HANGZHOU - Tea House & West Lake
“A good snapshot keeps a moment from running away.” ― E. Welty
With our China tour slowly coming to an end, we prepared ourselves to relish the experiences that today’s adventures in Hangzhou offered. Our morning started with our bus weaving through the picturesque terraced tea-plantations of the Meijiawu Tea Culture Village. Prior to us arriving at the charming Tea House, our knowledgeable tour guide (a green tea connoisseur himself) described the process the farmers use to produce the fragrant West Lake Dragon Well Tea. At the Tea House a qualified tea expert explained and demonstrated the processes for picking, drying and grading the leaves. She also amazed everyone with a ‘magical’ chemical demonstration that emphasized the health benefits of green leaf tea. And, of course we all got the opportunity to sample and purchase some high-grade tea leaves and other goodies. Michael’s sweet tooth didn’t allow him to leave the Tea House without buying a couple of packets of delicious green tea lollies!
Back on the bus for a short drive to the most popular place in Hangzhou - West Lake. This beautiful fresh water lake located in the middle of the city is the subject of many poems and paintings. Utterly mesmerising with the pagoda-topped hills rising over willow-lined waters and stunning temples, pavilions, gardens and bridges surrounding it. There were many kinds of boats, including large painted boats and small rowing boats that drifted along the lake. An aura of romance was added to our boat trip as Joe told us the legendary story originating in West Lake …. isn’t love grand!
After our lake cruise we had some time to ourselves for arranging lunch and strolling around the nearby shops. We then wandered back to the bus and admired the beautiful tree-lined streets and stunning parks with manicured garden beds. Then it was all aboard for our scenic 2hr bus ride to Shanghai.
The scenery was remarkable! We goggled at the vast rice fields and sprawling farmlands interwoven with impressive farm houses. The dense high-rise apartment buildings extended towards the horizon (as far as the eye could see) and all of this was intertwined with an abundance of cranes signalling further development and construction.
As we neared Shanghai, we took a moment to reflect on our day’s adventures (so far) and agreed that the picturesque scenery was nothing short of SPECTACULAR!
Time to hit the road!

Poorly publicized museum in the picturesque city of Hangzhou, designed by David Chipperfield. The building and the exhibits deserve much more visitors. Take the exit from West Lake and spend half a day here would definitely be rewarded. Review of architecture at here:

Episode 15: Hangzhou, China: Wonders of Walking West Lake Zhejiang 第15集:中国杭州:浙江西湖奇观 步行
We were BLOWN AWAY by Hangzhou. I think we had low expectations and in every area, it surpassed what we thought it would be. The main attraction in Hangzhou is West Lake. The lake is 13.5 miles in circumference and easily walkable, bu other options exist like electric carts and bicycles. All along the way, you run into famous pagodas, bridges, temples, museums, and places to sit along the lake. It's relaxing and very chill. The people are great. The food is outstanding and prices, believe it or not, were quite inexpensive and reasonable.
After hosting the G20, we thought that the lake and surrounding area would be highly commercialized, but it has maintained a very quiet, quaint and traditional environment. It took us about 10 hours to walk around the entire lake and back to our hotel. It was a long day, but well worth it.
The landscaping and natural beauty of the lake and mountains are breathtaking. Hangzhou is well worth a visit of at least a few days. Try to go during lotus season - it must be even more beautiful with all of the flowers in bloom. We did not have the chance to take a ferry to the islands; it rained one entire day and we ran out of time. We did hear the islands are lovely and being on the lake is a treat.

ENDURING MEMORIES OF HANGZHOU SHOW @ WEST LAKE - HANGZHOU, CHINA
Overview
Staged entirely upon the lake itself (a stage has been built 3 centimeters below the surface), Impression West Lake is a spectacle of light, music, dance and theatrics. The stories are based on Hangzhou legends. Using the lake and its surroundings as props, lights and hundreds of actors create a sensational performance.
It is a unique outdoor performance on natural settings. Staged on the West Lake, the performance appears vivid and incredibly beautiful. Mixed with the myths and legends of the West Lake, the show leads you to a sweet thousand-year dream. The special concealable auditorium ensures each seat a wonderful place to enjoy the dazzling show. The state-of-the-art sound system is surely to offer a surprising musical enjoyment. Be sure to catch it, the show is a must-see when you come to Hangzhou. Come and enjoy the most amazing and beautiful spectacle you will see in your life.
The director of this show is Mr Zhang Yimou, who was in charge of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In 2016, the dream-like and fantastic Impression West Lake Show, as the golden name card of the city of Hangzhou, gave the world a feast for eyes during G20 summit.
From May 2017, the new version of Impression West Lake show - Enduring Memories of Hangzhou, will open to public again and welcome audiences from both home and abroad.
The new show Enduring Memories of Hangzhou, is upgraded by the team led by famous director Zhang Yimou based on the former Impression West Lake Show. The name of the show is quoted from a very famous poem written by Bai Juyi ( 772 - 846 ), the great poet, litterateur and politician in Chinese Tang Dynasty ( 618 - 907 ). He used to be the mayor of Hangzhou, and was respected and loved by the local people since he did a lot work to make them live better.
The show is created in an East-Meet-West way. Dancers perform in the beautifully lit background in the shallow water, and the performance is all on a floating platform, so that it seems like dancers are dancing on the surface of the lake. In such a setting, together with fantastic music background and awesome performance, the show is absolutely a must-see in Hangzhou.
