access to a rear balcony or food and drinks during the journey. But we packed our lunch and really had plenty of room and viewing opportunity.
During the trip you learn all about the history of Queenstown, and the local gold rush and copper mining history of the town. This is an amazing story that is truly brought to life, with two characters selected from the carriages to play the part of a rich Mr Kelly and an entrepreneur Mr Grotty. We won’t ruin the story for you (I guess you could Google it!) but the story is told throughout the journey.
The views were spectacular, the carriages spacious and the overall experience well worth doing on your own, with friends or like us with your family. We passed the longer all day tour on the way, which provides a different experience and story to our own.

Rack and Gorge Tour - West Coast Wilderness Railway
The Rack and Gorge is the West Coast Wilderness Railway's popular half-day tour departing Queenstown. This video explains what passengers will see and do as they travel from Queenstown on Tasmania's rugged West Coast into the station at Dubbil Barril in the rainforest on the King River Gorge, and then return to Queenstown.

This includes a track section with Rack and Pinion to climb and descend the steep hill.
This train used to transport copper from Queenstown to the Tasmania West Coast port of Strahan.
These steam trains have however been modified to run their boilers on oil instead of coal.

West Coast Wilderness ABT rack system railway trip from Queenstown to Strahan and back Tasmania Australia. This was the 2010 Australia Day Picnic train for locals etc. There were 2 trains leaving Queenstown early in the morning to Strahan and returning late afternoon as a double headed single train. Typical weather on the west coast was 3 seasons in one!!
