Exploring the Ruins of Dun Glen w/ West Virginia Explorer
Dave Sibray is the publisher of West Virginia Explorer, the chief guide to travel and history in West Virginia since 1999. This week The Folkway and West Virginia Explorer teamed up to explore the ruins of the ghost town of Dun Glen, a small mining settlement atop a mountain deep in the New River Gorge just outside of Thurmond.
Named after the famous Dun Glen Hotel, this mining community was home to roughly 20 families and included a small company store. Little is left of this small community aside from a few erected chimneys, scattered metal wash bins, piles of cut stone, and a lone stone structure rooted in the ground. Like many old mining towns in the Mountain State, Dun Glen is a mere shadow of what it used to be, a lost city with history long forgotten.

Sen. Manchin visits the World Scout Jamboree
U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) attended the 24th World Scout Jamboree hosted by the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia. For the first time since 1967, the World Scout Jamboree is being held in the United States. This year’s World Scout Jamboree theme, “Unlock a New World,” was designed for hardworking and dedicated Scouts to become exposed to new experiences, new cultures and new friends. The 24th World Scout Jamboree is an educational event that brings together tens of thousands of young men and women from over 120 countries around the world. With over two million youth volunteers and one million adult volunteers, Scouts make a huge difference in all communities across the globe. In 2018, there were more than 7.5 million hours of volunteer work completed among Eagle Scouts alone.

Planning For The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve
The Boy Scouts of America recently announced the purchase of more 10,000 acres in the Mount Hope/Glen Jean area of Fayette County, West Virginia. The property was purchased to build a high adventure base in the Eastern United States. The camp will be called The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. This is great news for the state of West Virginia, especially Southern West Virginia. The Scouts have also announced they are moving the National Scouting Jamboree to this site in the year 2013.

Things To Do in West Virginia: Thurmond GHOST TOWN
We continued our West Virginia tour with a visit to the ghost town of Thurmond where we spent the afternoon wandering abandoned streets and pressing our noses against the windows of abandoned buildings (except for the one that we “visited” from the inside ????????????). Thurmond is officially the least populated town in West Virginia. According to the 2010 census, Thurmond had dropped to a population of five. 5! This means you could literally count the entire town’s citizenry on one hand. (During our visit, we only found 2 homes inhabited, so we are guessing this number may still be accurate today.)
