Noted for its pristine condition, this tranquil park borders Pellicer Creek as it winds along Florida's east coast highways down to the Matanzas River. Pellicer Creek is a popular site for birding with more than one hundred bird species seen during spring and fall migrations. Songbirds, including the colorful wood warblers, along with eagles and falcons, return to nest at the park each year. Wading birds, such as egrets, wood storks, white ibis, and herons, feed in the tidal marshes and creeks.
This peaceful park is also home to deer, turkeys, hawks, bobcats, and river otters. Fishing, picnicking, and nature walks are popular activities. Pellicer Creek is a designated state canoe trail and visitors can rent canoes at the park. A full-facility campground is available for overnight stays. Located 15 miles south of St. Augustine near the intersection of I-95 and U.S. 1.

Baby Alligator
We were having breakfast on the deck at the River Ratz Cafe in Nobleton, Florida. A few minutes before this little alligator swam by on the other side of the river, there were two river otters that swam by and went upstream. A short while after the gator was gone, a wading bird came in and had a meal on the shore.

HP Williams Roadside Park at Big Cypress Preserve
Our favorite spot to stop for a picnic while driving down US 41. There is so much in this little corner and it takes absolutely no effort or sidetrip required as it sits right by the side of the road, just pull in! This time we got to see: egret, little blue heron, turtles, fish feeding, alligator, wood stork, anhinga, cormorants, a little green heron and of course ibis.
You Got to See Florida (1950s)
Excerpt of original. This film starts with Florida agriculture, including papaya and sugarcane. Viewers see farming on reclaimed Everglades muck land and imported grass from India is mentioned. The film shows cattle herds on a man-made Pampas that a few years ago were swamp. Tern rookeries on Bird Island, Marine Studios, purple gallinules, gators, and lots of wild flowers with butterflies are shown. Next are bellowing alligators, white ibis, blue heron, coots, rails, egret, and green heron. Viewers see Seminoles spear fishing, in a village grinding corn, and cooking with a baby in a hammock. Phosphate mining, shelling on Sanibel Island, hermit crab, citrus, tarpon fishing in the mangroves, bass fishing, parrots, the University of Miami, and Bok Tower are shown. This is a beautiful Kodachrome print. Sponsored by Gulf Oil.

Pelicans, Egrets and Herons
The three birds can be identified in the video in the following order: Pink-backed Pelican, Snowy Egrets and Black-crowned Night Heron.
Pink-backed Pelican:
It is easy to identify pelicans because they are one of the only birds with a pouch under their bill. The unique pouch is also helpful in warm weather. While roosting in the hot sun, pelicans will open their bills and flap the pouch to cool off!
It is a resident breeder in Africa, southern Arabia and apparently extinct in Madagascar in swamps and shallow lakes. It is much smaller and duller than the Great White Pelican. The plumage is grey and white, with a pink back. The top of the bill is yellow and the pouch is usually greyish. Breeding adults have long feather plumes on the head. Food is usually fish and amphibians and is usually obtained by fishing in groups.
Snowy Egret:
The snowy egrets are predominantly found in the United States, Canada, West Indies, South America, and Argentina.
Snowy egrets are found near water, salt or fresh, and feed in wetlands, streams, ponds, tidal flats, and other areas. They snare prey by walking slowly or standing still for long periods, waiting for an animal to come within range of their long necks and blade-like bills. The deathblow is delivered with a quick thrust of the sharp bill, and the prey is swallowed whole. Fish are a dietary staple, but great egrets use similar techniques to eat amphibians, reptiles, mice, and other small animals.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, snowy egrets had been decimated by market hunters for their beautiful breeding plumes. The plumes were considered fashionable adornment for women's hats. Because the plumes of snowy egrets were in greater demand than those of the great egret, snowy egrets were killed in larger numbers by plume hunters. Today the outlook is much brighter. The birds have enjoyed legal protection over the last century, and their numbers have increased substantially.
Black-crowned Night Heron:
The Black-crowned Night Heron is an attractive bird to watch. When in flight, the heron tucks its neck in close to the body and rarely extends it. They have a short thick sharp pointed black bill. The body of an adult Heron is 58 72 cm (20 28 inches) long. Young black-crowned night herons are brown and streaked with white. The eye of the juvenile black-crowned night heron is yellowish or amber and their legs are a dull gray. With a range that spans five continents, including much of North America, the Black-crowned Night-Heron is the most widespread heron in the world. The Black-crowned Night-Heron may nest in the same tree with ibises or other herons. Adult Black-crowned Night-Herons apparently do not distinguish between their own young and those from other nests, and will brood chicks not their own! They thrive on aquatic invertebrates, fish, amphibians, lizards, snakes, rodents, eggs, and other foods.

SUMMARY
=======
Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge is a United States National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), and part of the Everglades Headwaters NWR complex, located just off the western coast of Orchid Island in the Indian River Lagoon east of Sebastian, Florida. The refuge consists of a 3-acre (12,000 m2) island that includes an additional 2.5 acres (10,000 m2) of surrounding water and is located off the east coast of Florida of the Indian River Lagoon. Established by an executive order of President Theodore Roosevelt on March 14, 1903, Pelican Island was the first National wildlife refuge in the United States. It was created to protect egrets and other birds from extinction through plume hunting.
